Product Description
WHY YOU NEED TO MONITOR TEMPERATURE & HUMIDITY
There are many reasons to monitor temperature & humidity, including your health. Maintaining the right temperature and humidity values in your home is crucial for the health and the quality of life inside your household. Keeping proper conditions can help prevent dry skin, chapped lips, a scratchy throat, itchy noses, and reduce the transmission of some viruses like the flu. If you want to stay on top of your home’s temperature and air quality at all times, this mini wireless sensor is the answer.
Another important reason is to protect critical supplies like your food and medicine. These items become even more precious during times like the pandemic when store shelves are empty and nobody wants to leave their home. The fact is there will always be crises such as floods, hurricanes, tornadoes, earthquakes, and blizzards. No one is immune from them.
Whether its during a crises or at any other time, refrigerators and freezers often fail and within hours can heat up and ruin everything in them. Overstocking refrigerators and leaving doors open can also lead to high temperatures. It is best to get notified before it is too late so you can save your food and medicine before it spoils.
Here are some reasons to monitor temperature & humidity:
- To get alerts before your pipes burst
- To monitor greenhouse conditions
- To keep ideal conditions for wine
- To ensure proper conditions at senior living centers
- To keep your pets happy; reptiles, dog houses during summer & winter
- To properly store medicine & cleaning supplies
- To help maintain proper conditions for painting and curing
- To protect art collections and musical instruments
- To enjoy the perfect cigar
- To hatch & raise chickens
- To monitor server conditions
- To brew beer or make wine
- and many more...
The Mini Wireless Temperature and Humidity Sensor by tempi.fi records a new reading every minute and sends alerts directly to your phone.
BE ALERTED RIGHT AWAY
Whether your are monitoring your backup freezer, a baby's room, or the temperature in your doghouse, you need to be made aware of any temperature or humidity problems before its too late.
This sensor sends alerts directly to your phone. You can set high or low temperature and humidity alerts and will receive a notification when the temperature or humidity crosses the thresholds, allowing you to take control of the situation, make necessary adjustments, and mitigate damage.
Not in range when the alert occurs? No problem. If you are out of range when the sensor triggers an alert, you will get the alert on your phone when you come back into range.
WIDE RANGE OF OPERATION
This sensor has a theoretical range of 300ft in a space with no obstacles in its path. Its typical range is between 60 – 120ft., depending on various factors, such as piping and the type of wall material. As long as you are within range, the sensor will have no problems transmitting data to your electronic device. Out of range? No problem, get sync your data and get alerts you missed when you get back into range. In a modern 3,000 square foot home, the sensor can usually be detected in any room.
FOR LARGE TO SMALL APPLICATIONS
This mini wireless sensor can fit just about anywhere. Whether you are placing it in the back of your freezer, a cigar humidor, or a wine cooler, you shouldn't have a problem placing the 1.57" x 1.57" x 0.65" sensor (40 x 40 x 16.5mm).
The sensor is not waterproof because it has a humidity component that needs to be directly exposed to the environment. The sensor can be used outside if it is protected from water, rain, and snow.

OPERATES ON A SINGLE BATTERY FOR OVER A YEARThis mini wireless temperature sensor is built to operate 24/7 indoors or outdoors. If placed outside, it is best to keep it in an airtight ziplock bag to protect against water, rain, or snow. Don’t worry, even inside a protective bag the sensor should still report an accurate temperature reading. The device relies on a CR2477 coin cell battery (included in the package), which should provide power to the sensor for more than a year. |
LEVERAGE THE POWER OF UNLIMITED DATAThe downloadable app is designed to automatically keep an unlimited, minute-by-minute history of its temperature and humidity readings. You may export and generate the entire history - or just parts of it - as a CSV file, which you may open in Microsoft Excel or Google Sheets. Discover patterns and pore over years of temperature-reading history through the app's interactive and intuitive graphs. |
PRESERVE YOUR BELONGINGSHigh levels of humidity can easily cause wooden furniture, instruments, and flooring to warp, bend, or crack. This wireless sensor is a must-have if you keep antique pieces, musical instruments, or art collections in your home. Keep a temperature sensor inside your instrument cases, in your home art gallery, or your antique furniture showroom to stay updated on room temperature readings. |

The reason for this purchase was a kitchen refrigerator and freezer combo that appeared not to cool well, or at least very inconsistent. Before purchasing two of these units, we cleaned out the coils located under the combo that were full of dust. First with a coil brush to get the biggest dust bunnies out, then a final clean with a battery powered little leaf blower (Makita). The leaf blower did the trick and made everything look like new. This required unplugging the combo and removal of back plate to make compressor area accessible for cleanout.
Moving on from cleaning the combo, I reviewed multiple solutions of how to monitor temperature in both refrigerator and freezer compartments. First I was set on some high grade mechanical temperature meters, but after thinking about it for a little longer I didn't want to have to open and close the doors all the time in order to see what the temperature was. Also, the temperature is always moving down when the compressor is running, and up when it is not. The refrigerator and freezer operate in a bandwidth, and when it is equipped with auto-defrost you might think the freezer is not working while it is just cycling through a defrost cycle.
