Cons: Touchscreen response is not perfect. Micro USB instead of USB C.
Overall for the price I'm really liking it. It's been a long time since I had an ereader and clearly large strides have been made over the last decade on the hardware side. I've got very good vision and the display is really sharp with only occasional ghosting. Lots of typeface options make it customizable for any preference I can possibly imagine.
I've only been playing with it for a few hours and I'm sure there's plenty more to discover both good and bad, but I'm really only interested in using it for its primary purpose - as an electronic book reader.
I like that you can just drop EPUB files over USB. It's quick and it just works.
Can't speak on the battery life since it's my first day messing around with it. I've got the brightness at 10% in my dimly lit apartment and it's both clear and easy on the eyes. The matte screen does a good job diffusing glare from overhead lights.
Build quality and heft are both great. This thing is sturdy, though I'll probably get a case for it anyway just to keep it from getting beat up.
One last thing: It tells you that you can adjust the brightness by gesturing up and down at the left edge. If you really hug the edge, it doesn't work well. If you move about a half inch in, it works almost every time.
Even though it has some minor imperfections, nothing has been annoying enough to turn me off of it.
I've also had a few issues with managing books through Calibre even before doing the mod, but for the most part it's been easy to fix. One time I had an error where the database got borked, and had to factory reset it and reupload all my books. However I suspect that was a user error or something because I've had no issues like that since. The only problem I consistently have is that the metadata on new books are incorrect even if I manually update the metadata before ejecting, but the solution to that is just plugging it back in, updating metadata again, and then ejecting it. That always fixes it.
I don't know why Kobo doesn't include a higher storage size by default, or even as an option. The mod is so easy and 8gb is really not enough for a system that supports cbr/cbz files. My only guess is that the extra storage space slows it down a bit when opening books, and it does- only a little bit, and only when opening a book- but that slowdown is probaby only present on big cards. My pick of 128gb is way overkill, but I wanted to be able to store everything on one device, including manga. OH yeah, one other little issue with big files- it can't load anything over 2gb. It appears in the filesystem when looking at the drive, but the device doesn't see it and it doesn't show up in Calibre. Luckily, for books that's a total non-issue, but for long comics like many popular manga, you'll have to split it up into multiple chunks. Personally, I wound up dividing long runs into multi-volume files, like "Jojolion Vol. 01-14" and Jojolion Vol. 15-27". Pretty easy workaround, and since cbz files are just zip files with a different extension, it's pretty easy to do.
Overall, a great device, at a great price. The Android to Kindle's iPhone.
Expanding memory may require a factory reset which ERASES ALL DATA on the device
Here's how:
Step 1: Pop the back cover off (I used my finger nail and then an old credit card to lift up the cover from the device).
Step 2: Slide out the microSD card from the slot, mine was originally a 16GB card, with an 8GB partition.
Step 3: Connect the microSD card to the computer and make an image of the card, (I used DD on Ubuntu) windows users can use this app: https://sourceforge.net/projects/win32diskimager/
Step 4: Pop in your larger capacity microSD (preformatted to fat32)to your computer and write the image of the previous microSD to it.
Step 5: Expand the third partition on the microSD (the one with the larger capacity) to fill the rest of microSD's capacity.
Step 6: Pop it back in to your Kobo Clara HD. It will be unstable, so you have to perform a factory reset first, once you do, it will work perfectly fine.
Edit 2022: successfully upgraded memory to 128 GB

I like it and works good, great reader for the money.
There are some issuses.
I like to load epub books and I found problems to find the correct order within a series of books. I know that that is probably a problem of the file naming, but I couldn't find a way of solving it on the reader. I didn't liked much the computer app, so I can't say much because I don't use it. I just plug the device to the computer and drop the files on a folder with windows file explorer, not the Kobo app. That is great, I should try to "adapt" the books titles before to find them better on the reader..
The button on the bottom of the device is not confortable. I found myself putting the device to sleep by accident when reading holding the reader on one hand.
But is a great device, well made, good value for the money, and I considered buying another for one of my sons.
Top reviews from other countries
The 6” Glare Free Touchscreen is a standout feature. It allows me to read comfortably in any lighting condition. The screen mimics the look of real paper, reducing strain on my eyes during long reading sessions.
The Adjustable Brightness and Color Temperature is another feature that I appreciate. It allows me to customize the reading experience to my preference, making it comfortable to read at any time of the day or night.
The Blue Light Reduction feature is a thoughtful addition. It reduces the amount of blue light emitted by the screen, which can interfere with sleep patterns. This makes the Kobo Clara HD a great choice for bedtime reading.
The 8GB of Storage is more than enough to store thousands of eBooks. This means I can carry my entire library with me wherever I go.
The WiFi connectivity makes it easy to download new books and sync my reading progress across devices. It's a convenient feature that enhances the overall user experience.
The Carta E Ink Technology delivers crisp, clear text that's easy to read. It's a significant improvement over traditional LCD screens, providing a more paper-like reading experience.
The Kobo Clara HD eReader is a fantastic investment for any book lover. It's user-friendly, packed with features, and provides an exceptional reading experience. Highly recommended!
Everybody should have one, so light, easy to use. Fits in an inside pocket.
