The Wrong Witch #2

Magic and Mayhem

Rate this book
All it took was one bite.

A week ago, I was the perpetual screw up of the Bannister coven and a probationary agent for the Arcane Bureau of Investigation. Somehow, I’ve managed to get myself mated to an Acosta Alpha, pissed off my family, and gotten on the radar of a dark Fae.

As much as I’d like to bury my head in the sand, I have a badge to secure—and with a new case on my proverbial desk—a job to do. Because I’m not the first witch that the Fae has tried to steal, but I will definitely be the last.

Just as soon as I get this curse under control…

I figured out part of the conundrum of these books. Each genre we read has basic expectations attached to it. With Urban Fantasy, we expect magic and creatures and action set in a contemporary world. Romance can be, and often is, part of that, but it is rarely the entire focus. And the sexual part of any romance in Urban Fantasy is almost always a sidebar (while in straight-up paranormal it is often a given) at least in the bazillion I have read. That is what throws me in this series. We have all the parts that make an urban fantasy story amazing but they keep getting interrupted by Looooong (entire chapters) forays into graphic sex scenes. I guess I’m just not used to (or care for quite honestly) reading an erotic romance when I pick up an UF book.

SO… in this book, I just skipped those chapters! And while it made for an awfully short book, it was still fabulous. The storyline continues to be engaging, the characters are all kinds of fun and the action and conflict superbly written. The book is not nearly long enough, though. Take out those sex scenes and it barely rises above novella length. And that is a shame because it would have been close to a five star read for me if we had more time to see what happens with both Nico and Wren’s family situations. Both are extremely interesting, yet just dropped midstream. So much more depth could have been achieved in other areas, as well, if a bit more time had been given.

I would also highly recommend waiting to begin this series until the last book is written. Each story ends with a HUGE cliffhanger. It didn’t bother me too much after the first book, as I was able to dive right into this one for the answers needed. This one ends on an even more precarious note, though, so that cliffhanger angst and frustration is ridiculously high - almost enough to chuck the whole series over. Seriously, even taking the plotline far enough to answer a few of the dangling threads would have worked wonders.

The Chaos Never Ends

This book was non stop chaos. Wren and Nico faced obstacle after obstacle. Wren and Nico can't catch a break. This book picks up where book 1 left off. Not only does Wren need to process everything she endured previously now she's newly mated and dealing with what it means to be mated to an Alpha Wolf.

I love the growth between Wren and Nico. Nico loves her unconditionally even with her doubts and insecurities. Wren is finally an official Agent but still has a target on her back. Between her families hatred and Desmond the Dark Fae trying to get her; Wren will need all the help she can get. Its a good thing she has great friends and an Alpha Mate watching her back and keeping her safe from all the mayhem going on in her life.

Be prepared for Laughs, Sarcasm Galore and Steam as Wren and Nico work through their growing pains and forging their new lives together amongst the chaos and mayhem.

Oh my goodness, what type of fabulousness did I just read?!

If you read the first book you are going to love the second. I mean Wren and Nico are just awesome together as we saw in the first book. This one just gets so much better.

I love their relationship. Nico loves Wren so much is amazing. And you can just tell Wren is like yeah right, I don’t believe you, much like the first book. But this book they just go through so much that it tightens their bond.

There is a lot going on in this one that you are stunned in awe by how it all comes together. I mean I have so many emotions, I really wanted to throw my kindle across the room a few times because I was just shocked.

The girls are back in this one, Fiona, Hannah, and Malia. They are such amazing friends. Wren is so lucky to have them. I definitely liked some of the other side characters that came back in this one.

There is some great action, drama, romance, comedy…ok ok you get it. It has the best of all of them. But man, the book kept me on the edge of my seat freaking out and waiting for what was going to happen next. And when it does, wow it just blew my mind.

I highly recommend this book!! It is SO good!!

MAGIC AND MAYHEM is the second book in The Wrong Witch series, and I definitely recommend you read book one first, or you won't have the faintest idea what's going on or why.

