Checkmate duet series #5-6

Logan & Kayla duet

Rate this book
Logan Knight is a real-life knight in shining armor.

Brooding and mysterious, he’s the kind of guy every girl instantly notices.

Between his seductive smirk and charming good looks, it’s no wonder Kayla can’t help the way he makes her feel when she’s near him.
Too bad he’s unavailable–or so he says.

Kayla Sinclair is a saint and real-life angel.
She wears her heart on her sleeve and inspires Logan to be a better person. Rescuing dogs, feeding the homeless, volunteering at the local food pantry are just a few of the ways she gives back to others, although no one has ever been there for her. Falling for her is inevitable, but losing her will destroy him.

Logan may think he has her all figured out, but Kayla is determined to prove him wrong. This game of push and pull has her running in circles. One wrong move and they could both lose. When an unexpected tragedy strikes and Kayla forgets their relationship ever existed, Logan’s worst nightmare comes to life. He’ll do anything to remind her of the love they shared. It’ll be an uphill battle, but Logan won’t walk away without a fight.

Whoever said all is fair in love and war never played by his rules.

Checkmate.

The Logan & Kayla duet includes This is Dangerous & This is Beautiful. Suggested for mature readers only.

LOVE #TeamLayla! I'm so excited that This is Dangerous and This is Beautiful are now available in a box set! It was bittersweet to say goodbye to the Checkmate duet series, but readers are going to love Logan and Kayla's story!

This Is Dangerous Review
Even though I knew to expect some heartbreak at the end of This is Dangerous (since it's book 1 in the duet), my heart still wasn't quite prepared. Though this is the 5th book in the Checkmate series, it can be enjoyed without reading books 1-4. I do recommend it though since characters from those books appear in This is Dangerous, and the main characters, Logan and Kayla, were previously introduced as well.

Logan and Kayla's story was a slower burn than the previous books, but once it got going, I didn't want to put it down. It felt more raw and emotional, with both the hero and heroine dealing with the demons and baggage from their pasts. It was heartbreaking to see how broken and damaged they believed themselves to be and how this shaped the people they became. I think of all the Checkmate characters, Logan and Kayla feel the most real. They aren't perfect people. They have insecurities, fears, and are doing their best with their less than ideal circumstances. The slow burn friends to lovers really works in this book and I enjoyed the build up, innuendo, and angst. They have incredible chemistry and Detective Knight did not disappoint in (and out of) the bedroom. ;)

Appearances by #TeamDrewtney and #TeamTraviola helped add to the fun and there are some incredibly hilarious text messages exchanged between our characters. I'm excited for the conclusion to Logan and Kayla's story in This is Beautiful and September can't get here fast enough!

This is Beautiful Review
What a sweet conclusion to the Checkmate series! Checkmate: This is Beautiful is book 2 in Logan and Kayla's story and should only be read after Checkmate: This is Dangerous.

The book picks up right where the last one left off and your heart will hurt all over again with this painful reminder of how book 1 ended. Of all the Checkmate books, I felt like this one was the most real in it's emotions. You can easily imagine yourself in both Logan or Kayla's position and how incredibly difficult it would be to navigate. Some very interesting questions about relationships are posed and what it means to truly love someone versus a strong physical connection. Can you fall in love with the same person without the shared history and memories? Or is love enough to begin again?

I liked that there wasn't a big mystery to solve and that the focus of the story was on Logan and Kayla's relationship itself. Yes, there's a little other woman/man drama thrown in for good measure and some of the story seemed drawn out, but overall, the book answers all your lingering questions from This is Dangerous and the angst is between our hero and heroine. Toss in some sinfully sexy times (mmm..... donuts) and this made for an amazing second chance love story. Honestly, I will NEVER look at donuts the same way again!

The ending and epilogue were perfect and such a wonderful way to bring things full circle. I think Logan is now the winner of the Checkmate book boyfriends. He really was incredible and his chapters were especially touching and heartfelt. Seeing this softer and more vulnerable side to him was amazing. It's bittersweet that the series is over, but I'm glad we're not saying good bye to the Checkmate world. Courtney's brothers will be the focus of the next series titled Bishop Boys and I can't wait to see what mischief Kennedy Fox has in store for us!

Logan is my Knight in Shining Armor!!

