Product Description
24mm D-Series Wideangle lens for Nikon cameras
From the Manufacturer
Lens-making is an art--Nikon artisans craft Nikkor optics from the finest materials, taking pride in adding their intellect and technique to bring the world's finest lenses to life. They push the leading edge of lens-making in their effort to provide the "glass" that makes the world's greatest pictures.
AF Nikkor lenses work with Nikon SLRs for optimal performance, even the very latest. The Nikon 24mm f2.8D AF Wide-Angle Nikkor is a compact ultra-wide-angle lens constructed with superb optical design for architecture, wedding, and landscape photography. It features 84-degree (61-degree with Nikon DX format) picture coverage with edge-to-edge sharpness. The Close Range Correction (CRC) system provides high performance at both near and far focusing distances, for distortion-free pictures as close as one foot.
Nikon Super Integrated Coating ensures exceptional performance
To enhance the performance of its optical lens elements, Nikon employs an exclusive multilayer lens coating that helps reduce ghost and flare to a negligible level. Nikon Super Integrated Coating achieves a number of objectives, including minimized reflection in the wider wavelength range and superior color balance and reproduction. Nikon Super Integrated Coating is especially effective for lenses with a large number of elements, like our Zoom-Nikkors. Also, Nikon's multilayer coating process is tailored to the design of each particular lens. The number of coatings applied to each lens element is carefully calculated to match the lens type and glass used, and also to assure the uniform color balance that characterizes Nikkor lenses. This results in lenses that meet much higher standards than the rest of the industry.
Close-Range Correction system
The Close-Range Correction (CRC) system is one of Nikon's most important focusing innovations, for it provides superior picture quality at close focusing distances and increases the focusing range. With CRC, the lens elements are configured in a "floating element" design wherein each lens group moves independently to achieve focusing. This ensures superior lens performance even when shooting at close distances.
Distance information
D-type and G-type Nikkors relay subject-to-camera distance information to AF Nikon camera bodies. This then makes possible advances like 3D Matrix Metering and 3D Multi-Sensor Balanced Fill-Flash. Note: D-type and G-type Nikkors provide distance information to the following cameras: Auto exposure; F6, F5, F100, F90X, F80, F75, F70, F65, F60, F55, F50, Pronea S, Pronea 600i, D2 series, D1 series, D100, and D70s/D70. Flash control; F6, F5, F100, F90X, F80, F75, F70, D2 series, D1 series, D100, and D70s/D70 cameras.

Here comes this little gem to save the day. This quickly became the lens that stays on my camera until I need something special. With a 36mm full-frame equivalent focal length, it is just wide enough to make most compositions easy when walking around town without throwing off perspective too greatly or requiring you to stand unrealistically far away from your subject(s). At F2.8, it is plenty fast for general use.
Now, as some have mentioned, it is a 22 year old design that, on a 24MP DX sensor, will begin to show its age. Such a high resolution in a small space means that any tiny imperfection is magnified. No, this lens is not as tack-sharp as some. Really though, who cares? I've taken fantastic shots with it, and unless you make a living out of huge photo prints, you'll never see the difference in real world use. For an inexpensive, compact and light lens, this makes an excellent pairing for a normal-wide field of view on a DX camera. If lab performance really matters, you can certainly spend more than twice as much for the wonderful 24mm F1.8 AFS lens that Nikon now makes. For real world use though, I prefer the convenience of this guy.
Obviously it lacks a focus motor, which is overrated (but of course this lens will not work on bodies without a focus motor), and it lacks the nano crystal coat of the newer 1.4 G, meaning you might get some lens flare, but so what, people actually edit lens flare into their photos now for that Instagram feel.
If you know what your doing you can save your money and buy this, and live happily ever after with your remaining $1,805 you saved by not buying the 1.4 G. If you need those extra stops, just put a flash on your camera.
Nikon AF FX NIKKOR 24mm f/2.8D Fixed Zoom Lens with Auto Focus for Nikon DSLR Cameras - White Box (New)
this is not new, even the lens is labeled used-good it does function with decent IQ. does not AF with a Nikon 5300, but it does with the 600, so it's ok for the application I have in mind.
As you can see in the images, the wrapped (not boxed) lens says used-good, and the poor way it was shipped. I'm actually surprised it works at all. one star. You people can do better, Amazon

I do a lot of nightlife club photography and whether I'm photographing an up and coming DJ or live band, this 24mm lens helps me get the shots I want, whether or not the stage is well lit or not. Mounting this lens onto my Nikon D750 FX-format Digital SLR Camera Body , I'm able to raise my ISO just enough so that I'm not too worried about the 2.8 f-stop being too high. I can still get a lot of light into the camera and get a properly exposed image, even in dark situations. The autofocus performance on this lens is okay for my use. Sometimes I just go manual focus anyway, but in most situations i'm a bit lazy and prefer the autofocus. I was thinking about getting an off-brand lens with a 1.4 aperture but without autofocus but in the end I thought to myself... nah... that's a bad idea.
All in all, I've had this lens for a few months now and I love it. I hope to one day upgrade to the newest version of this lens with the best aperture but this will definitely do for now and I have no complaints. Get yours and see how you like it!

Consigliato.
