I love this printing of the Hobbit and Lord of the Rings collection. They are small enough to fit in my purse. The quality of binding is stunning. They are so pretty that they are a feature in my home...from the buttery leather to the warm autumnal colors...they are perfection.

I'm slightly myopic and find the font size perfectly comfortable to read. It's about the same size as a standard bible font. (And if you haven't read that one yet, sorry but LOTR pales in comparison).

What impressed me most about this set is the quality of the binding. The faux leather cover is the finest I've ever come across, and even has a similar smell as leather. Really quite amazing. As good or better than most genuine leather books I own. It's the perfect size to hold and hold open with one hand, making for an outstandingly comfortable reading experience. The only thing that's missing is a bookmark ribbon.

I was hesitant to buy this at first because I worried that the text might be too small or poorly formatted. This is not the case, and I am very happy with my purchase. I can honestly say it's one of the nicest books in my library. If only the Silmarillion were available in this format, because I found that to be a more impressive work. One can only hope.

Great books to easily carry around in your purse to read at a coffee shop or at a park somewhere. I love the texture of the book covers, it makes them fun to hold in your hand. The pages are pretty thin, not quite Bible page thin but noticeably thinner than most books you're used to. Font size is pretty small. I don't mind it but I can definitely see folks having a hard time straining if they sit reading this in long stretches.

Overall, happy with the purchase. Looks great on my bookshelf too.

I love the quality and size of these books, in my opinion all books should come in this size. The overall feel of the book is I could take it out anywhere I have extra time and comfortably digest some of Tolkien. The printing is very legible and deep in contrast to the pages so you have no struggle reading. Plus the art included looks phenomenal, no stretched images or misplaced text in my copies and I don’t think you could ask for much more!

Exceeding my expectations greatly. These are pocket editions so they are small. They fit in the palm of my hand so they cannot be any larger than 6inches probably. Like some other reviews have mentioned the print is small, but the book is small so that makes sense. The overall look and feel to the books is great, the pages are a thin and easy to turn. There are also illustrations in the book, and it came with its book holder for shelves. Literally loved everything about this set and would definitely recommend.

If you have a hard time reading small print (even with glasses) i would not get this book. The print is tiny. Like the pocket edition would suggest.

I really like this set, especially for the $30 price I paid. WARNING: the binding is not real leather and is thicker in some parts, reinforced around the rim, so the face of the book is NOT perfectly flat*, but it looks nice altogether. Infrequent black and white full-page illustrations break up the dense text, which is rather small but still perfectly readable for me. The pages are not textbook-thin, but the words are packed nearly as tightly as a pocket-sized Bible. Each book has some maps and notes at the end, but RotK is the only one with a full appendix with a guide to the lore, and glossary (probably to save space)

All the books look good, feel good especially the inlaid/relief etchings of the title on the front covers--that's not just inked on there--that has been pressed into each volume.

* = To explain, the inside jacket of THE HOBBIT is the only one with full color map of middle earth, and i can see where it has been pasted over the areas where the binding bunches up. This is not an imperfection to me, as I see the point, but its not as nice as a hardcover binding

Not going to be reviewing the actual content of the book here, just on the quality and make of the actual books themselves. First, the leather-bound case they come in is very nice. Has "J. R. R. Tolkien" engraved in the front which is a nice touch. The books themselves seem to be very well made. The books cover are not leather, but more like a silicon-type material - they have a very nice hand-feel when holding them. Print on the pages is very clear, no smudging anywhere. Book comes with maps and pictures inside which is nice.

My only complaint with the book is the font size. I will say that it's not a huge deal and I should've expected it considering the physical size of the books themselves; however, it still makes for a slightly less enjoyable read. I can't say for certain what size font is used in the book, but for my specific liking, it's a little small. I have noticed that if I read it for too long (maybe an hour so), I can feel a slight headache come on and have to take a break. I don't think this should knock this set at all because it's a personal issue, but still, worth knowing before going into it.

At the very least, this is a very nice edition of the books to add to your collection. Even if you're not going to read them, they look very nice on a bookshelf, and are well made. I bought them for about $37 I believe (think they were ~43% off when I bought them), which is a very good deal even for just a collection addition. Would recommend.

They're great, exactly what they said they'd be.
The Hobbit has some illustrations in it (which I believe are Tolkien's works).
Return of the King comes with the index and appendices, including the family trees.
All of the books include maps.

Many people have questions about the font size, which is understandable.
The font size for the Hobbit is about what it would be for mass market printings of the books. The font size for the LoTR trilogy is smaller, comparable to the size of a mini bible, but with more space between lines.
I have pretty poor eyesight and do not have any trouble reading the text at all, but I am also young, so take that into account.
While the pages are thin, they are not too thin and are not flimsy

Overall, love them! They feel and look great!

5.0 out of 5 stars Beautiful Little Set

Specifically, this is about the leatherette bound pocket-sized Special Edition, as I've noticed that some reviews overlap between different editions.

This is not a review of the story. Anyone considering buying this version either doesn't need my review of the books or should search the internet for the millions of existing reviews; it's enough for me to just say that there's a reason this is one of the most famous fantasy series of all time for good reason.

This printing/binding is exactly what I was hoping for. The books are very beautiful in a simple way. The covers are in fact floppy fake leather, not leather-covered hardbacks. They are very soft and pliable, smooth and with a nice thick and creamy paper. The font is very small but clear and bold, perfectly legible if you don't have problems reading up close. The maps are as good as they can be being so tiny, and some details are lost.

This is a set that will look great on the shelf. No gold leaf or anything to really pop out, but their small size and subdued covers that look like they could have been printed decades ago add a certain charm. The size and light weight make them perfect books to read on the go, and people will be curious about what you're reading because of how they look.

I've read both the Lord of the Rings trilogy & the Hobbit , quite some times, so purchasing the set was not just about reading but having a really good copy of this.
Still the set is really refined: Paper quality is good , the illustrations are fantastic , the binding seems firm enough and the general quality of the set is up to the expected standards for the price.
The font size is not the best but I've seen worst , and it does not become a problem after a few pages.
Together with the illustrated Silmarillion is a great addition to a Tolkien enthusiast's library.

5.0 out of 5 stars new to tolkien's books, this set is perfect
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on April 7, 2024
i've loved the lord of the rings since i was a kid so when i got to a point in my life where i was ready to read these classic stories that shaped my preferences in entertainment and media the first thing i did was look for the lord of the rings, out of all the 1 and 3 volume editions this one stood out, the ribbon bookmark, stitched binding, the art done by someone who worked on the movies and has been known to the Tolkien family, the paper is thick the books feel solid, well put together and heavy the hobbit alone must weight nearly 1lb despite being a fairly short book
when the set came to me i was looking for a set i could read and display that has good art and a ribbon bookmark and i do not think there is another set matching all of those descriptors,
the hobbit has chapter headers and drop caps for the chapters in green, with beautiful art spread throughout that makes it a pleasure to read and a treat to come across, the lord of the rings has red chapter headers and red drop caps with the same style of art spread throughout the books, the slipcase is a rigid design with room for the books to fit snug and slide out without much effort
i also learned around the time i got this wonderful set that harper collins was re printing a history of middle earth with cover art by John Howe, which while not having the art, page stock and being a reprint of difficult to get books published by christopher tolkien make an excellent shelf of tolkien with matching dust jacket and spine art, i would recommend if you want this set and want to read more tolkien, you look at the history of middle earth set thats releasing all 12 books throughout this year in 4 different sets as the art for this set and those sets look great on a shelf and are a really comprehensive tolkien collection!
