Even the big red 50 lb spreader that starts with an E and ends in a word that rhymes with Hay 2150 has the almost same exact build. The big red 2150 brand does change it up a bit by utilizing a slight different hole system that allows for control for side spread (like the edge-guard system on the Scott's spreaders) which these units do not have so if you really need or want to control for side spread , then this is not the unit for you. If you can look past the lack of an 'edge guard' like mechanism, this spreader is built very well and a pleasure to use compared to those rickety Scott's spreaders. For me, pushing this over my somewhat bumpy terrain and up and down hills is far easier with his model and I get a much more consistent swath when using this spreader. Highly recommended at the price. For over 100 dollars more, you can get the 'edge guard' like mechanism on the big red with slightly better instructions.
Firstly, many reviews complain about the assembly process. I am a mechanically inclined individual, mostly building and repairing cars so I'm used to referencing shop guides and service manuals (which are often unclear), and did not find the assembly process to be very arduous. The instruction manual has only a few "steps", each of which cover a pretty substantial amount of assembly. However these steps are clearly worded in my opinion (albeit, a bit wordy in places) and if I'm being honest, it goes together as one would expect it to. Remember, that thing between your ears is helpful and should be used regularly during assembly! All the hardware is 10mm (except for one 8mm nut/bolt, I think). A ratcheting wrench paired with a combination wrench make tightening all the hardware a breeze.
When using this as a sander, it is important to use very fine sand in order to avoid small stones jamming the open/close mechanism which allows the media the fall onto the distributor plate. For this reason, I have not tried using rock salt as I fear the grains would impede the closing function. The hopper and distributor plate are plastic so I wouldn't be concerned about salt damaging these components.
I adjusted the wingnut stopper on the open/close lever to severely limit the maximum opening capacity. My first use of the spreader I went "fully open" and used about 40 pounds of sand in about 40 feet. The wingnut stopper is extremely useful because you want to be able to yank on that lever as soon as you're ready (i.e., at the desired walking speed), and the wingnut stopper allows you to do just that without releasing an abundance of material or attempting to open it "just enough" which is tricky while also pushing and attempting to monitor how much media is being released.
I believe the primary weak point in this machine will be the rod that connects the open/close lever to the mechanism below the hopper. This steel bar is quite small, around 1/4" and easily bends if anything (e.g., a small rock) is stuck in the gates at the bottom of the hopper. Therefore it is important not to attempt to force the machine closed, and instead resolve the jam so that the lever actuates with ease, as it should. Another potential weak point is the pivot/swing arm assembly between the aforementioned rod and hopper, which uses a loose fit rivet fastener to allow for the pivoting action. This assembly has more play than it did "out of the box"t after a single use, so I expect to eventually replace either the fastener with a nut/bolt/washer combo or the pivot/swing arm assembly itself with something more robust.
Overall I'm very happy with the purchase and hope to get many years of service from this machine. I will update this review should the machine experience any sort of premature failure.
1. Assembly is difficult. I have put together a lot of stuff and consider myself pretty mechanically adept but putting this together was like brain surgery. The instructions are not great and assembly is not intuitive. This took me a couple of hours to get it right, including having made an error and having to undo and then redo the wheel bushings, which is not easy.
2. It is commercial grade. Compared to Scott’s spreaders, which I have owned, this is much more solid, has a much larger capacity, real tires and a much smoother delivery of product so if you are willing to experiment (see below), it is definitely worth it and a great value.
3. There is no conversion chart. I could not find any conversion chart online that could convert from Scott’s, Earthway, Lesco or other popular spreaders to show what the right application setting was. So you have to experiment a little and try to calibrate this on your own to get the right spreading. That is fine with grass seed because you can be off (too much, too little, etc.) and can reapply, but with fertilizer it can be dangerous to experiment as too much can blow your lawn up.
