-
A bigger mount. What a bright idea.
Built around the ultra-wide 55mm Z mount, the Z 7 allows in an abundance of light. More light means faster performance, sharper images and a thrilling selection of new lens designs.
-
Capture split second moments that matter.
Shoot stills up to 9 FPS at full resolution (12-bit RAW or JPEG).
-
Greater detail, color range and contrast.
Increased light capture means you can shoot at sensitivities as low as ISO 64 (Expandable to ISO 32).

More light gathering potential and high performance noise reduction at sensitivities as high as ISO 25,600 (Expandable to 102,400).
-
Connections? It's got a few.
Easily transfer photos and videos to your phone via Wi-Fi or Bluetooth and the Nikon SnapBridge app for your Apple or Android-powered phone. Or use your phone as a remote monitor to see what Z 7 sees.
-

*435 PDAF points in FX-based movie format with Single-Point AF.
-
Subject Tracking
Whether shooting with the EVF or the LCD screen, Auto Area AF reliably tracks and maintains the focus on a subject even when the subject briefly turns away from the camera or moves out of view.
-
Eye-Detection AF
When shooting photos, Z 7’s outstanding autofocus system can lock onto your subject’s eye and keep focus there, even when they’re in motion, for beautifully focused portraits.
-
Animal Detection AF
Capture still images when focus has been acquired on a dog or cat's eye using the Animal Detection feature (Eye/Face) in auto-area AF. When shooting video, dog and cat faces can be detected.

Product Description
More than mirrorless. Nikon mirrorless. Our vision has always been to create cameras and lenses that capture more light. More light means more detail. More speed. More possibilities. The Z7 brings that vision to life (and then some). combining the advantages of a lightweight mirrorless design, a revolutionary new full-frame lens mount and matched lenses, a Nikon designed 45.7MP image sensor and seamless integration with Nikon DSLR system-including the nikkor lenses you love-the Z7 is a camera Unlike any before it. I won't spend a lot of time comparing the Z7 to many of the camera's I have owned or still own. However, I'll name a few so that you understand I am used to shooting with high-end equipment: Hasselblad X1D, Fujifilm GFX-50S, Sony A7rii, Fujifilm X-pro 2.
Since I have only had the camera for a week, I'll mention a few things and swing back later to add more. First and foremost, I require image quality. The Z7 doesn't disappoint. It is very sharp from edge-to-edge with no edge smearing and limited vignetting (vignetting at 24mm F/4 on the Z 24-70mm S lens) and impressive dynamic range. The image stabilization seems to work well; however, I haven't run it through a battery of test. The tracking isn't that great as many of the reviews pointed out, but I really don't use that feature much. The AF is quick and very accurate. It does hunt a bit in low-light but I find it to be more than acceptable. I imagine this will get better with firmware.
The camera overall is very fast, and I love the handling. I also love the gazillion of customizable features. For example, the focus ring can be customized to change the aperture on Z mount lenses - love that. It feels great in the hand, and unlike the Sony A7 series, it doesn't suck with your eye in the viewfinder. Don't get me wrong, I love the Sony A7 series, but I hate the fact that my nose is basically crushed against the screen to get my eye fully into the viewfinder. This is very uncomfortable, especially during long shoots. The Z7 viewfinder/eyepiece extends far enough out to where you don't have this issue.
More later after I acquire the 35mm F/1.8.

More later after I acquire the 35mm F/1.8.
Since the J5 already has 21 MP resolution, I had no interest in moving up by only a few MP to the Z6, so went immediately for the 47MP Z7, figuring that even if I don't always need that much resolution, it gives me the ability to crop way down and still have a usable photograph when necessary.
The claim for the Z7 is that its new larger lens mount allows the easy development of much better lenses, with its kit zoom lens an early example. Normally, zoom lenses aren't very good wide open and at the margins of their range, but this lens is very sharp wide open and throughout its range. I also have the 50mm F1.8 lens on pre-order, for times when I need its 2.3 extra stops of light-gathering power, but haven't had any problems using the zoom for everything thus far.
Much has been made of the Z7 having only one memory card, rather than two. But since it also has the ability to immediately and automatically back up each shot as it is taken to a PC via a WiFi link, I see that concern as a complete non-issue.
There's also some concern that the battery may not last long enough. That, I'm used to from the J5. Again the cure is simple; carry 2 spares. The Z7 comes with two ways to recharge its batteries, meaning you can be charging two of them at once while not using the camera. Even when you ARE using the camera, the other charger needs only 2 hours and 35 minutes to completely recharge a drained battery.
For memory, I went with a Sony 128GB XQD card, rather than a 256GB one, primarily because a firmware update is expected to make the Z7 usable with much faster CFast memory cards in about six months. Plus, the camera assures me I still have room for 7,800 shots in both high resolution JPG and 14 bit raw format on the card I have.
If you want to see samples of my Z7 photos, I am @straz at unsplash.com. I posted 31 photos there that I took yesterday, all taken in Auto mode with no other changes, and all processed by the new Aurora HDR 2019 in its default mode, with no other changes than cropping.
As for the current shortage of alternative lenses for the Z7, no problem. I still have my J5, with its full set of lenses. By the time more Z7 lenses are available, I'll know the camera well enough to make better use of them.
My main reason for preferring the Z7 over a DSLR was size and weight. Coming from a J5, even the Z7 seems pretty big and heavy, but nothing like (for instance) Nikon's otherwise-excellent 850 DSLR. My reason for finally buying the Z7 over the Sony A7R iii I'd been expecting to buy for the past year was ergonomics, both in ease of handling and in ease of using the menu structure. (I've owned Sony cameras before, and really liked them, but never for their ergonomics.)
I'll update this review later, if I discover anything more of importance to add, but for now, I'm very happy with the Z7.
Definitely recommended.
