Cruel Intent (Ali Reynolds Book 4) Kindle Edition

4.5 4.5 out of 5 stars 1,312 ratings

From New York Times bestselling author J.A. Jance comes a chilling tale of suspense, where a cold-blooded murderer lures former newscaster Ali Reynolds into a chilling web of online romance—and doom.

On a dating site, SingleatHeart.com, bored housewives can find romance with married men looking for sex without strings. But these “married singles” are flirting with more than just their vows. At the heart of this seemingly innocent service, a vengeful computer hacker is playing games with people’s lives...and deaths.

Ex-television journalist Ali Reynolds just wants a break from excitement. In the midst of a remodel, the last thing she expects is a murder investigation that will stop the construction on her home. But when the savagely murdered body of stay-at-home mom Morgan Forester is found, Ali’s contractor Bryan is the prime suspect. Bryan swears he has nothing to do with his wife’s murder—but as the investigation progresses Ali seems to be the only resident of Sedona who believes him.

Determined to prove Bryan’s innocence, Ali unknowingly lands herself directly in the path of a calculating killer. In a world filled with encrypted computer traps and life-threatening lies, will Ali be able to decode the actions of a ruthless man determined to destroy women—before he uses his wicked website to find her?

Editorial Reviews

From Publishers Weekly

As if remodeling an old mansion near picturesque Sedona, Ariz., isn't stress enough for Ali Reynolds, the plucky former TV newscaster must also deal with cybernetic lonely hearts, frustrated lust and murder in bestseller Jance's uneven fourth Ali Reynolds thriller (after Hand of Evil). After serial killer Peter Winter claims his fifth victim, who happens to be the unfaithful wife of Ali's contractor, Bryan Forester, homicide detective Dave Holman suspects Bryan did it. At considerable personal risk, Ali has to clear Bryan in order to get her house ready for Thanksgiving dinner with her gossipy, meddling mother, Edie; her son, Chris; Chris's amputee fiancée; sometime boyfriend Holman; and the rest of her cozily predictable entourage. A too conveniently noted license plate number and some unlikely Taser-wielding by Edie undermine credibility. Still, Jance's trademark breathless pace compensates for stale situations and shallow characterizations. Author tour. (Dec.)

From School Library Journal

Starred Review. American Mystery Award winner Jance's (www.jajance.com) fourth entry in his Ali Reynolds series finds the ex-television journalist defending her contractor when he's accused of having murdered his wife. Ali is mercifully no longer blogging at cutlooseblog.com, a narrative element that weighed down previous books in this series. The text is well written, engaging, and humorous, and the audio production, too, is of stellar quality, with actress Karen Ziemba giving each character a distinct personality. Other factors making this the best series offering to date are the addition of new characters and a tighter plot. Recommended.—Nicole A. Cooke, Montclair State Univ. Lib., NJ

J.A. Jance is the New York Times best selling author of 46 contemporary mysteries in four different series.

A voracious reader, J. A. Jance knew she wanted to be a writer from the moment she read her first Wizard of Oz book in second grade. Always drawn to mysteries, from Nancy Drew right through John D. McDonald's Travis Magee series, it was only natural that when she tried her hand at writing her first book, it would be a mystery as well.

J. A. Jance went on to become the New York Times bestselling author of the J. P. Beaumont series, the Joanna Brady series, three interrelated thrillers featuring the Walker family, and Edge of Evil. Born in South Dakota and brought up in Bisbee, Arizona, Jance lives with her husband in Seattle, Washington, and Tucson, Arizona.

Jance is an avid crusader for many causes, including the American Cancer Society, Gilda's Club, the Humane Society, the YMCA, and the Girl Scouts. A lover of animals, she has a rescued Dachshund named Bella.

J.A Jance has become one of my favorite, preferred authors. The Ali Reynolds series is quickly becoming my favorite series of the four she has written: J.P. Beaumont (Seattle, WA Policeman Detective) was her first series, Joanne Brady (Cochise Country, AZ Sheriff; my favorite and my introduction to the southwest when I moved to Cochise County, AZ 3 years ago), and the Walker Family (Pima County (Tucson), AZ Sheriff) is her fourth series are all excellent. Having said that, it would be very difficult for me to decide which of the four series is my favorite. I supposed the favorite would have to be whichever series Jances' latest book is from. Can't wait to read more!

My only other favorite, preferred authors is Kathy Reichs, author of the "Temperance Brennan" or "Bones" series, which I would assume most TV watchers and medical/forensic mystery readers know of. She writes several series as well: Virals (teenage mysteries)' Exposure, Code and Seizure.

As both a retired U.S. Army NCO and forensic psychologist, I find these series extremely engrossing and highly enjoyable. I would recommend them to anyone who has an interest in mystery stories. The Reich series for medical/forensic/police mysteries and J.A. Jance for non-standard Sheriff/police mysteries. They are truly worth your time and energy. And, on Kindle especially, the price is inconsequential.

J.A. Jance is an author I enjoy reading. Once I find an author I like I will usually read everything they write. If they already have 10-20 titles out by the time I discover them, I will usually read them straight through in order. She is a solid writer in a genre that I enjoy. I don't have the sort of critical mind that evaluates one title as being superior to another. I just experience it as another solid offering in a series that I enjoy.

Each book in this series is unique and compelling. Ms. Jance doesn't just make a few cosmetic changes and then tell the same story over and over.

I just finished reading the 4th in the Ali Reynolds series, Cruel Intent. I loved it!

A lot of the returning characters were like getting together with old friends, and a lot of the new players would certainly be welcomed back by me.

Ali is still in the middle of renovating her dream house, with the help of the faithful, self appointed manager nee personal assistant, Leland Brooks. Boy, I wish I had one of him in my life! In the meantime, her son Chris has a surprise announcement, and Ali's mom, Edie, is cooking up trouble with her new pink taser!

Ali's contractor, Bryan Forrester, is suspected of murdering his wife. And boy, can Ali relate...she was previously accused of murdering her almost ex husband. So, while Ali is helping to defend Bryan's good name, she stumbles across a dating website called Singleatheart.

I have a lot of friends, including my own daughter, who have used internet dating sites, and this storyline was just riveting to me. It scared the heck out of me at the same time. As in all of this author's books, it seemed well researched and certainly timely, with all of the scams going around on the internet.

I was not disappointed in this addition to the Ali Reynolds series, and can't wait to get my hands on the next one!

Is it my imagination or is J.A. Jance becoming scarier? This book totally engaged me from the start. The theme involves a computer whiz who can manipulate your life or destroy it from his computer. It was often unsettling but I felt compelled to read on. Look... here I am, writing about a book I bought on Amazon. Is someone hacking into my life as I write this? There are some very scarey images left in my head from violent episodes in this book. Read it.

I keep saying the same things about every book J.A. Jance writes! I have never been disappointed in her books!

I enjoyed her strong female character in the Joanna Brady series and that prompted me to read this book. Ali is not any near the type of character but the mystery will get your attention. Not one of the authors best but a quick easy read on a lazy day.
