So far I've used this to spray polyurethane on old wood and weathered metal and have achieved great results. I'm not trying to paint cars, so a little "nail gun" compressor works just fine to supply the low volume air requirements. If I were to tackle big jobs, I'd use my 6 HP compressor, but I'm not too sure that would be necessary. Adjusting the spray gun is very easy, great atomizing of materials for a beautiful finish, light weight, easy to clean, and with 0.8mm "touch up" gun, 1.3mm, 1.7mm, and 2.0mm spray needle/tip sets, you have everything you need to spray heavy build it primers to fine finishes.
Update 12/21/15: For small jobs, a little twin tank compressor will work just fine, but if you're going to spray some cabinet doors, use a minimum of a 6HP 30 gallon single stage. These don't require the air volume that an HVLP requires, but if doing larger jobs, having the air volume in reserve is a must unless you want to wait in between pieces to let the compressor catch back up. I have not sprayed any water base paint yet, but I'm getting great coverage with poly unthinned (Minwax) and thinning out Rustoleum's Professional Enamel. I've put some gold flake into the enamel, and it shot perfect with a 1.3mm tip/needle.
The only downside to this gun that I can see so far is that it's slow. Because of the LVLP nature, it doesn't lay down paint as fast as some of my other guns. It does, however, consume a lot less air, my 30 gallon 110V oil lubed compressor can keep up with this gun for quite a while (you will eventually have to let it recover however). My bigger compressor puts out way more air than this thing needs, so that gets way in front of the gun and just stays there forever.
A few tips:
1) Thin! Spray guns like this (gravity feed) like thin materials. Thin your paint until it's no more than 60 seconds in a Ford cup for the 2.0MM tip. If you go more than that, the gun will sputter and the paint won't be as smooth. You CAN thin beyond the manufacturers recommendations, just make shoot a test if you have to thin that much and make sure the paint is coming together nicely. I'm shooting General Finishes Milk Paint thinned about 20% with water and 10-15% with Floetrol.
2) Which brings me to my next recommendation. Always use Floetrol if you're shooting latex. Always. It makes everything lay down nice, gives you a little more open time, lubes the gun a bit more. It's just better. Get a jug of it, it'll last you for years. Remember, Floetrol does NOT count as thinning. So if your paint says "do not thin" add the max amount of Floetrol allowed (20%, IIRC) and then start testing your viscosity. If it's still too high, thin anyway.
3) Move a bit slower. If you watch videos on people using air spray guns, they are typically using shop setups with high end HVLP guns (SATA, Iwata, etc). Those guns consume a LOT more air and as a result, put more material out there per pass. The videos of guys using those kind of guns will get you moving much too fast for a gun like this. Move more slowly, but use the same techniques they illustrate. Make sure you get a wet coat, dry spray will not lay down to the mirror finish you want, it has to look wet (you'll get the hang of it).
4) Make sure you filter everything that's heading into your gun. Get a spray gun filter stand and use it, every single time, when loading the gun.
5) Go to Harbor Freight and get disposable paint cups. Saves so much time in cleanup. 6 bucks for 5 of them (IIRC). Fit directly on the gun (no adapter needed). I just throw mine away at the end of the day, but they are reusable.
6) Clean the gun well every time you use it. The first time, it'll seem like a hassle. Once you get the hang of it, I can clean this gun out in about 10 minutes. That's not a bad break down time for something that saves SO much time compared to rolling/brushing and gives a much better result. But clean it every single time.
7) Lube the internals when you clean. I use a very light grease (SuperLube, IIRC) on the needle and all the threads. Don't put too much in the gun or else it will wind up on your paint. Just enough to keep everything moving smoothly.
In summary, very good purchase. I'm saving 1000's by redoing a set of kitchen cabinets myself and am very happy with the results. Can't believe you can get paint that looks like this out of a gun that costs what this set does. But you can, just take your time, learn the gun/setup and you too can lay down a finish that looks like it came out of the factory.
