A Next Generation Monitoring Experience from JBL

For music production, post and broadcast, JBL 708P active studio monitors make it easier to achieve a superior monitoring experience in your studio. Thanks to JBL's acclaimed Image Control Waveguide (found on their flagship M2 reference monitor), 708P monitors project an amazingly large "sweet spot" for sonic accuracy throughout your mixing space. The soundstage is deep and wide, with ample output that competes with much larger speakers. With built-in DSP for advanced equalization and delay options, and your choice of analog or digital input, the JBL 708P is an outstanding solution for nearfield and midfield monitoring.

Greater dynamic range through next-gen driver technology

JBL's bi-amplified 708P studio monitor employs two custom drivers, the 2409H high-frequency compression driver, and the 728G low-frequency driver. Each was designed specifically by JBL for optimal dynamic range and low distortion in their relative frequency ranges. Between them, you'll hear remarkably linear output from below 39Hz all the way up. Another benefit of these drivers is their impressive volume handling: JBL reports the 708P offers two to three times the output of comparable studio monitors.

Powerful bi-amplification system

To get the best results from their custom drivers, JBL designed a powerful Class D amplification system for the 708P studio monitor. A 250-watt amp powers the 2409H high-frequency transducer, while an additional 250-watt amp drives the 728G low-frequency transducer. This system allows the 708P to deliver much more output than similar-sized speakers, allowing you to place it at greater distances in post production or mastering environments.

Innovative waveguide creates a large sonic sweet spot

If the 708P's design looks familiar, it's because it's equipped with the same waveguide as their flagship M2 reference monitoring system. Designed for sonic accuracy and neutrality, this waveguide also allows for a better sonic transition between the high- and low-frequency drivers. Said another way, you won't hear a noticeable dip in the crossover frequency range like you do with many two-way monitors. The waveguide also creates an exceptionally large sonic sweet spot, allowing for accurate monitoring throughout more of your control room. We've heard a lot of studio monitors at Sweetwater, and we're extremely impressed with the sound of the JBL 708P.

Combat acoustics and sync to video with DSP-based EQ and delay

In an acoustically perfect room, JBL's 708P monitor sounds remarkably neutral. For the real world, however, the 708P is equipped with DSP-based EQ to compensate for room acoustics. Fine tune your sound with the 12-band Room EQ, or use the 8-band User EQ for a customized response curve — perfect for compensating for screen loss when placed behind a perforated cinema screen. In larger spaces you can use digital delay to align speakers relative to your listening position. Additional AV Synchronization delay is ready to compensate for high-latency video displays.

6 Years Later Pros & Cons

I've had these monitors now for 6-7 years and I trust them. When I purchased them they were priced a little under 6K after taxes. Only thing I did over time was add a sub (KRK Sho). FYI it was hard to find a sub that could even keep up with these. You will have to step into the big leagues. I am noticing a little more white noise coming from them. There not dead quiet as they use to be for years. I've ran them extremely hard though as they have enough output to get you into the midfield arena with a good sub. If you're not running a sub you will need to isolate these motors from sitting directly on your desk if you don't have stands. The low end needs it. Jbl also could have done better with updates and given us some new presets. Though I run them on the flat setting. It would be cool to have some fresh ideas and presets from them. Nothing better on the market at this price point still in my opinion. I'm set up in a media room and they have absolutely no problem's filling it. I wish jbl would come out with a 10 inch version!?!

JBL 708P

I had these JBL's in my want list and they were back ordered for 8-12 months. Luckily my longtime Sweetwater salesman Caleb Lowery contacted me when a set became available. I had also listened to the Focals but I was already using the JBL 6300 series . 2- 6332 Mains with 2 6325 subs. The JBL 7 series are more like 3 ways due to the dual mid / high drivers and What a step up from my JBL 308's I used for near fields ever since they came out .So from a 500 dollar set to the 708's and I don't use this saying often but these are game changers. The detail in these speakers are unbelievable. The JBL 708's may very well be the best investment I have ever made in my studio. I have been using these 4-5 months now and all I can say is get your wallets out boys and girls and hear what you been missing . You will not regret this purchase and I could go on for days about them...