O...M...G... I've got no words!! These ladies really know how to bring it when it comes to a cliffhanger. And well in This is Dangerous they brought it. What I will say is Kayla and Logan are just such a beautiful couple. I absolutely loved that Logan was so loving and protective with Kayla from the beginning. Even though he fought his feelings towards her, you can see that he was in love with everything that was Kayla. You just want to eat him up like a delicious doughnut. I've said this once and I'll say it again: how is it possible for these ladies to make me fall in love with yet another stellar couple!

My emotions are all over the place after reading This is Beautiful. On one hand I was so happy with how Logan's and Kayla's story ended. They proved that no matter what obstacles they encountered, the love they had for each other was stronger. Logan Knight is definitely a Knight in Shining Armor and let's not forget to mention he's absolutely hot. On the other hand, I'm so sad the duet series is over. I've absolutely love every single character in the Checkmate series. I can't wait to see what else is to come from future projects. TeamLayla TeamCheckmate.

Donuts and Knight are the best!
I have officially survived the checkmate duet series. I enjoyed reading this book so much. I've been wanting to know about Kayla and Logan since their appearance in the previous duets. This is really an amazing second chance story. Logan Knight really did live up to the knight in shining armor. Regardless of what Kayla went through, she never let it push her down and she was still the giving person she always as been. #TeamLayla

This was by far my favorite of the Checkmate Duet series. Logan and Kayla’s story was the perfect slow burn and really reminded me why I love Kennedy Fox so much. This set would be perfect to read anytime, but particularly for this holiday season. Trust me - you’ll love it.

Loved it!

Its been a few weeks since I read this book, but I do remember liking it the best out of all the series. I like the fact that Kayla is the one who initially is in love with Logan, but because of his past Logan doesn't feel like he can offer her what she deserves. When we find out what that past is and how Kayla handles it, it isn't as bad as Logan thinks it was going to be.

I love how Kayla is such a giving and caring person, but then something tragic happens and the roles are reversed and then Logan realizes how Kayla has felt all this time a part of me somehow feels a little bit satisfied by it. I think that's why this story was my favorite.

This Is Dangerous

The start of this story was one where best friends become lovers which makes you fall in love this book than tragedy hits them in the end.

This Is Beautiful

Oh So Beautuful

Kayla and Logan's story was just as beautiful and sweet as the first two. Even though this starts off where we left off in the first one, it truly ends in a HEA. I really enjoyed this and got a little frustrated at times but got over it quickly. Kennedy really had a knack to really grab you were it counts, your heart.

Dangerous:

"'So you're going to be a dog-lady who adopts dogs and name them after Disney Prince's?' His brow arches as his lips curve into a knowing grin. Shrugging, I respond, 'Might as well, At least I know they won't leave, cheat, or break my heart.'"

This is the fifth book in the Checkmate Duet Series. This is Dangerous centers around Kayla and Logan, who are both introduced in the previous books. Kayla, Viola's college roommate, introduced in This is War, is a good-doer. With a dark past no one knows about, she decided to make her adult life a happier part of her early 20's. She is introduced to Logan, Drew, Viola's big brother's partner. Drew and Logan are police officers until Logan is promoted to Detective.

Kayla has had it bad for Logan since the day they met, but Logan has always been standoffish, saying he was unavailable, but she doesn't give in to that. She tried to break down his walls, knowing he is hiding something. What she doesn't know is he actually feels the same way about her, but he is afraid because of his dark past.

"I'm on my last ounce of willpower to control myself around her. Pushing her away will be nearly impossible this time if she looks a me the way she has been-- like she's waiting for me."

This book tore me apart! I completely fell in love with Kayla and Logan. As much as I love all the main characters in the Checkmate Duet Series, Kayla and Logan took the cake. I feel the storyline has much more developed. The drama is still there but it isn't the college drama type like in the previous books. Logan and Kayla both has serious pasts and it plays into real life, there are people out there that can relate to these characters.

"I want you. I want it fast. Slow. Hard. Bent over. Against the wall. I want it all night long. In the morning. In the shower and the kitchen. I want you to break me, Logan. I've never wanted anyone else as badly as I want you."

Watching Logan open his walls, letting Kayla break them down more and more, watching their relationship bloom was amazing. In the previous books, Logan and Kayla are very closed off characters. You know something is up but you never know what. We finally get under their skin and learn the truth. I was so enthralled, nothing could distract me from Kayla and Logan.

The sex in this book was HOT! I am not going to lie, once Logan let all the pieces fall, it was freaking HOT! It reminded me of myself and my husband so bad because we are just like Logan and Kayla in that aspect. I can relate to Kayla in her sexual preferences, she is a little freak in the sheets, likes it every way, every where, every which way! It really excited me! I loved it honestly. And trust me when I say, you won't look at a glazed donut the same after this!

