Pixel is moving away from small devices. Samsung still has a few, but the problem is that they're Samsung devices. Apple has them too, but (surprisingly) they still haven't entered the Android market. Luckily, we have Asus.
The Zenfone is that phone that will make everybody do a double-take and ask what it is. Try saying "Asus Zenfone" just once and have everybody in the room understand you the first time (seriously, if you manage this, you might have a future as an orator).
The first thing you notice is how sleek it is. It fits easily in one hand, you can swipe all across the screen with no issues (very handy if your other hand happens to be engaged in any repetitive motions intended to elicit "happiness" ;) ).
The back is a textured soft plastic that doesn't feel cheap, but discolours easily (the first con). The edges are aluminium (or aluminum, for non-fluent English speakers) that shows quality. All buttons are on the right. They include a fingerprint scanner on the power button that works so well that it actually becomes frustrating when you just want to check the time and end up unlocking the phone. It can also do some tricks (not the kind you do for dollar bills) like swiping down for the notifications and changing the audio etc.
At the bottom, you have a USB-C port (now truly universal) and a 3.5mm jack at the top (so quaint).
The screen is great! So sleek and sharp. Super-amoled for the darkest darks and a high refresh rate so that you can zap through the menus at lightning speed. It has one of the worst light sensors I've seen though (second con) and you will likely have to manually adjust the brightness or just leave it at around 80% because the screen is not very bright (3rd con).
Inside you have almost-stock Android. Asus put some of their software in it. Some of it is useful, some isn't. The only actual bloatware is Google bloatware. Asus gives you the option to pick between their GUI and Google's. Both work fine, but coming from a Pixel, Google was my choice. Asus gives you the option to join their ecosystem with MyAsus if you own any of their devices. Thankfully, they had the sense to hide the feature in a place so far in the menus, you'll only ever get there if you pocket your phone without locking your screen.
Battery life is great. 90% will get you through the day and you'll go back home (if you ever left in the first place) with around 35%.
You can play pretty much any mobile game on it, but I wouldn't know because I have an irrational hatred for bad ads.
It has a twin sim! And Supports mirror apps! Now you can cheat on your wife while using one phone! The good news is that this will let you save money on a second phone and buy your daughter and your mistress a new iphone for Christmas (instead of just buying one for your mistress). The bad news is that you will inevitably mess up and send your wife the wrong text, so maybe you should just buy a second phone after all.
The last thing to know is that if you're not sure what to buy between the US and Int'l version, just get the US version. It covers all of the same bands as the Int'l version and more.
It's supposed to have 5G, but I don't know if that's true because the 5G still hasn't activated my Covid vaccine and turned me into a zombie-sheeple hybrid.
So im just going to talk about the 2 main features of this phone that I love, that were the reasons for my buying this in the first place. (Size, Fingerprint reader)
The first one being the small form factor. This was the main reason for me getting this phone as I have smaller hands and find it difficult to text one handed on larger phones. The phone also feels very nice to hold in the hand and my thumb can finally reach any part of the screen again. Having this in my pocket when I go out, I barely notice it is there. Win
The second being the physical fingerprint reader. I am one of those people suspicious of the face unlock so I prefer a fingerprint reader. After I upgrade to the Oneplus 8 from the Oneplus 6 I didnt know how much I missed it until it was gone. I cook a lot so its a pain trying to get a in-screen fingerprint reader to register when I have water or have flour on my hands. This physical reader is super reliable and quick, it unlocks the first time every time. The placement of it is also really well thought out, as instead of it being on the back of the phone its on the side, which is one less step for my fingers to unlock the phone. Win
So the battery wasnt one of the things I was looking for but I have to mention how incredible it is. The phone really does sip battery. After charging to 100% it can handle regular use all day and still be at around 70% or better, its great. It also has fast charging so getting back up to 100 takes no time at all. Win
Finally I just want to point out some other things this phone has that I love:
Headphone jack. Win
Gimbal Camera. Win
Dual Speakers. Win
Nice Display. Win
If you are looking for anything that I pointed out in a phone look no further. Buy this phone as you will not be disappointed. Any review that is hating on this phone is either from user error or lack of due diligence with researching what they were buying. This really is a solid smartphone in 2022.
