The Nvidia Shield as a device finally accomplishes what I've been hoping to see from Android based devices. It is the ideal balance between a typical mobile device using Android that incorporates a controller, which will satisfy the most hardcore of gamers (myself included).
Technology:
The Nvidia Shield is literally a powerhouse of a portable console and is easily the most powerful Android device on the market. The Tegra 4 is a very powerful and energy efficient SoC that consists of a quad-core CPU as well as an additional 5th core (ARM A15) that handles background operations to save power. The Tegra 4 can handle essentially anything and everything you can throw at it on the Android platform. Without a doubt, you are getting cutting edge technology for a very reasonable and realistic price.
Hardware:
The Shield comes with a 5" display that has excellent color, detail, brightness, and resolution. At 1280 x 720, it packs quite a lot of pixels into that 5" display resulting in a 294 ppi. The screen is accompanied by a particularly impressive stereo speaker setup that perhaps is one of the best sounding that I have heard on a mobile device. To round out the device is a fairly standard list of features including the following: bluetooth 3.0, 802.11n 2x2 MIMO Wi-Fi, mini-HDMI, micro USB, 3.5 mm audio jack, and a microSD slot for expandable memory up to 64GB.
However, not so standard for mobile devices is the console equivalent controller integrated into the Shield. The controller is an interesting mix between an Xbox 360 and a Playstation controller. It features dual analog sticks, directional pad, 4 face buttons, two triggers, and two shoulder buttons. In addition, the analog sticks have the same click-in functionality found on console controllers. Finally, the controller also has a Start, Back, Android Home, and Volume control button as well as a Tegra button in the center, which takes you immediately to the Tegra Zone.
Comfort:
While on the topic of the controller, I will discuss the comfort of this device. As I mentioned, the controller is an interesting mix between an Xbox 360 and Dualshock controller. However, I'd say it is closer to the Xbox 360 in terms of how it’s held in your hands. It feels particularly well-built and quite a hefty device weighing in at over 1 pound. The controller does feel very comfortable in my hands and I think for most people they would feel the same way. The button placement is logical and easy to reach. The d-pad is actually surprisingly nice and the analog sticks are responsive and tight.
Battery Life:
Based on my experience, the average battery life for the Shield is around 7 hours. However, depending on what you are doing and your settings (brightness, audio volume, etc.) you can achieve nearly 10 hours of run-time. Obviously, the Tegra 4 has a lot to do with this impressive battery performance. In comparison, neither the 3DS (XL, 2DS) and the PSVita can achieve this type of battery performance. Therefore, you can keep gaming for nearly double the amount of time compared to these devices.
Software:
Scott Lowe from IGN believes that the Nvidia shield has an "a scarcity of compelling games." However, I beg to differ with Mr. Lowe's latter point as I believe the Shield has just about everything any gamer could ever want or need. Let me describe to you why the Shield is the quintessential gamer device.
The Nvidia Shield has several types of ways that gamers can well... game. It can be broken down into the following: Gamestream, GRID, emulation, Tegra Zone, and Google Play store.
Gamestream:
Gamestream is essentially Nvidia's version of the remote play functionality that you see on PS3, PS4, and Wii U. However, Gamestream in many ways can offer so much more than any of the mentioned devices because it gives you the power to stream from your local computer to the Shield. The Gamestream technology is no longer in beta and there are a significant amount of games that work quite well with this amazing technology. Personally, being able to stream Steam's big picture mode to this device is something quite powerful. To that end, being able to use Steam to launch other games/emulators really pushes it beyond anything that remote/off-tv play of the other devices can dream of. For example, I can use the Shield to play a PS2 or Gamecube game on an emulator running on my local pc. For me, this is truly something incredible.
GRID:
The Nvidia GRID is a recent addition to the Shield and was introduced in one of the system updates. GRID is a cloud-based gaming service. In other words, it is basically the equivalent of the OnLive service or what Gaikai for the PS4 hopes to be. Right now, GRID is in beta and works surprisingly well.
As of today, the service offers 8 PC games for free available to stream from a server in California right to your Shield using the Internet. The games being previewed are as follows: Alan Wake's American Nightmare, Darksiders 1 & 2, Street Fighter X Tekken, Super Street Fighter IV: Arcade Edition, The Witcher 2, Red Faction: Armageddon, and Trine 2.