Wren has been pushed to her limits and still needs to deal with the ABI and her so-called husband before she can sit down. Bit by bit, she finds her feet with the help of her friends. Nico promises his family will love her and, as we've already met his mum, it seems as though she is worrying for nothing. Fools!

This book is non-stop action - either with smexy times or with full-out war from the Bannister clan. Their 'little secret' is now known and they're not happy.

Be warned - this ends on one helluva cliffhanger! I honestly can't wait to find out what happens next. No matter what, I'll hold onto my hat and take a deep breath because I think I'll need it!

A brilliant addition to the series and definitely recommended by me.

I thought I guessed what would likely happen. I was wrong, so wrong! The twist in this story had me going, wtf!
Betrayal, action, hurt, fae, and the unknown. Oh, and spicy toel curling smut!

I know love made Family the MCs have and love the author has written the books so well I feel invested in the MCs and side characters.

The mental damage from the treatment dished out by the FMC blood family is dark. She could have become some of the worst in that world. Instead, she has this inner strength and outlook, which makes her a caring, sassy, fierce, and funny person. I'm cheering her on and hoping those who hurt her will get what they really deserve!

The final betrayal!

Wren Bannister finally has a family that loves and appreciates her…just not the family she was expecting. Somehow, she is mated to Nico Acosta, an alpha shifter, and she has the best roomies ever! Just survive one more test and Wren, along with her best friends, will have a new future as ABI agents. Of course, there is still the little matter of her curse!

This is turning into quite an exciting series! It has all the right elements that I look for in paranormal adventure – danger, twists, magic, and romance. I received an advance copy but my review is honest and voluntary.

This is the second book in this series. They need to be read in order. Wren was the black sheep of her family a week ago and now she is the Mate to the future Alpha Nico. They have solved the case of who was taking the missing women. Now Nico and Wren must figure out how they fit together. Then there is Wren’s family. They know things about her and were keeping her true nature from her. I loved everything about this book and couldn’t put it down. The ending though. Annie you are trying to kill me. I need the next book right away. Lol. This series is fantastic and I can’t recommend it enough. Annie is a fantastic author. I recommend all her books. You have done it again Annie.

The story picks up where it left off after Wren’s ordeal from the end of the first book to her finding out that she’s maybe kinda sorta (definitely) mated to Nico. Not the best time to deal with that when her literal wicked witch grandmother has shown up for some reason. And if near death and kidnapping weren’t enough now Wren has to complete her course to become an ABI agent and figure out what to do with her semi-unwanted husband... while hoping her family doesn’t cause too much problems.

Considering her family sucks so much Wren isn’t looking forward to meeting Nico’s family once they more or less settle things between them. What started as a nice dinner with a big loud loving family turns into a disaster not of her making. But some truths about her own family and why they have been treating her the way they have start to make sense.

And if family drama was all she had to deal with things might not have been too bad. Unfortunately Wren can’t catch a break and the corruption and secrets of the camp has followed them home. Because someone wants Wren and she seems destined to be a pawn in everybody else’s game. Then this take quite an unexpected turn...

I adore Wren and Nico and all of Wren’s friends. Her family still sucks... actually are suckier. Really think the whole disaster with Nico’s family could have been handled way better. I’m with him on that couldn’t they have just talked about it first? I would really like to know exactly what happened to her as a child and really why her family treated her that way. I mean if you want something from someone wouldn’t it be easier to be nice and instill loyalty into them? Just saying flies and honey and all that.

Anywho... I read the first book like a week and a half ago so I was anxiously awaiting this one. Sadly now my impatient self has to wait till forever (December) to find out what happens next. And what happens next is most certainly going to be chaotic and interesting but probably mostly chaotic. I mean we do learn more about Wren in this book as she learns more about herself but I have a feeling there is more to it. Can’t wait to find out! This was a great follow up to the first book and I’m expecting more great things to come!

Excuse me while I have a harsh word with Annie... LOL Kidding, kind of.

Now, I have to start off saying, I fluved this book. Every single, solitary word was freaking fabulous. Fabulous people! You hear me? The story was on the run to win the race right out of the gate. Bannister show down and all.

