I am very new to photography and this is my first DSLR. In the two months I've had this, I've never regretted this purchase once. Now whenever there is a possibility of being in a location where I could take some cool pictures, I take my camera with me. I get so excited when I get to use it.
Pros-
The included kit lens is a steal. I feel the 18-55mm focal range is great for a beginner photographer. Gives you the ability to zoom without quality loss and at the current price, it's only $100 more than just the body. I didn't realize how expensive lenses are, so $100 for a decent lens is crazy good.
The Feature Assistant. This feature is great for people who are learning about photography. Using the dial to switch to different modes will show a basic screen on the LCD showing how different setting affect the outcome of your picture.
LCD autofocus. When using the LCD screen, the dual-pixel auto-focus is really good at tracking faces. REALLY GOOD.
Battery life. Now, I can't compare this to other cameras as I've never owned another one, but after about 700ish pictures and some video, the battery meter still shows 50%. The battery life exceeded expectations.
Small and lightweight. Again, nothing to compare this too, but this is very comfortable to hold for long periods of time. The body and kit lens together weight less than two pounds.
Picture quality. Right now, the pictures I'm taking aren't the best as I'm still learning, but despite that I'm really loving the quality of what I take. I've also seen what professionals have taken with this camera and it's great.
Touch focus. When I've taken some b-roll video of inanimate objects, sometimes the auto focus has a hard time settling on one thing, causing it to blur for a split second while it redetermines where it should focus. You can easily touch the screen where you want it to focus and it will stay focused on that spot even if you move the camera around a bit.
Video quality. Now, this doesn't do 4K, so that might be a con for some people, but I'm perfectly fine shooing at 1080P. I prefer to record at 60FPS as well, which this camera does quite well. Besides the auto-focus getting a bit goofy sometimes when filming objects instead of people, it still does a great job. Very happy with the quality and with a lower aperture lens, I'm sure the quality would be even better.
Wi-Fi and Bluetooth. I use this all the time to transfer pictures to my phone either to see how well my photos are turning out or to quickly edit photos and upload them to social media from my phone. This has been a more useful feature than I thought it would be.
LCD screen. From what I saw when looking for a camera to buy, most of the cameras had a fixed screen or didn't have a touchscreen. The SL2 has both a touchscreen and an adjustable screen. This is very handy when you are vlogging or trying to use the screen at an angle where you normally wouldn't be able to see the screen. The touchscreen also is nice and has helped me from transitioning from taking pictures on my phone to using a DSLR.
The kit lens. This is a great lens to get with this body if you're a beginner. Even though the aperture is a bit high for my taste( I shoot a lot in low lighting), it gives you the ability to zoom and take great pictures from a farther distance or shoot close ups without having to change lenses. For $100 extra, it's a steal.
Cons-
Kit lens F Stop. Not a huge con since this lens was only $100 extra with the body, but the lens isn't the best for low-light shooting.
Built-in mic. The built in mic start having major issues when the noise levels start getting loud. Also not the greatest mic. Bought an external mic which handled audio much better.
To be honest, I can't think of a lot of cons and that's probably because this is my only experience with more professional grade cameras. I have really enjoyed using this camera and it has gotten me very excited to learn so I can take full advantage of the hardware.

I would buy this again. This is a great camera to learn, grow, create, and even make a few bucks. Out of the box auto setting are great, learn to use the manual settings to get the most out of photos and video. The camera comes equipped with easy to follow guide but honestly learning the camera setting makes all the difference. Audio suck, if you plan to do video buy a shotgun mic. Light and versatile.
Additional equipment in order recommended:
Canon EF-S 24mm f/2.8 STM Lens ( great lens overall specially for tight conditions, equal to 35mm on a full frame sensor),
SanDisk Extreme Pro (Also have an Extreme as a back up),
RODE VideoMicro (Recommend),
OAproda batteries (recommend),
Adobe suite (save yourself the time and hassle of the free apps, this was an unexpected but necessary and now welcome expense, lightroom classic and Premier just make life easy),
K&F ND filter( helps with managing over exposure), Amazon Basics UV lens (swap when ND not in use),
basic tripod,
GorillaPod 3k kit (the legs are prone to pressure cracks),
Wish List:
323 quick release system ( swapping between GorillaPod and tripod is not fun),
Portable Light Panel (Night time video and Photo
telephoto Lens with image stabilization likely 70-200mm
My experience: beginner
I chose to write this to help people make an educated decision.
Reasons why i would want to upgrade:
Not water resistant ( makes sense that it is missing at this price point)
C-log ( expansive dynamic range and wide exposure latitude- provides more data to work with in post production, only high end DSLR's currently have this option)
Reasons why not to upgrade: The additional bells and whistles come at a big cost and increase in weight. The weight would reduce my ability to shoot for an extended period of time. Additionally, If the camera was worth significantly more, It would deter me from taking the camera with me on everyday adventures.
Need: I wanted to learn to vlog and photograph. I would primarily be capturing footage in cramped area (soccer stadium), with a lot of chaos( drunk soccer fans), in events that would last the majority of the day (tailgate before and after match). I needed something light, versatile, with decent battery life. That could capture video and photo in a range of lighting conditions.
Photo:
Great quality. The tripod combined with the eos app is godly, allows you to take the photo with out causing movement. Long exposure shots is where it is at.
Video:
The quality is good but the missing image stabilization is noticeable. Make sure to pair this with a lens with image stabilization and quiet focus.Small and light weight, I can film most of the day without any real strain. The additional batteries were a steal and enhanced my experience exponentially. The gorilla pod helps me keep a grip on the camera and get video i would otherwise not be able to get but the plastic used is prone to cracks and so I don't trust my equipment on it anymore.
Audio:
Just buy a Rode mic, no need for the pro versions the quality is fine with videomicro. My audio sounded fine until it was rendered and uploaded to youtube. I experienced low audio and had to crank it up in the SL2 audio settings.
Learning Curve: Point and shoot in auto everything is cake. Manual requires a little more effort but makes your photos and video much better. I suggest learning about white balance, shutter speed, aperture, iso, Raw files and post production (loaded subject). Learn, apply and repeat.

It’s missing a few bells and whistles...no built in horizon leveling or focus peaking. Those are the only things I’ve really noticed that I would use from time to time if they were there.
Video quality is great, the low light performance can always be improved with faster lens. When compared to the t77i or some of the more expensive “step ups” I just can’t see how the extra cost is justified. For the price, at the time of this review, I just don’t think this camera can be beat.
***2 YEAR UPDATE***
Have used this camera now for 2 years and in that time I purchased a Canon 6D Mark 2. I put this one up for sale and never had any offers on it so I decided to just keep it. Was the best decision I’ve made. I still, constantly use this one for work (need something smaller and portable but still offers nice photo quality) and it’s just easier to use (it’s simpler) so if I’m in a hurry or don’t have time to deal with the more complicated menu of the 6D2. I also put this camera on a painters pile to “aerial” shots for work and I would never do that with the 6D2. So whether this is your main camera or a secondary one I’m positive you’ll find good use for it.
