Westone Story
Established in 1959 as a custom-fit earpiece manufacturer, Westone has become known worldwide as 'The In-Ear Experts.' From its roots of working with hearing health professionals to produce custom-fit products for hearing aids and protection, Westone has expanded into offering consumer audio products and is the world's premier designer of high performance in-ear musicians' monitors and earphones.
Westone became a master of audio technology as the result of requests from popular rock musicians in the early 1990s. They wanted the ability to hear specific instruments or vocals while on stage yet reduce overall stage volume to protect their hearing. As a solution, Westone created the first balanced armature driver in-ear monitor that became the standard for professional musicians.

Product Description
The Quad-Driver Westone W40 in-ear headphone will take your listening experience to an entirely new level. Four balanced armature drivers and a three-way crossover network deliver breathtaking clarity and realism. Westone’s True-Fit technology provides superior ergonomics and comfort. Westone's 50+ years of experience with in-ear applications has yielded a low-profile, lightweight, universal earpiece which delivers maximum comfort and in-ear coupling for dynamic transfer of sound. A replaceable cable connection includes the braided EPIC cable and round MFi cable with 3-button Apple Control System and mic function, including volume +/- , tracking +/- , phone answer, and Siri activation. Westone's balanced armature drivers are significantly more compact and efficient than traditional dynamic drivers. By combining multiple balanced armature drivers with sophisticated crossover networks, Westone earphones provide enhanced sonic detail and a frequency range that extends well beyond typical in-ear solutions. Exchangeable black, blue and red color faceplates are included with secure attachment. Each set of W40 earphones comes with an EPIC replaceable cable and MFi G2 cable, premium comfort tips, mini-monitor vault, cleaning tool, and 2-year warranty. The Mini Monitor Vault is constructed of a high-impact polymer and is the perfect size for travel and storage. It features a protective foam interior and weather resistant design. The Westone W40s are ideal for classic and hard rock, heavy metal, alternative, classical, vocal, jazz, and acoustic music, delivering stunning audio in a quad-driver design. Make sure you try all the eartips provided to find the correct fit and comfort for you. If the eartip is too small and doesn’t create a complete seal inside your ear canal you will lose low end frequencies. Choose the largest tip that is still comfortable for you. You may even need a different size tip for each ear. Make sure the right earpiece is worn on the right ear and the left earpiece on the left ear. The earpieces are marked, and when worn the cable should point to your front and wrap around to the back of your ear.