"Smiling I fist her hair and pull her head back until my mouth reaches her ear. 'That was the hottest fucking thing I've ever seen.'"

The ending KILLED me, just as it did everyone else, KF Instafam when CRAZY! Kennedy Fox is notorious for cliffhangers but PLEASE don't let that deter you from reading this book. It is the first book in a duet, it is going to end in a cliffhanger, just like any other book in a series, they all leave you hanging on the edge of the cliff, they have to or what's the point of reading the second book. Any good book in a series has to leave you wanting more, and this book seriously does just that. I love these books! Kennedy Fox has a way of captivating you, mind, body and soul, sucking you into their stories.

5 EPIC FOXES! #TeamLayla

Beautiful:

My mind may not remember, but my heart does."

I cried like a baby at the end. I am so sad to see this series come to an end! But all good things must come to an end, right?

This book opened up and swallowed me whole. I freaking couldn't stop reading at times, though I had to. My heart hurt for Logan, he fell so hard for Kayla, she is everything to him. But because of her condition, it was heart-wrenching watching Logan break to pieces.

I just love everything about Logan. He is sweet and caring, he is a big teddy bear! In the previous books, he was always so mysterious, but honestly, he is just the man I had been imaging. They both have rough pasts, two broken souls who heal each other slowly, and not knowing it at first!

"'That's Skylar. Logan's daughter and his parents. Logan. Oh my God," I repeat, almost dropping to my knees when the memories rushed back. Blinking repeatedly, I cover my mouth with my hands and hold back tears.
'Kayla, what is it?' Viola asks in a panic.
'I remember,' I tell them. 'I remember everything.'"

Logan and Kayla are very different from the previous couples. They have past that aren't the best but somehow, they push through it and find their way to each other. They are perfect together because they understand the pain.

I am saddened to see this series come to an end. I adored Logan and Kayla, I adore this whole flipping series. I want more from these characters, but the have had time in the spotlight, now the time is coming for the BISHOP BROTHERS! I couldn't be more excited!

If you haven't guessed already, 5 foxy stars! And 5 all around foxy stars for this entire series!

I love you Checkmate!

The perfect conclusion to one of the most addictive and highly entertaining series ever! Kayla and Logan's love story will have you hooked from the first page to the last. This boxed duet is a definite must read that shouldn't be missed!

This Dangerous Review:

Yet again Kennedy Fox has completely blown me away with the next installment of the highly addictive Checkmate series. This talented writing duo never seizes to amaze me with their lovable cast of characters and riveting storylines. Just when I thought I couldn't love this series enough, this book has once again solidified my love for this series.

Logan and Kayla's love story was so heartfelt and compelling that I couldn't get enough of these two characters. There was something about their story that felt much more deeper than the previous books in this series. Having read the previous books, I was always curious about these characters especially Logan. He was such a mysterious and guarded character that I couldn't help in being drawn to him. In this book, we're given a better understanding and insight into Logan's life and the secrets he kept so guarded. So many things about his character were finally revealed that I had a hard time putting this book down.

One of the things that I loved about his character was his unwavering protectiveness and strength. He's undoubtedly the knight an shining armor that you would want to have by your side. In addition, this book also gives light to the aspects of Logan's life that I never would've imagined. As a result, it made his character even more endearing and heartbreaking. My heart definitely went out to Logan many times during this book. Furthermore, I loved the dynamic and undeniable chemistry between Logan and Kayla. Unlike the other books in the series, this story was more of a slow burn romance. I must admit that like Kayla, I was a bit frustrated with the back and forth with Logan. Even though I can understand his reasons for not wanting a relationship, I had hoped that he would overcome his fears and realize what he was missing out on by resisting his feelings for Kayla. But the building anticipation of these two characters finally getting together was definitely worth the wait.

Overall, this book had everything that I love from a Kennedy Fox romance and much more. I cannot recommend this book enough! This is Dangerous is a second chance romance that will tug on your heart strings and captivate you from beginning to end. It's a highly entertaining romance that will have you begging for more. This is one love story that shouldn't be missed!