Then the sensor itself; I'm tech savvy due to my profession as an engineer, so I typically try to buy quality over quantity. First thing I did was checking it's accuracy with some lab grade equipment, and readings were well within 35% of the maximum allowable tolerances (see specs). These units can easily be calibrated via the app, which I did, although they would have been fine without these minor adjustments.
The app is easy to use, and has hourly, daily, weekly, monthly and yearly graphs that show min/max and average for selected time range. There is an option to download all data points to a computer or your phone. Very useful to see performance over time, and whether or not it is time to clean the coils. With an auto-defrost feature, you'll be able to tell exactly how many times it runs this feature. If it starts happening more often, you may have door seals that are worn, or usage might have been going up (open door more often, and this cycle runs more often. It was a surprise seeing the freezer go up to 41°F about once a day.
That gets me to one point of improvement I would like to see in the app; there needs to be a delay that can be set before it warns you when temperature reaches a certain level for a determined time. For instance, I set my freezer alarm at 9°F. I want the app to notify me only when the temperature is above this temperature for more than 2 hours. Currently, I get notifications every time the auto-defrost cycle is running, which leaves temperatures above 9°F for a little over an hour. For this reason I had to remove the alarm, or basically set it at over 44°F, which now will not warn me anymore if freezer contents are over 9°F for an extended amount of time.
Last thing I would like to mention is that you'll need to give the app continue location access, which is only related to Bluetooth access. You can turn it off to allow only when you open the app, but it would then not give you an alarm anymore unless you open the app. Without alarms set you could just give access only when the app is open.
This item is definitely a winner, but I still hope Tempi.Fi will add a delayed alarm feature to their app so it can be used in refrigerators or freezers with auto-defrost function, or to limit alarms when loading groceries. It comes with double sided 3M tape, but instead I used "3M Dual Lock" velcro so I easily can take the units out when replacing batteries (they should last 1 year). Perhaps another improvement idea. I hope their will be a gateway soon, as they state they are working on it, and it would allow for temperature checks wherever you are.
This gives me such peace of mind and I can check the temp in the freezer at any point from my phone. It was so easy and FAST to set up. Would definitely purchase again if needed.
I have no reliable external reference to gauge accuracy and have not yet attempted to calibrate the device using one of the few methods recommended, but the advertised error of +/- 2 degrees was just a bit disappointing. That, however is only because the freezer that I'm monitoring is regularly oscillating between highs and lows of about 15 degrees F and I'm trying to understand if that it is by design or a symptom of an impending failure.
I exported the data but I have yet to find it in my Exchange mailbox (yes, I checked my Junk folder). I was able to view in on my iPhone after I sent it to myself in a iMessage chat. It also worked when I sent it to Evernote.
I'm mixed on the Bluetooth capability as you obviously need to be within range in order to get an update. Keep in mind that you will only get a warning ALERT when you're in BT range. While this makes sense for your main kitchen refrigerator/freezer since most people visit their fridge multiple times a day, it's less practical for the freezer in the garage or the one in the basement if you are out of BT range as they are in my case.
I received a SAME DAY email response from the owner when I inquired about the WiFi gateway they are working on with intended release towards the end of this year!!! Thank you! Unfortunately, if I understood correctly, their solution will be a BT-to-WiFi gateway which, in my case, MAY require me to purchase 3 gateways to place in within BT proximity of each my 3 freezers since they are currently out-of-range due primarily to the way my house was constructed. You may not have such requirements, in which case, my review should not negatively influence your purchasing decision...it works just great for local monitoring.
UPDATE #1: I did finally receive the exported data files via email some 5 hours later. Not sure why it took so long, but at least I can report that the export via email function does work. The other two transport mechanisms (via copy into an iMessage and Evernote) were essentially instantaneous, so it proves the email delay is NOT with the product, but with some external process related to my email or internet provider.
UPDATE #2: MY BAD!!! I mistakenly associated the +/- 2 degree error that I reported above with this product. THIS IS INCORRECT...This product's error is a reported +/- 0.3 degrees!! I admit that I did not double-check that spec when I wrote my original review.
UPDATE #3: In fairness, the BT range shortcomings for me are a function of the BT technology and my particular application. I am trying to monitor 3 freezers in a 7,000 sq ft home with 3 stories and a loft. I recognize that this is not a typical-sized home, so those misgivings about the number of gateways required for my application should not be a concern for most people. We are at great risk for electrical outages during the stormy winter months in this area when high winds will cause branches to take down power lines. Unfortunately, that's also the time we head for sunnier climates and have a real need to be able to monitor the freezers while we are away. Will update this review after the gateway is released.
Update #4: Still waiting for the Wi-Fi gateway!!! Knocked off one star.
