In a beautifully detailed wordless picture book, a tumbledown building becomes home sweet home for a found family.

A lonely little girl and her grandparent need to fill the run-down apartment in their building. But taking over the rooms above their shop will mean major renovations for the new occupants, and none of the potential renters can envision the possibilities of the space – until one special couple shows up. With their ingenuity, the little girl’s big heart, and heaps of hard work, the desperate fixer-upper begins to change in lovely and surprising ways. In this bustling wordless picture book, JonArno Lawson’s touching story and Qin Leng’s gentle illustrations capture all angles of the building’s transformation, as well as the evolving perspectives of the girl and her grandparent. A wordless picture book that celebrates the power of community, the joys of new friends and the magic that happens when you open your heart, and fill your home with love and joy.

My son read it and says it's a great book.

A young girl is shown getting up and helping her grandfather in their store. They put a sign in the window to rent the apartment upstairs. Several people look at the rundown place and turn away. They give up and then a young couple comes by and wants the place. They clean it up and fix it up and then start to fix up the store. They also help out in the store. The store name is changed to “& Friends”. They become one big happy family.
The story itself is endearing. The advantage of a wordless book is getting a child to use language to tell the story. Great opportunity to expand and build vocabulary and language skills. Much fine detail to be observed. Excellent purchase for families with young children.

Lowell and Friends General Store occupies the first level of a run down building. An older grandparent runs the store while a small lonely grandchild helps where she can. There's an apartment above the store that needs to be rented but, it won't be easy finding people not afraid of putting in some hard work. Low and behold the perfect couple comes along and transforms the place and building into a warm and welcoming place. I'm generally not a fan of books for young children without words but, the watercolor illustrations are very nice and it was fairly easy to transform the story into words for discussion with little ones.

I love this wordless picture book! The storyline is easy to follow and the illustrations totally enliven the story. As the story progresses, I just love how much light and color creeps in. Through simple color, postural and expression changes, the story, which starts out somber and washed out with muted hues becomes bright, lively and fresh. Where there were once scowls and frowns, there are now smiles and colorful flowers abloom. Everywhere there are glimmers of hope and vision, showing that putting effort and dedication into life will grow something very beautiful in its place. In this story, the effort and dedication ends up growing a family and community. What could be more beautiful than that?!
