The LG 27GP95R works great using a USB-C to DisplayPort 1.4 cable connected to the MacBook Pro, which supports running at 4K@95Hz through a Razer Chroma dock. macOS is able to scale everything to "look like 1440p", but with the additional sharpness of 4K. Colors look good and text is sharp.
My gaming laptop has a USB-C port that supports DisplayPort, so I can use the same cable to run at 4K 144hz. It's a slightly older computer though, so I have to run games at 1080p, but they still look great. 1080p scales evenly into 4K, so I find that the graphics still look good.
Since the 27GP95R is a regular LCD panel, colors aren't going to be nearly as vibrant as OLED or miniLED monitors, but everything still looks much nicer and crisper when compared to a generic office monitor. The viewing angles are good, text looks sharp, and the high refresh rate is amazing for gaming.
I debated between 27GP850 vs 27GP950. Order the 950 first. Read quite a few review indicate that 27 4K is too small need windows scaling. quite a few reviewer against windows scaling. Fact : 27 4K 100% scale is hard to read. despite bad review on window scale. I went with 125%. Man, this 4K 27 is sharp. Text.. image... everything is super sharp. Immediately, i cancel the 27GP850 that is shipping. This is a keeper. I thought everything is working fine.... turn on OC to 160hz...
PC: 9900K, Z390, 64g ram.
The horror begin next day. I have 3 monitor hook up to my 2080 TI. 1 more to Yamaha receiver. So it is almost like 4 monitor hook up to PC. everything was working fine the day before. (as i thought??)... this morning, i notice 3 monitor was connected and working as it should. However, the Receiver isnt receiving any signal. Nvidia control panel indicate that 4 is connected.. but only 3 device can be enable... this is very frustrating. i thought i broke 2080 TI. Borrow 3070Ti from my son. and same issue... only 3 can be enable at same time. swap my 2080 ti to another computer and it also can;t enable all 4 at same time. Than tried 1080 ti.. is it somehow was able to get all 4 monitor at same time.
A lot of time spending diagnosis this issue. next task was reformat windows.... same issue... then i was about to give up and return the monitor. I decide to do a monitor reset to factory setting... Reboot my PC last time before take down the monitor for return. All sudden.. all 4 monitor as working.
Conclusion:
Upon setting to factory...OD to 160 was reset to 144. and it works fine... but as soon as i enable to 160, receiver disconnect. It has something to do with 160 VS 144? I am assuming the bandwidth was used up???
After trying to get used to this monitor for a week, I will be returning it due to a few major issues:
1. This monitor DOES NOT have native support for G-SYNC. It's "G-SYNC Compatible", which means it can be used with G-SYNC cards, but only supports a limited version of adaptive sync down to 48Hz. This leads to significant problems in all games I have tried so far. Stuttering is very common in games even at 80-90fps. Expect to have to make a choice for each game whether to turn G-SYNC on or not. One of the main reasons I purchased this monitor was for G-SYNC.
2. The display turns "black" for about 1 second very frequently. I have tried multiple DP1.4 cables and all of the available DP ports on my graphics card. After reading other reviews, it appears that this is a known issue and has not been fixed and probably never will be. How can a monitor be on the market that has an issue like this?
3. Terrible image quality and contrast. Black does not exist at all on this thing, and it's very distracting. Backlight bleed is the worst I have ever seen, and the local dimming feature draws even more attention to it. Even after turning off local dimming and attempting to adjust settings, there is simply no way to get a good quality image from this monitor.
old review: I really like this monitor. But for whatever reason the monitor will sometimes show a black screen for a few seconds. Very disappointing to me since I'm using this for sim racing and those seconds are a big deal when you're going 180mph.
Update, if you disable g sync no black screens but was one of the reasons I bought it was to use that. So I never use g sync now.
Top reviews from other countries
My one annoyance with this monitor is that it does not automatically detect new signals when plugging in a device the way I have seen on other monitors. If you switch setups a lot (e.g. personal and work device, gaming console), it can be a bit of a nuisance to always have to switch over manually and go through the whole menu.
This will tide me over for gaming until OLEDs become a bit more accessible, and will be a fantastic work monitor beyond that for sure.
