Nanometer Thickness Diaphragm
A breakthrough core technology developed by HIFIMAN and first of its kind in headphone application. Working with this advanced material is extremely challenging yet the successful incorporation of this film as the HE1000se’s planar driver is the cornerstone of its remarkable sound.
Patented "Window Shade” System
Created to meet the need for driver protection and optimized open-back design.
Stealth Magnet Design
Unlike the sound waves created by a conventional magnet, the special shape of Stealth Magnets enables the waves to pass through the magnets without generating interference.
HIFIMAN’s advanced magnet design is acoustically transparent, dramatically reducing wave diffraction turbulence that degrades the integrity of the sound waves. The reduced distortion yields pure sonic output that is accurate and full-range.

I have an 8 year old Cambridge Audio DVD player claimed to be good at music, with its big power amp, plugged into small Bose sub woofer and tiny satellites. I use QED Reference cables which are excellent value for money. I think the power amp needs a pre-amp to sound better. 8 years ago I splashed out to get a Benchmark DAC//headphone amp, then a few years ago, I pulled out the large jack plug and the headphone amp blew its last sound. I recently discovered that the rear XLR sockets are working well with the front volume control, so why not use these?
OK why this preable? These HIFIMAN HE1000se headphones do require an audiophile system to reach maximum performance, like all Audiophile products. So my system is limited. I recently bought an Apple MacBook Pro M2 new.
So here we go...Comfort- they are big, my head I think is small. They do stay in place- my wife laughed when she saw them on my head- she doesn't laugh very often. The clamping force is quite comfy. Yesterday I wore them for 6 hours. So 4/5.
Cables: They come with 2 free cables,no info provided, but I think they maybe single strand silver. Using the 3.5mm 90 degree cable, nice touch, into my new M2 Macbook pro, (we had a power cut this morning).
Sound: I listened happily to Ben.E King (Best Of), Alice Cooper-Hey Stoopid, Band on the Run(Wings) all brilliant, but then I noticed the high end shrill response, especially with Ace of Base-All that she wants, some reviewers had mentioned this. . I was listening to my music collection that I had copied over into iTunes (now Music). Power restored, I transferred to my 10 year old Macbook pro, using my music recorded on my external hard drive. The top end was much more reduced but sounded better. I then tried my new Macbookpro M2 again but listening direct from my external hard drive plugged in. Much better. top end very open but under control. The headphones handle all types of music I can throw at it. From heavy rock to strings and especially brass instruments. Very musical and involving especially with Ben E. King.
DVD audio.: Using my Benchmark DAC2 HGC XLR into my new Aune S17 Pro headphone amp, I used my new GU Multistrand silver headphone cable (4 pin XLR Balanced) , multi-strand cable handle high frequency better. The sound is PURE DEAD BRILLIANT (PDB). An old Scottish expression. Everything from James Bond transients to Bruce Springsteen. Very open well separated and engaging, very musical but with loads of power, Unusual combination.
Live In Hyde Park,(DVD bluray) my favourite,The Blues Bothers, Opera (Les Troyennes-Berlioz), Just Good Friends-BBC Sitcom. Vocals ere extremely clear and well separated from background. Background is silent, Instruments sound like musical instruments. I spent 8 years playing the violin in my very early days, The Aune S17 says it is tuned to musical instruments. The headphones are expensive, but in my experience the only other headphones I have liked were Stax with their valve headphone amp, far more expensive.
YouTube Videos: I watch a lot of Youtube videos (on old computer) from current news to old UK TV programmes made in 1970-1990's. Using the HIFIMAN HE 100 se with the free cable as before, the audio was very good, vocals and music were exceptional, hence 6 hours watching Youtube yesterday. No sign at all of shrill top frequencies, maybe due to Youtube compression.
Home-Made videos: I have just checked on my new computer (M2 2023) with free cable ,and my videos are running quite bright in upper frequencies compared to old Macbook Pro 15 inch 2013. I can adjust them in DaVinci Resolve (free video Editer) when I can study how to do it. Maybe just need some GU multistrand silver cable with 3.5mm balanced plug for the headphones. I think it's the new computer headphone drive and DAC running a bit rough.
