Right now I find development support lacking but it has very impressive hardware.
I did finally get mine rooted with a modified OS.
Note this does not have GPS. That can be a deal breaker for some. Continuing their push to have users store everything in the cloud, there is no micro SD port.
This also uses USB-C connectivity and for charging. You can buy devices that add USB3 ports, SD reader, Ethernet port, and an a HDMI port.
So what happened?
Let me explain first with the good then the bad. And before anyone thinks I am some Apple loyalist, I want to set the record straight that I do not believe in the "us versus them" mentality where it has to be all Apple or all Google. I think having choices in life is necessary and find both products relevant in their own right.
THE GOOD
The Pixel C has a beautiful design. It has a fantastic screen that looks more vibrant than my iPad. The apps are snappy in response, which shows how powerful the hardware is. Camera is nice. And there is no bloatware like my older Samsung tablet and phones suffered from. This is a pure Android experience.
THE BAD
The main thing I do with my iPad is listen to news or music through my headphones or one of the two Bluetooth speakers in different rooms. I can pair my iPad to either Bluetooth speaker system in the kitchen or bedroom. I experience no lag, stutter, or drops when paired using Bluetooth. I can walk around with the iPad (or even my iPhone) while paired and have no issues until I go past any point having two walls between me and either Bluetooth system. Even my old Samsung tablet and phones did it with a longer range than my iPad and iPhone.
I figured the Pixel C would easily work with either Bluetooth speaker system. Wrong. Even when placed right next to the speakers, the Pixel C continuously causes a lag, stutter, or drop to happen. Forget about being a couple feet from the Bluetooth systems. The Bluetooth pairing is not good. Something is not right. The fact that the older Samsung tablet and phone (I am talking Android version 4.3) worked best and the iPad/iPhone worked almost as well suggests that the Pixel should have no problem. It does. And no amount of system updates seem to help.
Speaking of updates, the Pixel C reboots at will in the middle of using it. It just gets unresponsive and eventually restarts. This does not happen too often but often enough to make using it annoying. The battery life is not the best either. I get about three days (sometimes about four) after a full charge and not even using the Pixel C. The battery life is no where close to the iPad, which can keep a charge when not used for over a full seven days. I have tested several times the Pixel C by just turning it on after a full charge and leaving it with no background apps running. Every time the thing would die around day three or four. My iPad can have easily over thirty random apps (I have counted them when noticing the battery difference) in the background and still muster over a solid week if I launched the apps and then left it alone with all of them running in the background.
For these reasons, I gave the Pixel C two stars instead of the five stars I thought it would easily get once I first opened the box upon arrival. The sad part is I am getting sick of Apple making changes that makes me wonder why the company is continuing to make consumers spend money to use its hardware offerings. I read about the iPhone 7 headphone debacle. Why another cable is necessary to listen to countless headphones is beyond me. Something tells me the new design is not going to make my headphones sound any better. I was thinking of the new Google phone (the XL model); however, I keep thinking about my experiences with this Pixel C tablet, and I am just not feeling the new Google phone. If I did not have my iPad, I know I would not use the Pixel C no where as much.
Maybe things might get better with the next tablet Google brings out, but the things I mentioned are from real use over six months. I have no intention to bash, but I think at a certain price point the hardware Google produces should meet a certain level of quality from a user experience perspective. I do not think Pixel C is there yet.
- it would have the freaking USB data cable included. for such a price, you would expect to have a cable. Common Google, even the cheapest devises have a data cable included. WTF? And it is positioned like a Gamer's/Developer's tablet, why not include a data cable? Especially when this is the only port you can connect to it.
- you can't stream (CAST) to devices other the Google. again, WTF? I have a modern Samsung smart TV and I can't stream from the Pixel C. I can from any other tablet with such function. I can from my One Plus One phone. But NO, you CAN NOT DO IT from Pixel C.
Even though hardware wise it is a very cool tablet, I would've NOT buy it if I new all this. I feel like Google slowly is turning into same crap as Apple.
NOTE: To be clear, my issues are with Google as manufacturer, not the seller.
