Editorial Reviews

Review

“An unusually raw and revealing exploration of how our leadership journeys are shaped by the defining moments of our childhood...” — Adam Grant

“If you want to be a better leader, or a better person, or both, read this book. A beautifully written, achingly honest account of why you can’t grow a business without growing yourself.” — Angela Duckworth

“This book is filled with honesty, vulnerability, and insight. This book teaches us to be brave and pursue radical self-inquiry in an effort to get to know ourselves, to be truthful with ourselves, and to love ourselves. In this pursuit Jerry shines a light on a path that defines a healthier sense of what it means to be a leader. There are countless books offering various ways to become a better leader in the business world. But this is the only book with the insight and wisdom to offer a unique perspective: to be a better leader requires us to be a better human.”  — Bijan Sabet

“Reboot is a tour de force – brilliant, brave and deeply emotionally resonant. It will inspire those who may sorely need, but don’t seek help, to act. Reboot is powerful, penetrating and psychologically masterful. It’s a gift.” — Dr. Rory Rothman

Strong Back, Open Heart

Strong Back, Open Heart
Most leadership books are written to build you up, boost your confidence and tell you that ultimately, you're the master of the Universe. Just follow these 7 easy steps, change your habits in four days, take my exclusive personality test... Authors of such things promise a quick path to riches and success. Be damned those who stand in your way. Jerry Colonna is not one of these authors. His book, Reboot: Leadership and the Art of Growing Up, is an invitation. It's an invitation to discover yourself by entering into the deep exploration of what Jerry calls "radical self-inquiry." This invitation asks the reader to simply discover who they are as a person, and who they are as a leader, by going through the heart opening process of peeling back the layers and masks we've accumulated over the years to protect ourselves from pain and suffering. What's this have to do with leadership? Jerry has found by working with dozens and dozens of clients in his coaching practice (some of which are the world's leading CEOs), and more importantly, examining his own life, that the way we as leaders react to situations are often shaped by our need to protect ourselves. We still lean on things that kept us safe in childhood, and in ways we're blind to, they continue to creep into our decision making even now. He calls this the "long black bag" we drag behind us as we navigate our way through life. He invites us to shed all of that and become the adult, the leader, we are all capable of becoming. His contention is this: great human beings make great leaders. This book is for those who seek to become great human beings. Kind, authentic, awakened. Perfect in our imperfections. In doing so, you will naturally become a great leader. You will become, as Jerry puts it, a "broken-open-hearted warrior."

Have you ever you come across a book that provides just the spiritual nourishment you were craving at the moment you needed it? To me, this is that book. I cannot express my gratitude to him to have written it. Jerry is an old friend and former colleague so I have a little personal experience with the magical insight he brings to his work as well as the forces that plagued him at the peak of his career in finance. He was always more honest about this than anyone I’ve ever met. And one of his gifts is recognizing these conflicts in other leaders, and showing them, through gentle but firm inquiry, how their patterns may be replaying in their leadership relationships, and what work it takes to resolve them with honesty and integrity. In this hugely readable book, he opens up even more to show the incredible path he’s been on to reconcile his childhood demons and through reading, retreats, therapy, and writing, find ways to break open his heart and become a warrior of radical self-inquiry. I’ve spent the last few years on my own self-inquiry journey, wrestling with similar issues and lightly dipping into some of the touchstones he discovered, along with a few others (Salzburg, Rohr, Katie). I felt like this book, more than any I’ve read lately, helped bring various strands of the inquiry together into sharp focus. He includes questions at the end of each chapter, and I started journaling with them after the first 10 pages. I’ve also worked with hundreds of entrepreneurs, and agree with Jerry that people in that role often discover patterns that once drove them and helped them succeed may not work forever. This book helps you see those patterns in others, and then in yourself, through easy to understand analogies-the Crow, the Lone Warrior, and others.

Jerry is a master coach and teacher, and you can literally use this book to benefit from his coaching, to explore what is holding you back, and to start to disentangle what it means for you to be a better leader, and more importantly, a better human. Or you can just enjoy the ride of wonderful writing and insight that knit together the personal with the pressures of modern entrepreneurial leadership. Either way, this book is a gem.

I've been waiting patiently for this book to arrive. I had high expectations and it did not disappoint!
I've been a big fan of Jerry Colonna for several years - listening to his podcast religiously and attending his boot camp earlier this year.

I think the book does an amazing job of distilling down the key content and techniques of Jerry's message and process into something that is easily digestible by the average leader with little time on his or her hands.

I particularly liked the chapter on the Illogical Other. I am quite familiar with this topic based on several different sources. I thought Jerry's take on explaining it and the importance of understanding it was really good. The chapter also explains that we too are at times illogical to all the others we interact with. It is a fascinating concept and I think it explains a lot of the strife in this world. It is certainly a good lesson to learn as a leader!

Jerry does a masterful job weaving his own life story into the key themes of the book. It is a great read. Very informative, insightful, and entertaining, all at the same time. I loved it!

I am buying a bunch of copies of this book and distributing to friends and co-workers who are all developing on their own path as leaders. This book is the next chapter on Jerry's amazing ability to positively influence people in a very loving and genuine way.

In my mind, working with a good leadership coach such as Colonna is like having surgery for a non-life threatening ailment, like a bad knee: you can pass the days without the procedure, but in order to truly get better, you need to go through one monster dose of pain and maintenance therapy afterwards.

And I think this is what Colonna does best: he helps heal, but probably in a way that requires working through pain. Colonna is known in startup circles as a leadership coach, walking alongside entrepreneurs and investors, helping them explore behaviors and patterns that cause pain, ultimately enabling leaders to be better humans. The introspection needed to get there is at times quite challenging - but necessary.

The book uses examples from Colonna's work with (sometimes well-known, at times anonymous) clients to bring this lesson to life. Nothing quite matches his descriptions of his own journey to get to the authentic self - raw, heartbreaking.

A word of caution, however: Colonna has a very particular style that combines elements of Buddhism, therapy and "annoying enigmatic" assertions (to bastardize a quote from the book) that you rarely see from business leaders and that may be less appealing to some. Before you invest in this book, check out one of Jerry's talks to see if you'd like more (e.g. Startup Podcast "Shadowed Qualities" episode). I also found the non-linear writing to be confusing at times - jumping in between snippets of Colonna's childhood to present-day CEO offices to exotic locales, occasionally without a clear thread tying these moments together.

In all, Reboot is certainly a recommended read for those looking for an introspective leadership book. I have no doubt working with Colonna directly would be more impactful - I was touched when finishing the book, didn't quite feel toppled - but Reboot shines a welcome light on areas to explore on my own as well as a fascinating look at an almost-elder's own exploration.

5.0 out of 5 stars For the poet in every leader
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on May 10, 2021
My coach recommended this book to me, and it took me a while to get around to it. I could say that I should have got to it sooner - but that would be to miss the point of this book I think. I can’t say it’s an explicit message but my reflection on this extraordinary invitation to radically inquire within yourself is that each rise and fall in the rollercoaster in life is an opportunity to learn and grow - as and when we choose to embrace it. If poetry is about seeing what is right in front of us with new eyes, then this book is indeed for the poet in each and every one of us.

This book is honest, real, and thought-provoking. Low on platitudes and high on real-life discovery of what is most important in business...and in life. By sharing himself, Jerry touches on the universal path we all must walk to grow up and to lead. Universal, yet completely personal. At some points, we must all walk alone. Reboot is a great companion for the journey!