Annie is good at rocking boats with her stories. You never know what is coming next and the minute you say, "oh, I bet this or that happens". Its like she knows. So she then she just.... makes the chaos happen.

Maybe rocked the boat isn't quit right. Oh no, she rocks it but there is more. It flips, sinks and then she brought it back like the goddess she is. Only to rock it again. This is not a Cinderella story. Though there is a prince charming, we call his Mr. Smexy pants but I digress. Its gritty, deep and a helluva read. There is not a dull moment.

Reading this book was the most intense 5 or so hours of my life. Like I wasn't sure at one point that I would make it... LOL I had some heart palpitations, gasped so hard that I choked (literally!), called Annie a few maybe not so nice words. (Don't worry, she enjoys the trauma she causes) and then, as I hadn't been through enough.... I threatened to divorce her. I was like nope, I'm not liking you anymore. (You're probably like, why?!? Or you could careless but Imma tell ya why anyway.)

I was not prepared for the level of... anything. Nico and Wren together is fire. They play hard, fight hard and make up even harder. There is a lot happening in this story and honestly it was an amazing ride. Like I am ready for this merry-go round of hellacious chaos to start again. I want more. I need it. If I don't get it soon, well, I have divorce papers ready. LOL

Magic and Mayhem (Arcane Souls #2)
by Annie Anderson

***5 stars***

Could Wren and Nico be any more magnificent? I think not! They are deliciously naughty and I love it! Talk about two individuals who always bring the heat, douse the flames, and then burn the whole mother down again!

To say Wren's got herself into a pickle would be a complete understatement but we'll go with it. The girl has always had to prove others wrong, especially her so-called family. Can I just say I'm all for cutting the cancer out, and that whole family is cancer! They never loved or appreciated Wren for the quirky gal she is, and she doesn't need them now. Or so I say...

But what happens when your whole reality is turned inside out and you have no clue what to do next? Or who to turn to? Things are about to get extra spicy and I'm here for it! Hell hath no fury and all that fun stuff...

Wren and Nico are back along with the rest of the girls as this wild and fun story continues. It was a great read and had be glued to the end to see what craziness would happen this time. Some secrets are revealed and they were awesome but also lead to to some more questions. And the ends was the best and made me almost scream. Just a good story and great characters that I really enjoyed. Wren and Nico are a blast together and made me laugh a lot.

Only Annie Anderson can write such relatable characters that I get actual anxiety wondering what is going to happen to them!

This was a roller coaster! I loved every single second of it. I read it beginning to end in one sitting, I couldn’t put it down.

I can’t wait for the next book in the series. The ending kept me up half the night wondering what’s next!!! The Audible for this is going to be absolute fire 🔥

Not gonna lie, the wait might kill me! 🤦🏼‍♀️.

Talk about cliffhanger

Annie has done it again. I swear I am going to lose it waiting for the next book to come out in this series. I wasn't so sure in book one of this series I was going to be I to this one as much as her others. Well this 2nd book just hooked me good.

Omg omg the ending got me f'd up!!! So book 2 picks up right where book 1 ended...let's be honest we were all stuck on 'married' at the end of book 1. I love their relationship, and how Nico loves on Wren. Now I'm stuck in a book slump waiting on the finale 😣

Just like always, Annie hit it out of the park. One of my favorite things about her as an author is how the books move. In all honesty, it makes me mad because it ends too soon! A lot of times in series, the heroine can start off strong and then as soon as they hook up with the hero she becomes a mess. But not Wren. Wren kicks ass. You do get see a vulnerable side, but it only enhances and fleshes out the character. I do love how the book switches POV between Wren and Nico. Overall, it's a lovely book. If you have read Annie's books before, you won't be disappointed. The only thing I would change is the cliff hanger. It obviously sets you up for the next book. Annndddd I can't wait!

"I was married to a werewolf." - Wren

Wren was on the chopping block for what had happened with the apothecary shop. Needing to pass the test to become an Arcane Bureau of Investigation agent or push up daisies. . . The Bannister family not batting an eye about what was happening to her. Until Wren becomes entangled with a shifter.

