Publisher's summary

Is conversational French turning a little too tricky for you? Do you have no idea on how to order a meal or book a room at a hotel?

If your answer to any of the previous questions was "Yes", then this audiobook is for you!

If there’s even been something tougher than learning the grammar rules of a new language, it’s finding the way to speak with other people in that tongue. Any student knows this - we can try our best at practicing, but you always want to avoid making embarrassing mistakes or not getting your message through correctly.

"How do I get out of this situation?", many students ask themselves, to no avail, as no answer is forthcoming.

Until now.

We have compiled more than 100 French stories for beginners along with their translations, allowing new French speakers to have the necessary tools to begin studying how to set a meeting, rent a car, or tell a doctor they don’t feel well! We’re not wasting time here with conversations that don’t go anywhere: If you want to know how to solve problems (while learning a ton of French along the way, obviously), this audiobook is for you!

How Conversational French Dialogues works:

  • Each new chapter will have a fresh new story between two people who wish to solve a common day-to-day issue you will surely encounter in real life.
  • A French version of the conversation will take place first, followed by an English translation. This ensures that you fully understood just what it was they were saying!
  • Before and after the main section of the audiobook, we shall provide you with an introduction and conclusion that will offer you important strategies, tips, and tricks to allow you to get the absolute most out of this learning material.
  • That’s about it! Simple, useful, and incredibly helpful; you will not need another conversational French guide once you have begun listening to and studying this one!

We want you to feel comfortable while learning the tongue; after all, no language should be a barrier for you to travel around the world and expand your social circles!

So look no further! Pick up your copy of Conversational French Dialogues and start learning French right now!

Excellent listening practice; sometimes a bit odd

I found this book while looking for some entry-level listening practice to supplement my other adventures in learning French. I'm a late A0 (absolute beginner) on the verge of becoming an A1 (beginner), and the conversations in this audio book definitely were a stretch for me. That said, I would still highly recommend the title as I found myself regularly coming back to it for my listening practice.

The stories are entertaining if occasionally a bit weird--such as two people bickering over appliance shopping and a couple that involve fear of wild animals--but it's a hundred conversations, so they can't all be winners. The voice acting by the French speakers is excellent, and they put a bit of humor and emotion into their efforts. They also generally speak slowly enough for even someone at my level to pick out the individual words, For the English portions, Mr. Levin has a soothing, clear voice, but he uses a flat, TV announcer delivery that makes his conversations with the more expressive Ms. Goutey sound a bit like someone reading lines to an actor who's practicing a role.

The only other caveat is that a few of the English translations are slightly awkward or not exactly colloquially correct. For example, "...it pains you that I can access to everything that has always been forbidden to me." I realize that there are always tradeoffs in translation, and the issues are certainly small and don't detract from understanding the intent of a given phrase.

All in all, a small price to pay for several hours of good-quality listening practice.

A Great Next Step

This is an excellent book to help beginners to continue their learning of the French language. I am not fluent yet but found this book really helpful in helping to put what I learned in 2000 Most Common French Words in Context to use. Where I didn't catch every word said I was able to follow fairly well. If you are wanting to improve your French then this is an excellent book to have. The narration was well done: clean, clear and easy to follow.

Great for Second Year Students

I would say this is not an introductory level for French but I think it would be great for the student thAt has been taking French for a year or two. It goes through a whole conversation in French and then goes though it all in English. For the novice you'll definitely learn the pronunciation/accent and he able to pick out a few words. I do feel that this a great resource especially as a refresher before you travel to a French speaking country.

Great examples of french conversation

The PDF is very helpful. The conversations are practical and some interesting. Great examples of day to day french conversation. The only critique I have is of the voice of the English speaker during the English translation parts of each chapter. He sounds like a computer and has a robotic-ish voice that eventually gets annoying to listen to. Otherwise, the french speakers are pleasant and natural sounding.

Excellent book!

I am planning a trip to France in a few months, and wanted to improve my basic comprehension of the French language. I love how the book presents the dialogues, the pace of learning and the approach to teaching. This has been very useful for me, and I already feel more confident about my social interactions in French.

Great Tool For Improving Casual French

I found this book to be extremely helpful in improving my conversational skills with other francophones. It has helped me to learn idioms and other expressions found in more casual, laid back dialogue. Highly recommend for anyone looking to improve their skills or who will be entering a French speaking area soon!

Great tool to improve your French

I am an avid language learner and audiobook listener. I have used audiobooks to improve many of the different languages I study. I know they work, and I wanted to get my ears on this since I've recently visited France and want to improve my language skills.

This audio moves at a fast pace. There are explanations and suggestions for use at the beginning and end. Each chapter has the dialogue spoken by native French speakers and then spoken in (American) English translation.

The positives: The native accents are accurate and clear. The topics and associated vocabulary are on a very nice variety of topics that aren't often covered in other language audios. They are timely and sometimes very funny. If you learned these conversations to mastery level, you would be well prepared with French.

The negatives: The English translations aren't always in natural spoken language. You can guess what they actually mean from context, but a little more care could have been done with that. The performances can sound very stilted. The female performer sometimes mispronounces her English (usually a problem with which syllables are stressed).

I don't think any of the negatives are deal breakers, but they are there. I recommend this to any French learner without reservation, and I'm happy to have gotten a review copy. I would offer a few further pieces of advice to interested listeners.

You have to do the work. This means studying the accompanying PDF and practicing speaking out loud. New learners would benefit by changing the playback speeds to slow down to really hear everything.

Great way to improve your French

This book works particularly well if you have already learned some basic French (alphabet, sounds, basic words) and need to expand your vocabulary or improve your conversational French language skills. There's a wide variety of topics covered and are a practical way to learn French. Personally, I have had difficulty with understanding conversational French (misunderstanding words etc) and this audiobook has really helped me to make progress.
