Publisher's summary

Having wiped out every major city on the planet, the Kyra are herding survivors into safe zones where they have promised to re-establish order and provide the basic necessities. Fences are erected to keep out the failed hybrids, known as “Dregs”. Meanwhile, the successful hybrids are sent away to fight in the Kyra’s war.

That is Christopher Randall’s primary concern when he and his family are taken to the safe zone in New San Bernardino: What if they get conscripted, too? Making matters worse, the zones aren’t as safe as the Kyra claim. Dregs prowl the streets at night, and the Chimeras that hunt them aren’t much better. The zones are little more than concentration camps with a singular goal: Breed humans to produce a new generation of conscripts.

Chris quickly realizes that they’ll be better off in the Wastes, but escaping won’t be easy. The refugees have tracking implants with remote kill switches, and attempting an escape could be the last thing the Randalls ever do. Yet when Christopher’s daughter, Gaby, begins drawing too much attention to herself, he realizes that if they don’t escape soon, his family will never be the same.

Just can't get into it

As I age, I'm noticing the more new-scifi books I try, the more I'm convinced the skilled authors are gone, or fizzling out. For perspective regarding this book, think War Of The Worlds, but with numbly bland grammar and 1 go-nowhere scene repeating over and over. Do today's authors go to college? If so, the communication standards are so seriously lacking. I don't expect old English l, but c'mon! Almost the entire book can be summed-up in 1 sentence : From my defeated father's perspective, our small, post-invasion, captured, and indentured survivors are just laying low to avoid attention and survive. Spoiler alert, that's literally it. I see there's a prequel and sequel to this book. I think I can guess the entire storyline of both. I also think I could incorporate the main elements of all 3 in 1 short novella. Seriously, I hate giving negative feedback like this. I really need to try my hand writing a scifi novel. It's like a dying art or something. Anyone others in their 40s or older feel like this? For example, Darwinia, The Chronoliths, Hell Divers, Manifold Space, The Einstein Prophecy, Dune, Who Goes There, and Rendezvous With Rama.. Now these were excellent books!

As for narration, it was ok. I don't think an entrancing, superb narrator could've given much improvement overall to this "book." 2 stars, as the plot, as advertised could've been something great. Seemed good enough for me to purchase, right? And, at the beginning, I was intrigued for about 30 minutes

This book keeps moving the story along which is good. Jonathan does a nice job reading the story. Looking forward to book 3

stupid

I only finished this out of curiosity. Waste of time. Too much stuff about combat and barely escaping death situations.

More about living with an invasion not overcoming it.

Aliens abound. Not my sort of apocalypse venue, but not bad. It’s just to into getting along and too many different aliens fo me.