As I said yesterday I watched/listened to Youtube videos using free cable on old 2013 computer for 6 hours never having noticed any brightness, only with new computer.
Amazon Service: Excellent as usual. Very helpful and I was rewarded with prompt rebates on my China Import Tax assessment. Most unexpected. Maybe spend it on some more multicore silver cable.or portable DAC/Amp for my new computer. Products arrived in time well packaged, no problems at all. Big thanks to everyone.
The HEKse is simply the most resolving, detailed headphone I have ever heard—it validates the cliche of “hearing things in your music you’ve never heard before”. In terms of soundstage, it makes the Utopia’s staging sound positively claustrophobic, and the iconic oval shaped build of this series surrounds your ears without touching them, making them unsurpassed in terms of forgiveness of head placement. Without sacrificing a bit of comfort, the listening experience of this headphone is truly like being surrounded by sound, with each instrument placed in a perfect proscenium arch that one could point to with a conductor’s baton.
Unlike the Susvara, which is impossible to drive without using a proper power amp designed for floor speakers, this headphone can be run off of a dongle (although surely a dedicated headphone amp really allows it to shine). Also unlike the Susvara, which is definitely pre-Harman and tuned flat as a pancake (fulfilling the outdated “reference” tuning that has cursed the audiophile industry for decades), this headphone is infinitely more versatile for all musical genres—it lacks any of the bass roll off that renders the Utopia and Susvara so unsatisfying for rock, hip hop or other modern genres. It packs a punch in the low end that offers a thrilling, physical experience, and has all the fun lacking in reference-tuned cans.
The only caveat to the HEKse, which is why I mentioned the newer HEK Stealth as being the finest option for all tastes, is that this earlier implementation of the Stealth magnet really opens up the frequencies from 10,000hz and above, so those who are super-sensitive to bright headphones might find it a bit fatiguing on certain tracks. This quality has never troubled me, as the brightness is offset by a formidable bass presence, and helps contribute to its extraordinary detail retrieval. It can also easily be tamed down a bit by just a shade of PEQ, although I’ve personally never felt a need for that.
The newer HEK Stealths tame these highs just a bit, and add an extra 5-6dB to the bass shelf that really offers some hefty bass slam. But as outstanding as the HEK Stealth is (it’s the headphone I find myself listening to most often these days), it still doesn’t achieve the jaw-dropping precision this HEKse achieves (it comes close though).
The decision involved in choosing between these two comes down to one’s sensitivity to high end, how much of a critical listener one is, and how important it is for a headphone to be tuned perfectly out of the box. For the latter, the HEK Stealth is probably the better choice; if one truly wants a surgical level of detail and doesn’t mind applying a bit of PEQ to tame the highs or isn’t bothered by bright cans, these HEKses are the way to go.
All of these price drops are an omen of a new flagship from Hifiman coming to market soon, and if their recent choices suggest anything, I expect it to be another oval pad iteration (as opposed to the more traditional roundish profile of the Susvara), with a much higher sensitivity, even more alignment with Harman tuning, and a likely game changer in terms of detail and timbre. I also expect it to be priced in the Susvara range, so this HEKse still remains an extraordinary buy, and I can’t imagine anyone suffering from any FOMO buying this legendary headphone at this price. If the HE1000se was the last headphone purchase I could make, I would be content with it for a lifetime, and I would take it over my Utopias and Elites in a heartbeat. Grab it up while you still can!

Pros
- Better spatial representation than HD 800S. You feel you are surrounded by the sounds with a bit of the height dimension added in. Unlike the HD800S it does not sometimes feel like sounds are coming from points.
- In many areas the level of detail seems to be higher than HD800S, and you can feel the distances of different sounds more distinctly.
- The bass is much more present compared to HD 800S
Cons
- The human voice range is underemphasized compared to HD 800S, that to me feels less emotionally impactful. Also the instruments which work in the same range of the human voice like cello, they sound distant and a bit muffled as other sounds take over. This was a deal breaker for me as in a song I want to connect most with the singer and less with the instruments, and even the instruments I like most are underemphasized.
For me or someone who likes similar music as me, may be EQing can make it a lot better