This is Beautiful Review:

I can't believe that it's REALLY over! Not only is it the conclusion of Logan and Kayla's heartbreaking love story, it's the end of one of the most highly addictive series that I've read. I fell in love with these lovable characters and their stories from the very first Checkmate duet. Even though it's bittersweet to say goodbye to these characters, I felt that This is Beautiful was the perfect ending to this unforgettable series. Just when I thought I couldn't love this series enough, this book proves once again why I love Kennedy Fox books! This amazing writing duo never seizes to amaze me with their flawless writing and colorful cast of characters. The Kennedy Fox duo are such talented storytellers whose books keep getting better and better. It's hard for me to pick a favorite because I love them all. But I feel that these books have something that every reader can enjoy and relate to.
In this book, the story picks up right after the major cliffhanger in This is Dangerous. Eventually we find out that the accident in the last book had caused Kayla to lose her memory of the last two years. Thus forgetting her relationship with Logan. Now it's up to Logan to help Kayla regain the memories and life that they had once shared. Not mention the unanswered questions and events from the last book are finally answered. One of things that I loved most about this book was in not knowing what would happen next. There were so many moments throughout the book that I thought I knew or understood what was going to happen. But only to be taken by surprise by things I definitely didn't expect. Furthermore this book was quite an emotional rollercoaster from beginning to end. Logan and Kayla's journey was so compelling and heartfelt that I didn't want their story to end.
This is Beautiful encompassed everything I love about these authors' books. My heart truly went out for these characters whose stories have captivated and entertained me from the very beginning. I cannot recommend this series enough! It's a definite must read series that will have you hooked from the first page to the last!

Best series of the year! #LaylaForever

Forget everything I have said before this in regards to this series. Logan Knight has completely won me over. He's sexy, he's an amazing father, he's a cop, and he's good with animals. Honestly, what more could I ask for in a fictional character? I finally found a guy who loves dogs and donuts almost as much as I do!
But really, I am in love with this series. The more I read about these characters, the more fall in love with them. Kennedy Fox writes stories that make you laugh one minute and leave you dumbfounded the next. I expected a cliffhanger due to the fact that each couple in this book is a duet. HOWEVER- the authors left me completely in shock when I saw the way this book ends. Oh My God. I don't know if I should call Kennedy Fox a genius or a life ruiner. Honestly? It's more of the latter. Logan and Kayla were absolutely perfect. I love their banter, their silly flirting and their love for one another. This is Dangerous is a sweet & sexy second chance romance that will change the way you look at donuts. Forever.

This Is Beautiful was one of my 2017 most anticipated reads. I started the series a couple of months ago and I can't believe it has come to an end already. This series has put me through such a huge roller-coaster- and honestly, I never really wanted to get off. I identified with the characters and I fell in love with their charm, their sarcasm, their quirkiness and their constant inappropriateness. This Is Beautiful was a breathtaking end to a marvelous series. It keeps you on the edge of your seat wondering what's going to happen next? Will all our questions be answered? Will Logan end up adopting every dog Kayla pitches him? Will somebody one day wake me up with a box of donuts? In all seriousness, This Is Beautiful was worth the wait and knowing the series is over is extremely bittersweet. On one hand, we won't be getting anymore books from these amazing characters we have grown to love but on the other, I am so excited to see what else Kennedy Fox has up their sleeve in this upcoming year. Count me in for their next book!

This Is Effortless:

Again this book knocked it out of the park. I was WAY on the boat of HAVE FAITH that we will get a HEA for Drew and Courtney and I am so glad I stuck with it.

Also, Shovel? Deep Hole? MIA? Can we just make that happen?

But really, this was a novel about two people really falling in love and I enjoyed ever second of it. Drew was perfection in this. He was everything that I wanted in a character and took all his traits from book one and delivered twice over.

Courtney was the GIRL. Guys, she was strong and smart and just I loved her personality. I related to her and I feel like that made me ship these two even more.  Really, though. Strong is the word for her. She persevered and was trusting and just Yes.

IF you are still reading, which is a big If, than you need to know this novel is beautiful and full os the humor and angst that you know you will get with this duo.

This Is Dangerous:

I am not ready for this one. Nope. Broody Logan and KAYLA.

BUT I KNEW IT WAS GOING TO DO THIS TO ME.

I knew it was going to be a cliffhanger to make me cringe and even though I have the next book, It still is everything.

This novel had just enough push and pull for me. I love when characters don't truly realize their feelings off the bat. I love the burn if it. The better side of that? When they both feel the same.

But alas, things aren't that easy and these two just can't seem to get it together. I need the next read and frankly writing this out before I read that to save from spilling spoilers is hard because I am Dying to know what happens next.