Low distortion listening

My background is as a cellist and a hifi stereo enthusiast, but I've often looked to recording monitors as a gateway to accurate sound. I've owned the Dynaudio BM5a, BM6 MKII, and the Focal Solo6 Be - all used in a nearfield hifi setup for music listening. After falling in love with compression drivers, I found this JBL 708P and have never been more pleased with the music reproduction in my listening room. I'm running these from a Benchmark DAC3 HGC and I'm hearing deeply into recordings as previous layers of distortion are stripped away. Highly recommended!

Amazing Monitors

Replaced my KRK VXT"s with a pair of these JBL"s. They sound amazing. The stereo field is much more focused and clean. The bottom end is super tight, and most importantly, I can hear everything. I actually don"t want any other engineers to have these.

Incredible Value

I ordered these 5 months ago and they finally arrived 2 weeks ago.
I wanted to spend some time on them before writing a review.

2 weeks have passed and I still have a smile on my face every time I get a chance to listen to these monitors. Before I get into the sound I want to comment on the incredible quality and craftsmanship of these speakers. They're a matte black finish and the cabinet feels very well made of high material. The speakers are heavy and sturdy as a rock. No resonances or cheap hollow sound when tapping the cabinet. The side handles have proven incredibly useful for adjustment and mobile applications.

Now onto the sound:
First impression was that they are neutral and flat as a ruler. Every frequency jumps at you without extra coloration. They are not boring however. Very vibey and you will instantly start getting lost in your mix when it starts to come together and this has made the mixing process incredibly enjoyable again. The depth and stereo image on these are absolutely stellar. I have them 2 meters apart and I still hear instruments coming at me in the very center of the image. It's as if you're running a dedicated center channel. Listen to a well produced track and the speakers get lost and the sound just blends beautifully.
The clarity is out of this world. Every detail will jump at you but it won't be harsh and still it'll let you know of the problem frequencies in your mix. Over the years my ears have become sensitive and my old monitors caused instant ear fatigue within an hour of use but thankfully I get zero fatigue with these. I have sat in front of them for over 10 hour sessions on some days (with 10-15 min breaks every 2 hours) and they have been very easy on the ears.

The bottom end is punchy and full without any port resonance issues. The bass rolloff is as expected for an 8 inch driver. A sub would be needed for mastering applications requiring information below 30 hz. I don't do my own mastering so they're more than enough in the low end for 99% of applications.

Translation? I've only had them for 2 weeks and finished about 8 mixes on them but each one has translated incredibly well and I'm quickly learning them. Spend some time remixing your old works on these so you get to know them and you'll be glad you did.

DYNAMICS!!! If you're a lover of dynamics and work on anything that isn't ruined by overuse of compression then you will love these monitors. You will hear the faintest of details to incredible percussive transients within the same set volume. They don't lose any information when you're working late at night and have the volume at lower levels.

Overall, These are in my opinion incredible value for the money. You will not hear anything better unless you move up to the $8k+ range of 3 way speakers. I demoed many speakers in similar price range to these and these have them all beat. They just sound so natural and bring out all the musical timbers beautifully.
If you do get them, give them some space from each other to breathe and the music really opens up. In my experience if you provide at least 1.5 meters between them and you'll be smiling. These are stellar and I am already thinking of saving up for a 5.0 setup (another 708p for center and 2x 705p for RL, RR) for when needed.

What Do Our In-house Gear Experts Think?

Carson McClain

I had a chance to shoot out the JBL 708P against other top brands of studio monitors, and to my ears, these were the best. As a seasoned engineer, I was most impressed by their detailed mids and highs. They also delivered better low end than all six of the other monitors I compared them to.

Jacob Leonhardt

In all my years of working with studio equipment, I have never heard studio monitors sound like the JBL 708P 7 Series monitors. The mid response is excellent. The highs are crispy. And the lows will make you believe you have a sub hooked up. The waveguide technology allows me to reach over and make adjustments to my mix without leaving the sweet spot. If you combine all of this and the flexibility of the built in DSP, there is no other studio monitor like these.
