Tamron 17-28 mm F/2.8 Di III RXD for Sony full-frame mirrorless
This lens gives live to a new range of creative choices.
Where large aperture (F/2.8) meets small filter size (ø67mm)
Step out of the normal lens zone and into the wilds of wide-angle
A lens as luminous as your creative vision
Large aperture F/2.8 ultra wide-angle zoom lens for full-frame mirrorless
Step out of the normal lens zone and into the wilds of wide-angle. The 17-28mm F/2.8 Di III RXD (Model A046) is a large aperture ultra wide-angle zoom lens for Sony E-mount that was designed exclusively for mirrorless cameras and provides unrivalled portability and superb image quality. It’s the smallest and lightest weight zoom lens in its class. The dramatic 17-28mm zoom range adds new dimensions to photographing landscapes, cityscapes, mountains and scenic vistas—as well as groups and building interiors.
Despite its compact size, it offers outstanding optical performance. Strategically deployed LD (Low Dispersion) and XLD (eXtra Low Dispersion) lens elements thoroughly suppress chromatic aberration. The combination of ultra wide-angle focal length and an MOD (Minimum Object Distance) of 0.19m (7.5 in) at the wide-angle end encourages richly expressive and creative photography.
The new 17-28mm zoom’s AF drive system is powered by the RXD (Rapid eXtra-silent stepping Drive) stepping motor unit that enables it to deliver high-speed, high-precision operation. In addition, the new zoom lens features Moisture-Resistant Construction and a hydrophobic Fluorine Coating that repels fingerprints and dirt. This compact but powerful tool will boost your mobility.
This new lens is compatible with many of the advanced features that are specific to mirrorless cameras. This includes:
- Fast Hybrid AF; High performance autofocus system means you'll own every shooting opportunity
- Eye AF
- Direct Manual Focus (DMF)
- In-camera lens correction (shading, chromatic aberration, distortion)
- Camera-based lens unit firmware updates
- * Features vary by camera. Please consult your camera’s instruction manual for details.
- *As of May, 2019
Compact size you can take anywhere—and everywhere
Tamron makes large aperture ultra wide-angle photography more exciting, and for this lens we focused on usability. The 17-28mm zoom range was carefully selected; that paved the way for a surprisingly small size—just 99mm (3.9 in) long, weighing but 420g (14.8 oz). The overall length of the lens does not change during zooming, thereby offering consistent handling and stable shooting operations. (ref. animation for zooming) In addition, the Φ67mm filter size is small for a large aperture ultra wide-angle zoom lens. Plus, it shares the same filter diameter as the high-speed standard zoom lens in the series, the 28-75mm F/2.8 Di III RXD (Model A036). This means the same filters such as PL (Polarizer), lens caps and other accessories may be used for both models.
Beautifully capture every scene and vista
The 17-28mm zoom provides magnificent image quality without compromise despite its compactness. Two LD lens elements and one XLD element (which has properties close to fluorite) are precisely located to quash chromatic and other aberrations. In addition, the BBAR (Broad-Band Anti-Reflection) Coating applied to lens surfaces reduces ghosting and flare that are otherwise likely to occur when shooting against the sunset’s glow and other backlit situations. Leveraging camera functions*, it provides excellent optical performance matching the latest high resolution image sensors from edge-to-edge throughout the entire zoom range. The 17-28mm zoom invites you into the breathtaking world of ultra wide-angle photography.
* When shooting with the camera’s lens correction function enabled.
Superior close-up shooting performance empowers creativity
The 17-28mm zoom features an MOD of 0.19m (7.5 in) at the wide 17mm end, rendering a maximum magnification ratio of 1:5.2. At the tele end, the MOD is 0.26m (10.2 in) and the maximum magnification ratio is 1:6. In short, you can easily get close enough for a powerful shot. Your images can emphasize the perspective unique to ultra wide-angle lenses, and you can produce soft expressions with a shallow depth of field distinctive to large aperture lenses by opening the aperture and getting close to the subject. Versatile, functional and sensational—all at the same time.

Product Description
The Tamron 17-28mm f/2.8 DI III RXD (model A046) lens is designed for Sony full-frame mirrorless cameras and achieves all of the benefits of a fast f/2.8 aperture in an ultra wide-angle zoom lens. It has an amazingly compact and lightweight design, weighing just 420G and having an overall length of just 99mm. The compact size provides excellent balance and is easy to carry, especially with no barrel extension whilst focusing or zooming, making it great for travelling. The 17-28mm RXD offers a large f/2.8 aperture throughout the entire zoom range and delivers edge-to-edge high-resolution and contrast. The combination of ultra wide-angle focal length, large constant f/2.8 aperture and a minimum object distance (MOD) of 19cm (at the wide-angle end), encourages richly expressive and creative photography in a multitude of scenarios. The 17-28mm Zoom’s AF drive system is powered by the RXD (rapid extra-silent stepping drive) AF motor unit that enables it to deliver high-speed, high-precision and superbly quiet operation, making it suitable for shooting virtually noise-free video as well as still photographs. In addition, Moisture-Resistant construction and a hydrophobic Fluorine coating repels fingerprints and dirt. The 17-28mm RXD is also fully compatible with various camera-specific features including fast hybrid AF and eye AF. High performance optical construction and design, combined with exceptional portability, make the 17-28mm zoom The ideal fit for your mirrorless camera body and ideal for professional or enthusiast use.

So here is my summary:
Pros:
1. Optical quality is indeed excellent. All issues can easily be corrected in Lightroom or Photoshop but are not really readily apparent when viewing the large picture sizes you can achieve with the Sony A7RIV.
2. Light weight.
3. Very competitive pricing.
4. Nice feeling Zoom and focus rings.
Negatives:
1. Build quality not as good as the Sony lens (but it is half the price).
2. Not fully weather sealed just dust and moisture resistant.
3. Stiff when mounting on the camera (I thought it was broken at first, but with a little persistence it will fit correctly but not in the same positive way as the Sony lenses).
4. Requires IBIS for stabilization. This is not really a problem as stabilization is not often required for a wide angle lens.
5. No manual focus switch although you can simply grab the focus ring and manually focus the lens.
6. Zoom ring dominates the lens, making trying to find the focus ring blind (while eye is still at the viewfinder) difficult or inconvenient.
Summary:
1. Not a full time professional lens.
2. Suitable for intermittent use in controlled environments (given the wide angles are often used indoors, this may not be a serious problem).
3. An excellent compromise for the photographer who needs an excellent quality wide angle lens in their Sony bag.
4. Very good value for money.
