"Lots of great tips and a philosophy that I remember all the time. This book stuck with me. It's more than the usual guidance I get from my health care providers and it makes so much sense!" - Michelle (verified purchaser). Stephen Ponder was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes at age 9 and grew to become one of the world's leading endocrinologists. Sugar Surfing teaches anyone how to manage in a dynamic way following a course of self-experimentation. The woefully outdated static approach that most every doctor and CDE teach is based on adherence to ratios and correction factors which more often than not make little sense and produce less than satisfactory results. *** Register for updates and frequent lessons at sugarsurfing.com Available in paperback and all ebook formats. Editorial Reviews

Review

"You'll notice a trend in the books I've recommended so far: They're all written by people who actually lives with diabetes themselves. Dr. Ponder is no different -- he's managed type 1 for decades and he's an endocrinologist, which makes this a great book for people managing this form of the disease themselves.

He's combined his real-life experience with his hard-earned medical degree to produce a guide to managing your blood sugar and insulin doses with today's technology. Having an insulin pump and a continuous glucose monitor (CGM) doesn't make managing type 1 diabetes "easy" by any means, and Ponder knows that. In many ways, it becomes far more complicated because you have far more options and far more expectations.

This book is designed to help you make the most of today's technology while tackling that constantly fluctuating and ever-sensitive wave of your blood sugar."

Best desicion I’ve ever made!

Best desicion I’ve ever made!
I can’t say enough good things about this. No, I am not a patient of Dr. Ponder (the author) and no I’m not getting any compensation from writing this review. I just so strongly believe this is finally the thing that will give me the tightest control I’ve ever had! I bought the book a few months ago and took a long time to read it. That was a mistake! I was quite apprehensive about beginning because I thought I would fail, like many of the other ways of management I’ve tried. But after only ONE day of surfing, my BGs seemed incredibly more tame! Now, it’s been about 10days since I’ve began and my BGs look like they haven’t changed all day! Even after my creamer filled cofffe, bowl of cereal, sand which and chips for lunch!I will tell you this, this way of management will be much more difficult without the use of a CGM. My Dexcom has been my best friend these past few days! Check it Out! It WILL work for you! Even with a high carb diet.I’ve added a photo of my CGM trend graph on the first day of surfing and on the most recent day. Check out the difference!

I am currently re-reading Sugar Surfing and have bought a copy for our certified diabetes educator. It had so much information and want to continue to hone my 'surfing' skills. Our 7yo daughter is T1D and two years after a year of getting a handle on management basics and using a CGM, I was thrilled to hear about Dr. Ponder's book. We were already, intuitively, surfing a bit, with our CGM. But, attending one of Dr. Ponder's seminars and reading the book have put us on much more stable ground and made us more capable user of the diabetes technologies available to us. The book is informative, easy to read and understand, nonjudgmental and thankful, very encouraging! He doesn't lay out his approach without also compassionately sharing how long it has taken him to refine his own skills. If you want step by step instructions or a formula, you probably aren't ready for this approach. If you (or someone you care for) are newly diagnosed, you may need to gain your equilibrium, first, but put this book on your "to read" list! Even his core diabetes knowledge was helpful. I feel like I have a deeper understanding of some of the physiologic aspects of diabetes that make the decisions in surfing logical.

We are getting our 7year old on board and anticipate she will one day, sooner rather than later, be able to surf alone. The image of riding waves, etc. is actually helpful for visual folks who don't like numbers, per se. And, even though water logged Midwesterners like us don't surf, we have found the analogy can be changed up and nuanced to make sense to her. It won't hurt to mention that her A1C was down 0.9 points over the last three months. We credit our new found skills and confidence, in part, to this book~

This e-book is a great addition to my diabetes library!. The author goes over best-management practices concerning pump, CGM and manual (finger stick) blood glucose monitoring. Some might be well-known procedures but after years of dealing with T1 diabetes I adopted a couple of bad habits that the book corrected. Sugar surfing is not for a diabetic who just wants their edno to set the pump and then go on their merry way. This is not a set-it-and-forget-it process. If you don't want to be bothered with being proactive in your diabetes management, this book isn't for you. If you don't use a CGM, same thing since most of your management decisions are based on the CGM readings and trend lines displayed on your pump. The author is an endo who has had T1 diabetes for 50 yrs so he has some experience dealing with T1. New concepts include glancing at the CGM trendline 20-30 times a day and deciding whether or not to act by micro-carbing or micr-bolusing. You're not chasing the numbers, rather trying to head off hypos and hypers and minimizing the spikes. He goes over evaluating last night's trendline to determine if your basal rate is correct. There are a few sections concerning being a parent of a T1 child and the ramifications of having a T1 child or teenager. Overall it's a great book for those of us who want to be more proactive in diabetes management, have lower A1Cs without crashing and maintain your health during the years to come.

Awesome book. What an education! It has saved me from diabetic frustration, depression, and self management in the vast unknown world of sudden onset of adult diabetes. I didn’t know what I was trying to do was “Sugar Surfing” and doing it all wrong without the right tools. My dietician turned me on to Dr. Ponder’s book. The education has been enormous, the light has been turned on and management, timing, and understanding how fast carb intake works vs how much time insulin takes to brings down blood sugar levels are huge concepts. It will allow me to function at work and in daily life so much better without the many drastic highs and uncontrollable lows that crash me into oblivion! Thank you Dr. Ponder. Amazing, life changing, practical book. Anna Ballosingh-Picard

Quick read. I've had diabetes for over 50 years. The first 100 pages was a walk down memory lane with antidotes about what it was like having T1D back in the 70s and 80s, and the evolution of treatment, technologies, and understanding of the disease. The rest of the book describes the dynamic approach to blood sugar control (sugar surfing) through the use of continuous glucose monitoring and pumping. While I agree with the concept (I have been using a very similar approach even before owning a pump), the author fails to describe details on how to actually achieve the tight control he touts. Rather, he implies tight control can be achieved using this method through trial and error. I recommend this book as an illustration of the control one can aspire to achieve through the use of a pump and CGM. For more particulars and step-by-step guidance on how to setup and individualized test pump settings needed in order to implement the concepts put forth in Sugar Surfing, read Pumping Insulin by Walsh and Roberts.

As a direct result of reading this book, my blood sugars have improved: my 7-day average is around 160 instead of 215. The title captures the basic idea well: you have to "watchfully" ride the waves of your blood sugars. For the author, this means continually checking his continuous glucose monitor -- for me, it means taking 7 measurements per day instead of 2-4.

MUCH of what he says, however, is stuff I've tried to tell my own doctors. My own doctors just say, "Hmm, that's weird," and don't really believe me, so it was NICE to see everything I've been saying for fifteen years right there in print. That was worth the price of the book right there, but like I say, his attitude of "surf," i.e., watch the waves as you ride them, is actually making a difference for me. I highly recommend this book for doctors as well as patients!
