Firstly, I will be buying another bag, on the assumption I got a "poor quality" bag (See: Cons); to see if my issues were a one-off.

Pros: The quality of the product, and the results is / are amazing; it's everything you want in an organic fertilizer at a great price. The smell is fine: it's organic lawn fertilizer, not potpourri for your home.

Cons: Applying the product (at the proper rate for my spreader as written on the bag) was a major hassle, as the product was NOT uniformly sized / pelletized, with significant parts of the "mix" too large to be applied at the rate the bag suggested for my drop spreader (too large to fit through the openings).

This application problem persisted even after I checked my drop spreader was properly calibrated (it was). As a result, the rotating feeder bar in my spreader basically ground the entire mix into a fine dust, negating whatever appropriate rate I was supposed to be applying the product; what should have been short-work took 2x to 3x longer than it should have, with a lot of hassle.

I contacted Espoma regarding the application rate for my spreader, if it were a misprint on the bag. They offered to refund my purchase, without addressing my question, so I'm going to assume the drop rate for my feeder is correct, which means their quality control for this bag was poor.

Let me be clear: I don't want a refund, I just want the high-quality product I bought to "work" when I need to apply it. That's it.

I would heartily recommend this product to anyone, on the assumption I got a poor-quality bag. Considering I haven't seen any complaints similar to what I experienced, I'm going to assume this is the case.

I'd easily give this a perfect score if I hadn't encountered any issues with applying the product, like I did.

My lawn has improved after using this product but it is befuddling to me that the manufacturer does not state how many square feet of coverage per bag. So I have guestimated at one bag per 5000 sq. ft.is that too much or too little I don't know. It is easy to spread, pet friendly, and the yard does not smell like a chicken coop after application.

The fertilizer seems to work ok. However, the smell is awful! My neighbors complained about the odor. After I used my sprinkler system for a couple days and got a light rain, the smell subsided. I don’t think I will purchase again due to the smell.