And of course, like everything else with Wren's life, go big or go home. She's now the proud mate of an Acosta Alpha, who just so happened to leave out a few details regarding matters! No time to dwell on the little things when she's thrown into taking the final exam for the ABI. Oh, and still having that target on her back involving a dark fae. . . Will Wren pass her exam? Can she even be a good agent? What's going to happen with her magic and "control" over it?

"Daydreaming about a hot shifter was far superior to impending doom." - Wren

Or life in general, and there are some very smexy shifters out there. . . I can relate so much to Wren! Being the black sheep of the family and frowned upon. I loved seeing how she handled actually being treated positively and with encouragements. After being used to constant negativity and people looking down on her it's hard to take compliments. It honestly shocks your entire system because you're just waiting for the other shoe to drop. . .

Only Wren's surrounded by an amazing cast of characters! Not to mention going through the "honeymoon" stage with Nico. Though meeting the parents was a crazy endeavor, I mean anytime you meet your spouse's parents it's a bit nerve wracking! Along with seeing the difference in how families behave and treat one another.

I loved how Annie included short recaps from the previous book to help refresh the mind. I was also grinning ear to ear when some of the original cast was brought back. Namely Wyatt. . .that wolf shifter can throw me over his shoulder any day! I would not complain in the least. Wyatt's still one of my favorite characters and I need more of him in the next book!

Loved the banter between Nico and Wren! Nico may be an alpha, but Wren knows how to cut him down and keep him humble. Not to say Nico doesn't "punish" Wren when she goes too far. I really loved the twist with their characters and Wren's magic! How they also balance each other out and encourage one another. Wren still never backs down from anyone, including Theo, you will have to read the book to find out who they are.

I was also really excited to see the progression with all the girls from Wren's cabin! I loved how they all formed a bond with one another and continued to connect. Along with their banter with one another and how they can see through Wren. Enjoyed Malia and her interaction with Erica before she was convinced to do a task. I don't know why, but I am very interested in meeting Fiona's father. Even if it is just for a brief scene or a big epic one. Just saying.

This book will have you feeling an array of emotions. For me it hit close to home with Wren's family and just how far they sunk their claws into her. Not being able to fully handle or understand being surrounded by loving people who freely give out said love. Not needing something in return from her at all! Also really loved Nico and his husband side. Loved seeing more of his wolf and how both sides of him react to Wren. Even if sometimes it may be a little over the top, but he's a shifter!

There's violence in the book along with some gore. A crazy scene that will break your heart and having you cheering with the main characters. The cliffhanger is another one that will have you begging for the next book! Annie did an amazing job dropping you the way she does. I am so ready for book three.

Language is prominent in the book along with multiple POVs. The spicy scenes are fantastic! MF action and all the feels, Wren and Nico are trying to understand one another and figure out their dynamics.

Enjoy the read with our head-strong Wren who doesn't hold back or really have a filter. Don't forget to give the author some stars!

I enjoyed this book. I did. It’s well written, the characters are great (you love the good guys and hate who they want you to), and the plot is engaging. I even laughed out loud at parts.

So, why 3 stars? (Spoilers ahead!)

My main gripe is the pacing. This starts with events in book 1 and bleeds into this story as it picks up immediately after the finish of the first. Everything happens in too short of a timeframe to be believable. It’s jarring and pulls you out of the story.

I get it with Nico and Wren. Though I prefer when fated mates get a chance to spend more time together before declaring their love, the trope still gives you a solid reason to believe they could feel so strongly in such a short period. But what about everyone else?

In a week this group of girls has become so close that they’re family? A week? Come on! It’s just too much to suspend your disbelief. You don’t even see them talk - we’re just told that they now know and love each other. It’s all too convenient.

I understand these stories are meant to be fast and fun, but Anderson is a good enough writer that I would have happily read a longer book to see Wren build relationships, get to know her new friends, and train long enough to realise she was capable of making it in the arcane world.

