What impressed me most about this set is the quality of the binding. The faux leather cover is the finest I've ever come across, and even has a similar smell as leather. Really quite amazing. As good or better than most genuine leather books I own. It's the perfect size to hold and hold open with one hand, making for an outstandingly comfortable reading experience. The only thing that's missing is a bookmark ribbon.
I was hesitant to buy this at first because I worried that the text might be too small or poorly formatted. This is not the case, and I am very happy with my purchase. I can honestly say it's one of the nicest books in my library. If only the Silmarillion were available in this format, because I found that to be a more impressive work. One can only hope.
Overall, happy with the purchase. Looks great on my bookshelf too.
If you have a hard time reading small print (even with glasses) i would not get this book. The print is tiny. Like the pocket edition would suggest.
All the books look good, feel good especially the inlaid/relief etchings of the title on the front covers--that's not just inked on there--that has been pressed into each volume.
* = To explain, the inside jacket of THE HOBBIT is the only one with full color map of middle earth, and i can see where it has been pasted over the areas where the binding bunches up. This is not an imperfection to me, as I see the point, but its not as nice as a hardcover binding
My only complaint with the book is the font size. I will say that it's not a huge deal and I should've expected it considering the physical size of the books themselves; however, it still makes for a slightly less enjoyable read. I can't say for certain what size font is used in the book, but for my specific liking, it's a little small. I have noticed that if I read it for too long (maybe an hour so), I can feel a slight headache come on and have to take a break. I don't think this should knock this set at all because it's a personal issue, but still, worth knowing before going into it.
At the very least, this is a very nice edition of the books to add to your collection. Even if you're not going to read them, they look very nice on a bookshelf, and are well made. I bought them for about $37 I believe (think they were ~43% off when I bought them), which is a very good deal even for just a collection addition. Would recommend.

The Hobbit has some illustrations in it (which I believe are Tolkien's works).
Return of the King comes with the index and appendices, including the family trees.
All of the books include maps.
Many people have questions about the font size, which is understandable.
The font size for the Hobbit is about what it would be for mass market printings of the books. The font size for the LoTR trilogy is smaller, comparable to the size of a mini bible, but with more space between lines.
I have pretty poor eyesight and do not have any trouble reading the text at all, but I am also young, so take that into account.
While the pages are thin, they are not too thin and are not flimsy
Overall, love them! They feel and look great!

This is not a review of the story. Anyone considering buying this version either doesn't need my review of the books or should search the internet for the millions of existing reviews; it's enough for me to just say that there's a reason this is one of the most famous fantasy series of all time for good reason.
This printing/binding is exactly what I was hoping for. The books are very beautiful in a simple way. The covers are in fact floppy fake leather, not leather-covered hardbacks. They are very soft and pliable, smooth and with a nice thick and creamy paper. The font is very small but clear and bold, perfectly legible if you don't have problems reading up close. The maps are as good as they can be being so tiny, and some details are lost.
This is a set that will look great on the shelf. No gold leaf or anything to really pop out, but their small size and subdued covers that look like they could have been printed decades ago add a certain charm. The size and light weight make them perfect books to read on the go, and people will be curious about what you're reading because of how they look.
Still the set is really refined: Paper quality is good , the illustrations are fantastic , the binding seems firm enough and the general quality of the set is up to the expected standards for the price.
The font size is not the best but I've seen worst , and it does not become a problem after a few pages.
Together with the illustrated Silmarillion is a great addition to a Tolkien enthusiast's library.
when the set came to me i was looking for a set i could read and display that has good art and a ribbon bookmark and i do not think there is another set matching all of those descriptors,
the hobbit has chapter headers and drop caps for the chapters in green, with beautiful art spread throughout that makes it a pleasure to read and a treat to come across, the lord of the rings has red chapter headers and red drop caps with the same style of art spread throughout the books, the slipcase is a rigid design with room for the books to fit snug and slide out without much effort
i also learned around the time i got this wonderful set that harper collins was re printing a history of middle earth with cover art by John Howe, which while not having the art, page stock and being a reprint of difficult to get books published by christopher tolkien make an excellent shelf of tolkien with matching dust jacket and spine art, i would recommend if you want this set and want to read more tolkien, you look at the history of middle earth set thats releasing all 12 books throughout this year in 4 different sets as the art for this set and those sets look great on a shelf and are a really comprehensive tolkien collection!
