Maximum MojoDesigning MOJOMOJO OVERDRIVE was both very simple and very complex. We knew what we wanted from the start: A pedal that sounds like an amp, with a very open character and little compression allowing even the most subtle of your playing to shine through. We basically set out to capture lightning in a bottle with a clarity that even allowed for complex chords to stand out – did we succeed? Well, plug it in, play one lick, look us in the eye and try to tell us we didn’t! • Increased circuit board voltage for extra headroom • Precise tone controls • Voicing switch |
Joltin’ the JuiceOne of the reasons why we’ve achieved such a dynamic pedal is the fact that we use a special circuit that ramps up the voltage to more than 3 - 4 times the amount of your typical drive pedals. However, we don’t use this added gain to squeeze more overdrive/distortion out of the pedal, but to dramatically increase the headroom and dynamics. The result? The most alive overdrive you have ever heard and a pedal that defines all that is magic about overdriven sounds. |
Directing DistortionMOJOMOJO is a very musical pedal, but it needs direction. It’ll be up to you to integrate it into your gear via the tone controls. Luckily, MOJOMOJO sounds great right off the bat and dialing in what you want, from added punch or body to added beef on your leads, is fun and easy. |
Get HeardIn essence, an overdrive is something you get from a fully cranked tube amp working hard. Simple, but so dastardly hard to capture. MOJOMOJO actually succeeded doing this in the most natural and musical of ways and is in fact so ‘fat sounding’ we added a voicing switch for backing off the bass a bit when used with dark sounding guitars. |

The Mojomojo sounds great with all of my guitars. I run the gain anywhere from 9-noon and I'm very happy with the sounds I get for both lead and rhythm - with various pickups, also, meaning I can get it set up so that it's not too dark to do chords on a neck pickup while not being overly bright or harsh when switching to the bridge. There's a lot more gain on tap than I use.
One last thing - having two tone controls is SO helpful, and really makes this pedal much more versatile than a single-tone-knob OD. The voicing is more open than a Tubescreamer-style pedal. There isn't a pronounced midrange hump, it's not overly dark or bassy, and to my ear it sounds pretty neutral with the tone controls at noon. The tone controls boost or cut from noon, by the way. The voice switch will give you a little more bass in one setting, but I don't find this necessary. It's also subtle, but I can see where it would be useful if you wanted a bit more girth on a bridge pickup. More drive pedals need to have multi-band EQ - it makes such a huge difference in the versatility of the pedal, and I can't imagine this sounding bad through any amp. I sometimes use it through a slightly dirty amp, sometimes a clean amp, and either way it's great.
Also - this thing is an absolute STEAL at $50. This is destined to be the new Bad Monkey (a great, cheap OD pedal that's now not so cheap), but much better than the Bad Monkey - just better tone overall and more versatile, in my opinion.
As far as build quality goes, I haven't had it for very long, but the chassis is a gorgeous metallic brown (reminds me of an '89 caprice classic I had), and all the pieces feel well machined. the knobs are all solid feeling, with some resistance on the pots, so they don't feel spongy or loose or anything. Its also a relatively small pedal, much shallower than my boss or my wampler sitting on either side of it, but not so short patch cables are binding or anything. The red LED is also very nice if perhaps a little blinding.
For reference, I was playing a LP style guitar, with PAF style humbuckers, running through a Wampler Ego comp., into a '65 deluxe reissue with Jensen blue speaker.
*I went to my amp immediately after writing this review and plugged my Ibanez rg into the signal chain. Using the same amp and signal chain, I focused entirely on pickup settings 2,3,and 4, which on my instrument are all the single coil settings. I should also say that the pickups in this instrument are generally very hot, its a high output, ceramic magnet, passive pickup setup. The mojomojo handled it very well though without too much grit. Quite a bit of drive was needed to really distort the middle single coil, and it sounded good on all of the other settings as well.
This pedal is definitely earning a permanent spot on my board, and at right around 50 bucks... this is a hell of a steal.
Bottom line, it sounds good to my ears and it may sound good to yours as well. In a day and age when simple overdrive pedals can cost crazy amounts all on their own, a quality built pedal that is versatile at 50 dollars new isn't seen often at all. Even if you bought it and hated it, at this price point, its definitely worth a try.