As much as I’d have enjoyed it, the author didn’t even need to write much more if she didn’t want to. Just a couple of sentences to mark a jump forward would have been better:

“Weeks passed in a blur of studying, avoiding Ames, and getting to know my camp mates. I’d never spent so much time around magic without being terrified. Nights with Nico weren’t so bad either!”

Would that have been so hard?

It feels like the author knew where she wanted to end up, but couldn’t be bothered with the journey.

That’s not even mentioning the whole “yay, we’re all agents now!” part. **hard eye roll**

Sure, Wren is a prodigy, but what about everyone else? How easy is this test? Why even bother with training camps when anyone can walk in and breeze the “big exam” after a week?

It’s just lazy.

On the subject of lazy. The big, bad Fae king got all of a few pages to do absolutely nothing after so much hype. How disappointing.

The illusion that got her there was excellent - exciting, bordering on heartbreaking - just to fritter away the realm experience in a few short passages. I do think the next book will return us there, so I hope we’ll get a more satisfying end to that particular storyline.

You might not think it from this review, but I really did enjoy this book. I couldn’t put it down. Annie Anderson is a fantastic writer, and the world she’s created is excellent.

Nitpicking and pacing faults aside, this is a funny and often exciting instalment in a great series. The first one was better, but I still I have high hopes for book three. Especially after an insanely intriguing cliffhanger ending. Onward!

Wow!!! I just finished chapter eleven and let me just say... It's doozy of a chapter. It made me angry, it made me sad, it made me feel a bit numb, and for a slight moment it made me feel hopeful. The strongest emotions were anger and sadness though. I'm not sure if the family will heal after that fight. My heart is breaking for so many reasons right now, and I'm nly half way through the book. I don't know if my heart is goona survive this book.

I just can't get enough of Nico's sexiness, or Wren's sassiness. Together they are a rollercoaster ride of good times. This book picks up right where the last book left off. Nico is in his cabin with Wren after her rescue answering questions when her grandmother storms in demanding Wren leave with her. Nico, not having any of her attiutde, tell 'Granny' that Wren is his wife and she isn't going anywhere with the crazy ole lady. Wren is completely dumbstuck by his declaration, not realizing that his claiming her was the sameas a marriage to shifters. Of course, there's not much she can do about it now, so she accepts it and they try to settle into their married lives together.

However, as fate has proven in the past, danger, destruction and bad luck just follow Wren everywhere. First, the introduction to the families doesn't really go well... which is putting it mildly. Then, she discovers some very unsettling news about her own family. Finally, she discovers that, even with Nico at her side, she isn't really as safe as she thought she was.

Poor Nico just can't seem to catch a break where Wren is concerned. She gets kidnapped, beaten and almost killed on a seemingly regular basis. I'm not sure what happened to him after the last incident, but I hope the two find their way back to one another. Also, as much as I hated what his brothers and father did, I really do hope that he and Wren find a way to forgive what happened. I still think his family could be the amazing and loving family Wren has always needed and Nico has always known if they were just given the chance to make things right. They could also prove to be great allies to have when the s%&$ inevitably hits the fan again, which we all know it will.

5*s to the author of this for doing such a fantastic job of creating this world and bringing to life the characters in it. I can't wait to see what happens in the next book.

Magic and Mayhem is the second book in Annie Anderson's The Wrong Witch series and it was fantastic. Filled with magic, snark, steam, and found family. The more I read the more I love this crazy world.

My heart goes out to Ren. She has been terrorized by her family her whole life and the effects of that trauma is showing even more in this book. After everything, Ren has a hard time believing that Nico isn't going to abandon her and she's angry at first. I understand why it was hard for her to accept his love but I just wanted to yell at her to let herself be happy. Eventually, she gets there with Nico.

Nico is without a doubt totally in love with Ren. He's still calling her Little Bird and I love it. Nico is possessive and he's developed a type of obsession only a wolf shifter could have and I loved it. Nico is doing what he's been doing from the beginning, do everything possible to keep Ren safe and support her whenever she needs it. Nico doesn't get off easy Ren puts him through his paces but he takes it and they become the cutest couple.

