The size is super small so it fits in my cords bag (It's actually smaller than my mouse!) and uses the popular USB micro b to power it up so I don't have to bring a cord I'm not already carrying (like the cord to charge other devices: headphones, tablets, or android phones).
Con: This only runs on the 2.4g/100mbps max wireless and seems to only support 10/100 speeds even when hardwired (at least that's what my networking settings on my laptop said), but it comes with a CAT 6 flat cable which was really a nice touch). But this is fine because my main focus is sharing iPhone hotspot internet which is below 100mbps anyway. If my purpose was to give myself a private network at faster speeds, I would spend the extra money to get a device with gigabit ports and more LAN ports. But at under $30, this has everything I need and some.
You can connect to hotel etc WiFi and send all your traffic over a VPN. Have tested so far with Proton, and OpenVPN. Can also be used as a VPN Server if you need that functionality as well.
After the update I was able to tether with my phone successfully and it showed multiple wifi-spots that I could use to repeat the signal compared to only two or three that showed before the update. It's still fails to reconnect automatically 2 Wi-Fi signal so you can use it as a repeater it requires a logging in and re-establishing connections.
End of the latest update.
And you know what else is great about it it's tiny. I don't know if you've been shopping for routers lately but I'll save you the trouble buddy there are are only a few out there in the entire world that come in the colour yellow. So get your hands on one of these as fast as you can you will be very happy.
Ok so despite the fetching presentation a few other things deserve comment. It's powered by a micro USB power source so if you're biased against micro USB power sources don't look here. Okay there is no USB C and there is no macro USB power source, just micro USB and you get a free white cable.
Now if you want to tether your phone like I did you can supply your own cable but you will need the standard USB plug on one end. That way if you want to get a nice bright yellow cord you can, conversely if you would like black to go with like a bumblebee theme that's doable also.
I thought the user set up interface was kind of clunky but it did get the job done. If you set up a router before you'll be fine if you haven't there's a little bit of a learning curve but it's not that bad.
One of the best things about this device is the value just look at all the different modes of operations that it can do it's fascinating. Sure it does WiFi signal (could be stronger - you will never get testicular cancer with little guy) , has tech support and even a user interface.
I set it up with to be used with my cell phone as a tether allowing me to route information through a VPN on this device. I couldn't be happier with the result. I found that the connection speed was well above or at least on par with any other router that I've used or Wi-Fi boosters.
It's so small that it's easily hidden and it's great to have the option of taking it with you when you travel to provide an additional layer of security at hotels.
It's too bad they don't make something like this for the bed bugs and covid virus that's found quite commonly in most hotels where people stay.
My closing comments are that it came with very nice biodegradable packing and a simple package overall. There is an included white land cable if that was required as part of your setup. The owner's manual is very simplified but it was enough for me to get started and I didn't have to consult anything else.
And finally if you had the desire to have a router that look like the Yamaha racing motorcycles from the late 1960s through 1980s get this baby get some black cords and you'll be all set. You could put a big old number one if you wanted too - in honor of “King Kenny” of your very own router race course.
Update after a month 5 stars are now 3!
So the pro remains it's beautiful color and the fact that allows me to use a tether and create a Wi-Fi hotspot for my other devices.
The con is that after multiple attempts I have been unable to configure this as a repeater. And when it does searches of networks to repeat even though I know my phone's Wi-Fi hotspot is 2.4 GHz that hotspot never shows up on the search. So that's a total failure. The support on the website is limited from the manufacturer and given this is the main reason many people would purchase this so that they can create a secure hotspot from free hotspots found in hotels you may want to consider purchasing this particular router until the company updates the firmware so that the device will actually function as it is described.
As someone who often finds themselves abroad for extended periods, my entertainment needs are quite specific. I have a penchant for U.S.-based streaming services like Hulu and Paramount Plus and prefer a seamless cast on the TV. This little gadget has effectively eliminated the need to lug around cables and constantly tether my laptop to the TV via HDMI, which can be quite a hassle.
I've put this router through its paces a few times now, and it's been a standout for the money spent. Naturally, with VPN activation, there's a slight dip in speed, but that's to be expected and is a small trade-off for the convenience it offers.
However, it hasn't been all smooth sailing. I encountered a snag when trying to connect my iPhone to the router, and I wasn't alone. The lack of resolutions for this issue on the company's website or even on YouTube was a bit disheartening. Technical support for complex issues is difficult to access, with the company website offering only generic, AI-generated responses.
That said, given the router's budget-friendly price point, I wasn't expecting five-star service. But this is certainly something to ponder if you're eyeing their pricier models where the customer service, or lack thereof, could be a dealbreaker.
In summary, if you're a frequent traveler in need of an easy, affordable way to enjoy your favorite streaming services on the go, this is a fantastic option. Just be prepared to do a bit of digging and DIY if you run into any technical troubles.
