The First Commandment: A Thriller (The Scot Harvath Series Book 6) Kindle Edition

4.6 4.6 out of 5 stars 6,633 ratings

From #1 New York Times and #1 Wall Street Journal bestselling author Brad Thor, the explosive international thriller featuring Navy SEAL turned Homeland Security operative Scot Harvath, who somewhere, somehow, has left the wrong person alive.

Six months ago: in the dead of the night, five of the most dangerous detainees in the war on terror are pulled from their isolation cells in Guantanamo Bay, held at gunpoint, and told to strip off their orange jumpsuits. Issued civilian clothes and driven to the base airfield, they are loaded aboard a Boeing 727 and set free.

Present day: covert counterterrorism agent Scot Harvath awakens to discover that his world has changed violently—and forever. A sadistic assassin with a personal vendetta is wreaking havoc of biblical proportions. Unleashing nightmarish horrors on those closest to Harvath, the attacker thrusts everything Harvath holds dear—including his life—into absolute peril.

Ordered by the president to stay out of the investigation, Harvath is forced to mount his own operation to uncover the conspiracy and to exact revenge. When he discovers a connection between the attacks and a group of prisoners secretly released from Guantanamo, Harvath must ask himself previously unthinkable questions about the organizations and the nation he has spent his life serving.

A renegade from his own government, Harvath will place his life on the line as his search for the truth draws him into a showdown with one of the most dangerous men on the face of the earth.

Brad Thor roars through this nonstop adventure full of international intrigue, twisted betrayals, and ultimate revenge.

From Publishers Weekly

Bestseller Thor's latest thrill-ride begins in anguish. Scot Harvath, navy SEAL turned Homeland Security superagent, sits at the bedside of girlfriend Tracy Hastings, who's in a deep coma after being gravely wounded at the end of Takedown. Meanwhile, five terrorists have been released from Guantánamo Bay as part of a secret hostage deal forced upon U.S. president Jack Rutledge. When one of the terrorists starts targeting Scot's friends and family, Scot discovers that the president won't allow the assassin to be hunted down. Soon enough, Scot is on the run from his own government and in pursuit of the killer. Many characters make appearances from earlier books, in particular Scot's ongoing nemesis, the fascinating, intelligence-gathering expert known as the Troll. It's a long, violent, shoot-'em-up, blow-'em-up pulse-pounder that will leave Thor's fans cheering and begging for more. (Aug.)

Another fast moving story filled with plenty of Action and Suspense that Brad Thor is known for. The story could be from today’s headlines. Keep them coming. Thanks

Hot on the heels of the previous story, Scot Harvath searches for the man who put his new lover Tracy into a coma. The government demands Harvath stay out of it but won’t tell him why. It’s odd that they don’t want a star operator with the Medal of Honor on the case. That adds to the mystery.

And the stakes rise as the killer starts going after others close to Harvath, with flagrantly baroque attacks. And he’s targeting a wedding of someone once close to Harvath.

I have some problems with the story. Our killer structures his attacks on the Biblical plagues. This strains believability. Working alone, traveling alone, arranging his own transport and covering his own tracks, it’s hard to see how he could put all this together. It would be tough enough to pull off all these attacks and remain undetected, even without adding the complexity his scheme demands. If I’m the assassin, I’m keeping it a lot simpler.

Believability is already strained by the character of the Dwarf, the reclusive computer genius and blackmailing information trafficker. He and Harvath, basically enemies, have had to ally on occasion. The Dwarf’s omniscience strains believability as well. I’m okay with him living alone, guarded by his two enormous dogs, and with his computer virtuosity, but sometimes he, too, seems far more able to orchestrate complicated maneuvers, and do it solo, than seems likely.

Thor ups the tension as Harvath's determination to follow the trail - flouting presidential orders not to - make him a wanted man.

I have read every book Brad Thor has written. I like his intensity and style which transfers from book to book. There is no wasted back story and addicting themes within themes move the story. There is no doubt Thor is extremely knowledgeable about his subject matter which is completely relevant to world wide events happening today.
Thor knows how to make his nemesis have no predictability which keeps the book flowing. His characters are strong and powerful which makes every piece of action truly believable. You will know you are reading a Brad Thor book, but you will be unable to predict or guess the ending. Don't even try. Enjoy the pace of this book and then say a prayer that Thor continues to write for a very long time.

I enjoyed the book. But the ending was a let down for me it’s explanation of the brilliant killers motivation for what he did didn’t match with the explanation given. I love Brad Thor novels though and will read another

THE FIRST COMMANDMENT is the 6th book in the Scot Harvath series by Brad Thor. Thor opens the story by placing Scot at the bedside of Tracy Hastings, Scot’s partner and girlfriend. Tracy is in a coma, gravely wounded by a terrorist bomb that Scot feels responsible for. Soon after Tracy’s accident, Scot’s mother is attacked by locusts then placed in a bathtub and left to drown. Scot senses a threat to his family and friends. He believes that his longtime nemesis, the terrorist, Philippe Roussard, is responsible. Ex-SEAL, Harvath, now working for a highly classified unit of DHS, starts to seek revenge for these misdeeds but is told to desist from further action by none other than President Jack Rutledge. The president will not provide a reason to Harvath for his decision. At the same time five really bad Islamic terrorists are released from Guantanamo by the president without explanation. Scot quickly becomes disgusted with the shabby treatment by his own government and strikes out on his own in pursuit of the killer. Scot calls in favors even from the intelligence-gathering and deceitful person known as the Troll. Some of his oldest and closest professional colleagues turn on him while others put their lives on the line to help. The story is classic Brad Thor, well researched and written to keep his followers on the edge of their La-Z-Boys.
I give the novel a 5-star rating.

If you enjoy movies such as the Jason Bourne trilogy, Enemy of the State or 24 TV shows, (and who doesn't!) you'll love these books - terrific series. I read them in order, and although each book stands alone, there are references and characters whom you meet in each of the books, so the continuity helps. Exceptional and very exciting - I'm so glad he wrote them. If you liked Daniel Silva, Steve Berry, Vince Flynn, Alex Berenson, Chris Pavone, and similar exciting writers, you'll love these too. I think 'The Lion's of Lucerne' is the first one. You might find the first couple of chapters of this first book to be a little clunky, but the whole thing gets better and better with each chapter and then with each book, so keep going.