Oh, this story had a few surprises. Just when I think that the Bannisters can get any lower they decide to dig to Hell. Something gets revealed that I didn't expect, I didn't think they could be that evil but I was wrong. Of course, they are causing all sorts of problems but they aren't the only ones. Ren's bad luck with people seemed to continue, there was a battle scene that shocked me to my core. I couldn't believe it. Ren and Nico are getting it from all angles but they have Ren's newfound friends backing them up. Ren really found a group of girls she could count on and they, along with El and Alice have become her true family.

Holy Crap! What an ending, talk about plot twist. It was complete madness. A big secret comes out and things are finally explained about Ren and her... quirks. The story has taken an unexpected turn, it's a whole new ballgame now. Magic and Mayhem was mind-blowing, now I can't wait to see how it all ends in Errors and Exorcisms, the final book in The Wrong Witch series.

I feel like it could have been better. No one tells anyone shit, Wren and Nico even barely talk thru things, the rest is just “we disagree, let’s have sex”. . It would have been nice to see Nico’s family trying to reconnect. It feels like the whole thing with Faerie and Desmond is an afterthought and an easy way to screw things up and cause strife. There would have been plenty of drama just with Nico’s family and Wren’s.

Wren and her three cabin mates all took the test and are official agents. Now we also know Wren’s family was using her amplifier powers her entire life and put some kind of curse on her. This was found when she goes with Nico to meet his family and his dad forces the family to help him slit her throat in front of Nico, let her bleed out until the curse breaks, then let him help her. Naturally, this goes over spectacularly. If his dad had just explained ANYTHING they probably could have just agreed to break the curse. But no, lets pin our son to the ground and traumatize both of them. Nico then walks out on his family saying he won’t be back until his dad agrees to make reparations. In the meantime, Nico and Wren get tricked by the father of the missing illusionist and think they’re under attack. The illusionist guy trades Wren for his daughter and Wren ends up in Faerie. After a mere day in Faerie, the queen helps her back to the human world but it has apparently been 3 years and the world has gone to absolute shit. Nico is nowhere to be found.

Just when you think that Annie Anderson has created the best book series, she outdoes herself and takes it up a notch! Wren and Nico have to be one of the steamiest book couples I have ever had the pleasure of reading!

This book picks up immediately after the first one and Wren is angry at the turns her life is taking. She has lived her entire life as the outcast of the Bannister clan, now she is being thrust into another controlling family! Nico is determined to keep her safe, but Wren is equally determined to be independent.

This book is full of unexpected twists and just when you think you know what is going to happen next....BAM!! The author throws a huge curve ball and you are sitting there wondering just what you have read! Between the action, magic, werewolves, and the steamy bedroom scenes, I felt like I was on a huge roller coaster ride.

And, I have to say that most of us have probably had a horrible experience at a family dinner, but I don't think anyone can top the storm that occurs when Wren meets Nico's family! Of course, the book ends on a cliffhanger, us loyal readers will have to wait (impatiently, I might add!) for the next installment to see what happens next.

Wren has managed to make it through ABI Boot Camp with a badge and luckily her life. Now with a new badge, a new job and apparently a new husband, everything seems to be looking up for our unlucky little heroine. But unfortunately with Wren, good things don't seem to last for long. Her family is not entirely thrilled about her being mated to a wolf and denouncing the Bannister name. Not to mention there is still this little issue of a Fae wanting her for his own. Will Wren be able to get ahold of her wonky magic enough to protect herself and the new life she is working so hard to make for herself? Or will things blow up like they always do when she is around? Read and find out.

I liked this book almost as much as I liked the first one. Wren is still her smart as a whip, loyal, stubborn self who is not afraid to hold her own, even against her smoking hot wolf, Nico. The story does seem to go from zero to sixty pretty fast in a lot of places, faster than the first in my opinion. But I still enjoyed it. I look forward to reading the next to see how Wren's story continues.

I have received a free copy of this book and am voluntarily leaving a review.