This review is strictly based on my opinion and tastes in sound and music. I am 53 years old and have lost the ability (happens as you get older) to hear certain hi frequencies, that those of you who are a fair bit younger can still hear and enjoy. The point being that I may not be overly affected by what some describe as high frequency screechiness or sibilance ( I prefer clear detailed highs, mids and lows in their natural form to overpowered low detailed highs and muddy thumping bass).
Tested on iPad, with and without Oppo h2 Dac and Chord Mojo also on AV receiver.
Each unit was left to burn in 24/7 for seven days and listened to before and after. The Fostex, Beyerdynamics, Sennheisers and HIFIMAN became smoother, warmer and IMO more enjoyable after the burn in. The other units mentioned did not seem to change radically or become any more enjoyable.
I have had the following headphones and returned them over the last 4 months ( some tested for 2 weeks, others for almost a month with music from techno, rock, pop and all the way to classical and opera (also used a audio reference cd for more comparisons).
Sennheiser 598( good sound but feel like cheap plastic and ear cups are shallow) - Shure 1540 ( smooth sound, wide soundstage fore closed back and very comfortable sent the back when the Fostex arrived) - Beyerdynamics 990 pro 250 Ohm( most comfortable earpads of all and close in sound to the t90) - master & dynamic M40 ( very nice build and sound, but earpads are to narrow and have a high clamping force) - Blue Lola ( sound ok but heavy and awkward) - Audio Technica M50 and Vmoda 100 ( both ok for the price, just not in the same league as the keepers).
Keepers.
Fostex TH900 ( my favourite of all for sound, looks and comfort)
Hifiman 400i ( wide soundstage, great sound and comfort) - Oppo pm3 ( great all-around sound and comfort also can't get them out of my wife's hands) - Beyerdynamic t90(crisp, clear, detailed and comfortable) - Bowers and Wilkins P7 ( awesome build quality, fantastic sound - a little on the smaller side in earpads).
These 2 have very positive reviews across the web and I really can't add anything significant to what has already been said.
IEMs - Westone W40 - great comfort with a ton of tips to choose from. Sound is clear and detailed and they are so comfortable that you forget they are in your ears.
Shure SE846 - a noticeable step above the W40s in build quality and sound.extremely well regarded across the web for these
Sound is detailed, clear and solid. They come with three different types of exchangeable tubes so that you can adjust for bright, neutral or more bassy sound. I wasn't as fond of the ear tips that came with these but end up using the silicon 12mm from the Westones thus solving the comfort issue. After testing, I went back to the neutral tubes and have enjoyed these ever since.
Sent from my iPad
Instead they have bundled it all together. But I will try to do justice.
I have tried W20,W30,W40 and W50 and here are my ratings.
W20-5 Stars
W30-2.5 starts
W40-3.5 Starts
W50-2 Starts
I have also tried Etymotic ER4P and Shure 535V.
Westone W20 is probably the best earphone. Period.
The price, the comfort, its so light and yet so powerful, the clarity of sound. etc.
I switched between W20 and W30 for the same song . I used spotify with songs downloaded at 190kpbs or greater.
W20 had much brighter and rich sound.W30 appeared muffed or low in volume compared to W20.
W30 I felt was very dull compared to W20.
W40 I had high hopes for this. But I don't think I am planning on keeping this. It comes with a bunch of nice accessories, at least 10 pairs of customizable ear tip, interchangeable faceplates, cables. Ultimately I cannot justify the 499$ price . I had a Sony XBA-H1(Two driver Hybrid) which I purchased for 148$.Sony sounds as good. The Bass is much better in the Sony XBA-H1.I think there is too much hype created on this product. I spent a lot of time switching between the Sony XBA-H1 and Westone W40, I expected much more for the 500$ price. Frankly I could not find anything that would make me keep this. Its just a good earphone which is very expensive,
Please try other IEM before shelling out money for expensive W40.
W50:It was ok, Its very similar to the sound signature of W30.It was very dark or dull for me and frankly I cannot justify the 600$ price.
Summary:W20 beats every other earphone I have tried in terms of price,comfort,clarity.W20 is the clear winner and thus my search for a great IEM End.
Top reviews from other countries
- The presentation is worthy of the category of the product: They bring a pair of cables, very comfortable and very well constructed (I use the twisted without micro). Both of them of very good quality. Enough olives so that each one finds the one that fits him best. A very nice box to keep them. And also, as we know, you can change the 'look' based on putting exteriors in three different colors: black, red and blue.
- Once placed, comfort is absolute. The cables fit perfectly. Come on, you forget that you wear them.
- SOUND: They honor their price and rank. Sound clear, clean, very spacious. Nothing dry or analytical. Very natural. You can clearly see the fantastic work done by the four drivers of each handset.
I had heard very good IEMs: The magnificent Audio Pinnacle P1, the small but fantastic Q-Jays, etc, etc ... but when you hear these you remember the old saying that "the best is the enemy of the good." Now one realizes that, being the others very good, these are a step ahead. The cleaning of the voices, their sharpness, etc ... not the same as the previous ones (and others).
Conclusion ?: Yes, they are expensive. But they honor their price. Plus, you save money: If you buy these, you do not have to try others!
If you can, buy them. If not, gather them and you buy them. If you want to spend less, Pinnacle P1 or Q-Jays are great alternatives.
But beware! If you buy any of the above - or others -, do not listen to these anymore. Because if you wear them ... it will be difficult for you to continue using the above
Everything looks and sound premium (these retails in the 500.00-700.00 range). Package comes in a nice Westone box where the earphones site in a nice foam crate. The orange box contains multiple tips (foam and Westone latex high quality). I personally use and kept on the medium foam tips. Nice isolation and sound balance. I really like both cable but I also use the nice twisted one. Feels solid (even though it's not huge) and it does not tangle easily + stays put behind my ears.
Comfort is great, excellent. I prefer it over the Shure SE215 and Westone 1, for example. The housings are slightly smaller than these and they are perfect for me. They stay in ear and keep in place.
Earphones build feels solid overall. And they came with the red and blue plates, which is a very nice touch. Other plate (red, blue and black) are available with the appropriate tool if I want to modify the look. Nice solid classy touch to tthe iem.
The sound? Wow. The precision. I like my stuff with a good bass and a lot of details. So far, Ostry KC06A were my go to earphones, but it seems they were beaten. W40 does not have a strong mid bass but everything is so well defined. Bass is well balanced and present. Just enough to like it, but way leaner than most low price earphones. Mids and vocals are totally awesome. Details and color are up there. High quality. HIghs are really, but really good. Well defined, no sibilance or harshness at all. It's my first step in the high end, I am totally satisfied. Soundstage and separation is very good also. Male or female voice can be heard in so much details! Whispers, breaths, you hear everything.
I personally listened (and still listening) to a lot of headphones/earphones and I am not the one to say that I hear new things in my recordings all the time. Yes, most of the products have their signature and I have fun listening to my very long playlist with them. But these Westone W40 are really a new beast for me and yes, I am discovering new things in songs I have listened many times before with other earphones.
They are that good.

Je connaissais déjà ces écouteurs et ils répondent exactement à mes besoins de musicien.
Très satisfait.
