Product Description
New optics to join the Laowa Zero-D range, for near-zero distortion. Built all in Aluminium, its very moderate weight and reduced footprint go hand in hand with the format of a hybrid case for both photo and video use (easy balancing on a stabilization system). Its construction incorporates 2 aspherical lenses as well as 3 ED glass lenses to limit the appearance of chromatic aberrations and maintain maximum detail. The front lens has a hydrophobic treatment to prevent water splashes during shooting. A thread also makes it possible to use 49mm dia-meter filters to protect the lens, to add a polarizer or a neutral gray appreciated in landscape photo. Technical features - APS-C ultra-wide-angle optics for hybrid - 113 degrees of field angle - Durable all-aluminum construction - Compact and lightweight: perfect fit with a hybrid camera in photo or video on stabilizer - Includes 2 aspherical lenses + 3 ultra-low dispersion glass lenses to reduce chromatic aberrations - Close distortion from zero - Trah hydrophobic frontal lens

Customer Reviews, including Product Star Ratings help customers to learn more about the product and decide whether it is the right product for them.
To calculate the overall star rating and percentage breakdown by star, we don’t use a simple average. Instead, our system considers things like how recent a review is and if the reviewer bought the item on Amazon. It also analyzed reviews to verify trustworthiness.

UPDATE: I ordered a replacement lens and it is certainly better than the first. I've upped my original two star rating to a four with the caveat that you need to take a close look at the lens sharpness to ensure you didn't get a "dud" like I did on the first copy.
It does have noticeably vignetting at aperture's under f5.6, but that's a trade off I'm willing to live with in exchange for super sharp images with perfectly straight lines.
It does have noticeably vignetting at aperture's under f5.6, but that's a trade off I'm willing to live with in exchange for super sharp images with perfectly straight lines.
Unfortunately, the particular copy I got is so difficult to mount onto the camera that I am afraid there's something wrong with the lens mount. If so I am concerned it might ultimately damage the camera. Or perhaps the amount of force I have to use will eventually damage the lens. Or both.
The non-weather-sealed Fuji XF lenses bayonet onto the camera very easily. The Laowa is not weather-sealed and should not require much force to attach to the camera. With regret I must send it back.
It would be unfair to Laowa to leave it at that. So:
I did shoot with it a few times, enough to know that the build quality is excellent. Both focusing ring and aperture operate very nicely, and kudos to Laowa for the "clicked" aperture ring. My impression of sharpness is that when I nailed the focus correctly, sharpness is good. (All YouTube reviews I have seen so far give this 9mm lens high marks for optical performance.)
So overall I think it is a high quality lens and a unique one considering the size and maximum aperture. It's just that this particular copy has not worked out. Just the luck of the draw, I guess.
One thing that seems to be a "given" with lenses of this type: There is a very short throw between fairly close focusing and infinity. Even though you can often rely on a hyperfocal distance approach with the appropriate aperture, if you need to nail focus exactly it's going to take some practice. Fujifilm cameras' ways of magnifying the image temporarily during manual focusing will become your good friends (for example, certain cameras' dual display features).
I had to return it and pay twice as much for the Fuji 8mm, but that lens is exceptional. I've been pleased with my Laowa 65mm macro, so I'm quite disappointed in this lens.