Now, Nvidia states that the beta is limited to users in the state of California meeting the necessary bandwidth requirements. Regardless, I still gave the service a try and surprisingly it works nearly perfect. To put this in perspective, I am on the other side of the country with a respectable broadband connection and a high-end router streaming full PC games from a single Nvidia server in San Jose, California. Now that's magical! ;)
Not convinced? Here is what a professional reviewer from TheVerge had to say about the service: "We've used both OnLive and Gaikai, and as of today Grid easily trumps both. Despite running at the same 720p resolution, the images are clearer, without nearly as much artifacting, and the controls are more responsive. Games look better and are more playable than any cloud gaming system we've tried before."
Emulation:
If Gamestreaming and GRID aren't enough to satisfy a gamer, there is also the option of emulation. Thankfully, the open Android platform is the perfect place for all sorts of emulation. However, the Shield may just be the best handheld emulation device on the market today. The Shield can handle emulation from the early days of Atari to more modern consoles such as Dreamcast and PSP. Yes, the Shield can play Dreamcast and PSP games REALLY well. There is also a Gamecube emulator in the works for Android, so it will be interesting to see how that develops.
With all that said, imagine the vast library of games available to you from the days of Atari up until Dreamcast/PSP/DS. Add the built-in controller into the mix and suddenly this is a gamer's dream come true. The best part is that setup is quite simple and a lot of the emulators support the Shield controller right out of the "box".
Tegra Zone:
Simply, this is a hub for Tegra enhanced games as well as the place to launch Gamestreaming. The hub compiles all of the Tegra enhanced games from the Google Play store into a very nice user friendly interface. The hub also allows you to launch the Tegra games that you have purchased. Thankfully, Nvidia didn't try to force their own app store onto us and instead all of the purchases are done through the Google Play store.
Google Play Store:
While on the subject of the Google Play Store, there are vast amounts of apps and games available on there. Thanks to the excellent touchscreen on the Shield you can essentially use most of them. Obviously, some will work better than others. However, Nvidia recently introduced the Gamepad mapper, which is a solution to the Google play games that do not support the controller. I have found this to be incredibly useful and have gotten all sorts of games to play very well using the feature. For the lazy ones (myself included), the Gamepad mapper allows you to download community profiles. All in all, the community profiles I have downloaded work well. I have used this to play games like Angry Birds Go!, Rayman Fiesta Run, and other popular games that do not support the controller or aren't Shield enhanced. I cannot speak to how easy it is to create your own bindings as I'm not patient enough to figure it out.
I wanted to briefly mention that there are plenty of games that support the controller without any need of the mapper software. These games also weren't in the Tegra hub such as Badland.
As you can see, I believe that IGN's Scott Lowe either did not spend enough time with this device or he is simply impossible to impress. There is something for everyone on this device whether you are the most casual of users or a very gamer centric individual.
But wait! There’s more to discuss here. The Nvidia Shield does offer a “console” mode now which means that you can buy a cheap mini-HDMI to HDMI cable and plug your Shield right into the TV. Then, you can pair a bunch of PS3 controllers to it, sit back on your couch, and do everything I just mentioned earlier in this review on your TV. There is also a way to do this wirelessly using Miracast; however, I cannot speak to how well this works as I do not have a Miracast receiver hooked up to my TV.
Now, my role as a reviewer is to be void of bias. Therefore, I decided to save the negatives for last to round out my review of this device. Realistically, there is no such thing as a perfect device and the Shield isn't perfect but darn it comes close.
Pricing:
The current price of the Shield is $249.99, and there have been some promotional deals that have made the device cheaper than that. To be honest, the price for me isn't excessive as you are getting quite a lot of technology and capability for the price. However, the capability I mentioned does require some potential extra expenditure. For example, the Gamestream functionality of the Shield is limited to PC users that have the right hardware to utilize this technology. Gamestream requires a minimum of an Nvidia Geforce 650 GTX, which at the time this writing can easily go for $120 or so. Then, you also need to factor in that you potentially may need to upgrade your router to handle not only the Gamestream but also the GRID functionality of the Shield.
As you can see, the costs can start to add up. Of course, if you already have most of this tech or plan to upgrade anyway then I'd say it isn't a big deal. The reality is that for most people this will be an additional cost.
Other than that, additional accessories are minor costs such as a mini-HDMI to HDMI cable or even a microSD card for more storage.