Will Logan FINALLY spill the beans? Will Kayla just REALLY GO FOR IT? UGH JUST Give me my Hea.  Trust me. You want the answer to all of those questions.

Just as I predicted, Logan and Kayla are now my FAVORITE Kennedy Fox couple. Kennedy Fox basically put everything I like to read in this book. We FINALLY find out who Skylar is. I guessed right and I was SO HAPPY I was. There was so many CUTE and SEXY moments. I'll never look at a doughnut the same way again or see one and NOT think about this book.

This is Beautiful is by far my FAVORITE Checkmate book with my FAVORITE couple. And I LOVED all of the other couples and their books. It also had the most emotional filled moments. I couldn't seem to stop crying at times. I have to say that this series has wrapped up in a pretty purple bow. I do wish the epilogue featured a certain couple since it was THE LAST book.

I'm DEVASTATED that this series is now over, but at least we have the Bishop Brothers!! Hopefully Courtney or someone else will make an appearance. ;)

Great Series

This series has really grown on me. The first couple in the series, Travis and Viola, got on my nerves Brittney played so many games with each other, I thought they were immature. I loved Kayla and Logan but there was a plot twist that I HATE in romance novels, and to be honest, if I had known the plot would veer in this direction I probably wouldn't have bought the book. It was still a good book. The sexy energy between The two was combustible and I loved how Kayla slowly dissolved all of the walls bulky around Logan's heart. I also like how the couples from the previous books are still involved in the story. All in all, a great series

I can't even describe how much I was looking forward to Logan & Kayla's story. From the onset of their attraction in previous books, I was cheering them on. To see them finally together and get their own story was breathtaking. And what a story it was! The suspense was prevalent but didn't deter from the romance. Kudos to these authors! I'm so sad that I've already read the Bishop brothers before these duets, however I'm thinking a reread is in order!

This duo have done it again

They way this duo write so amazingly together is truly beautiful. I've loved this whole series.

Kayla and Logan certainly had their own troubles to conquer, but did so so amazingly together. I nearly lost it though when I thought Logan went back to Maggie.

Keep up the good work ladies!

Review: This is Dangerous: 4 Stars:

I loved the start to Logan and Kayla’s story. This is Dangerous kept me glued to my device from start to finish and left me craving (shouting) for more!

Kayla is a sweet, caring and compassionate woman with a heart of gold. She loves animals and wants to do anything that she can to ensure they feel loved and protected. I share her love of animals and I studied Animal Welfare in college and worked in a Veterinary Hospital, so I really connected to her character.

Logan is a bit mysterious and guarded. He keeps Kayla a safe distance away and as the story unfolds we learn a few reasons why he feels as though Kayla should be with someone other than him. But no matter how hard he tries to fight it, the pull towards her is too strong. He cares for Kayla, he wants to be there for her and to protect her, and once he gives into his desires, the chemistry they create is explosive! HOT!

But just when you think these two lovers could finally be on the good path to happiness, Kennedy Fox blows those hopes and happy thoughts up with the cliff-hanger! Find out exactly what’s in store for Logan and Kayla in Part Two, This is Beautiful.

Review: This is Beautiful: 4 Stars:

This is Beautiful is the conclusion to Logan and Kayla’s story. It’s a quick read with a few cute and sexy moments, plus some entertaining and fun times, compliments of the beloved secondary characters who make a few memorable appearances.

In This is Dangerous, I adored Logan and Kayla together. Logan had been trying his best to stay away from Kayla, but eventually the pull was too strong. Their chemistry was real and hot, and the love that grew between them shone brightly.

With This is Beautiful, I suppose you could say that it didn’t evoke the emotional responses within me that I was hoping for or had expected. For me, the element of surprise was missing, and it didn’t give me ‘all the feels.’ I wasn’t ‘shipping’ #Layla so hard this time. BUT …

While I felt disconnected at times when it came to the couple, I had all the love for Logan himself. He had finally found someone to love endlessly, and that happiness was quickly snatched away. He vowed to fight to win Kayla’s heart back, just like she had fought for him the first time around. He remained the sweet, swoony, kind and patient man we had come to know, and I loved how he didn’t push Kayla beyond her comfort zone, ever. He was a great lead character, and I just wanted him to be happy, whatever that meant for him in the end.

As I flipped the final page of This is Beautiful, I felt content. Satisfied with the conclusion to a great series. If you’re in the mood for a second-chance romance with a hero that will make you smile and sigh dreamily, #Layla’s duet is a good choice! Plus, dogs and donuts, who doesn’t smile about that!?