Size:
The size of the Shield may also be prohibitive because it is not portable in the sense that you can just place it in your pocket or jacket.
Weight:
The Shield weights more than 1 pound which is much heavier than most portable devices. Therefore, there may be fatigue for some people.
Screen:
While 5” is certainly a nice screen size, I think Nvidia could’ve potentially squeezed out a slightly larger display. The bezel around the screen is wide enough that it would’ve been nice to see Nvidia slim that down to get a slightly larger display. This is really just a minor complaint for the sake of complaining.
Other than that, I haven’t found anything else I could complain about. I am sure others have experienced different issues than I have mentioned here.
In the end, the Nvidia Shield was an impulse purchase that turned out to be one of the biggest gaming surprises for me.
The Shield only comes with an additional wall charger and also a micro USB cable in order to be able to charge. I should mention that it also comes with the necessary documentations for people who would need help booting up and also using the device for the first couple of times as well.
In terms of shape and comfort, the shield is designed similarly to the Xbox 360's controller but slightly chunkier. It feels quite nice in the hand and most of the buttons; which includes the analog sticks and the triggers, work absolutely fine except for the D-Pad. While it is slightly more precise than the 360's D-Pad, it just feels floaty and just inaccurate and it is easy to hit diagonal directions by accident and over time it does become uncomfortable. I also would like to point out that the analogue sticks are placed similarly to a PS3 Controller's analogue sticks but they are recessed into the controller which may cause problems for some people but I found em to be responsive overall and very comfortable.
My biggest gripe about this handheld unfortunately is the fact that it's using the Android operating system! While that means that Android games can get easily ported and slightly enhanced on the shield thanks to the Tegra 4, that also means the the Shield is currently buried under a see of other Android devices and developers just do not care for it. This results to a slight lack of games released on the device that is truly worth playing and not cruddy ''Free-to-play/Pay-To-Win'' games. In fact, most of the Android games released for it are getting ported over to the PC platform with higher res graphics, or a PC/console version already exists and runs better on those than the Shield! Lastly, alot games on the Google Play store just are not compatible AT ALL to the point of not even booting up!
After having it for two weeks, I felt no point in owning the device, the PC streaming through your computer's Nvdia GPU is a nice touch, but if I am going to play PC games, I am going to play on my bloody PC! I also wish to mention Nvidia Grid, which streams PC games from the internet in a similar fashion to Onlive. At the time of me writing this, it was still in BETA. However I had a pleasant experience with the service and even with a 30 MBpS download and 10 MBpS Upload internet speed (Which is junk), I was able to stream audio and video flawlessly and I only suffered from lag on most games when someone else would hop on my network and stream videos at the same time. In fact; I then purchased one of the stream-able games on my PC after trying it on Grid. Still, the service is not going to be for everyone and PC gamers will stick to their PC's to play those games!
In the end, I think that the Nvidia Shield is a wonderfully well built device. It feels solid and is overall well optimized for an Android device, but with the lack of support. compatibility issues with a lot of APPS, and the fact hat PC streaming might be pointless to people who play games on their PC already just makes this device hard to recommend. I returned mine since I ad no intentions of using it, unlike my PSVITA and my 3DS's which makes me sad because IT IS WELL MADE!
If you are curious and think that this is still a cool looking gadget, then I would recommend that you give it a shot. However, if you are looking to do ''Android Gaming'', I say pass. There is no point to Android gaming and unfortunately, I think this device would probably have had more use from me if it was it's own thing instead of an Android based system.
Top reviews from other countries
The shipping said it was going to be at least month before I received it and I was very prepared to wait but only 3 days after ordering It I recieved it in the mail and was ecstatic!
The product came brand new in its original box and everything had its original plastic covering on it, being 4 years old there were quite a few updates to do so that took a while and trying to charge the device with anything but the provided charger will take up to 4 hours even with a 2.1 amp charger.
Once everything was updated the device is still plenty fast and has a pretty good 720P screen, the performance is great and the battery life has lasted me about 18 hours with mixed video streaming and gaming streaming from my computer, nvidia and the built in games.
Overall I would highly recommend this device if you can get your hands on one for less then $250, it's definitely worth it and is great for any age with the provided games on GeForce now, such as Lego batman, Lego movie the game and Lego Harry Potter, it is all quite appealing to older people with its selection of batman games and other dark and gloomy action games.
Merci AMAZON !
