Great flow, silent, easy set-up. The usual annoyances priming it, but once you get the hang of priming Eheim canister filters, it's a cinch. Awesome diversity of filter media available or make your own. Rock-solid connectors and such, not a leak to be found if you assemble everything properly. Never had one of these leak in many years (knock wood). Eheim media can sometimes be hard to find for unusual stuff like peat, but there's always someone online who stocks it.
The German big green can is the original canister filter, practically unchanged since it was designed in the 60s. Works perfectly. Ideal for planted tanks as it has a somewhat lower flow rate than many similar units, but more than enough (augmented with a Cobalt Aquatics powerhead in my "river" tank just for current and an extra sponge filter). Media flexibility can't be beat. Not the cheapest on the market, but kind of the all time champ and will just pretty much run forever. My 10 year old 2215 has been rather abused (like not cleaning it for a year but it was still working) and still works like new. Could probably use a new impeller by now...
Love Eheim Classic canisters and will continue to use them on any new big tank I build. I highly recommend adding one of those nice big pre-filter units Eheim sells to the intake. I have one on all 3 intakes in my tank. Adds super mechanical filtration and will keep the main filter media looking practically clean for MONTHS.
Reliable as a hammer. Clean, simple, easy to service design. As smooth and quiet and German-(over)engineered as a BMW. Indestructible as far as I've tested over a decade with another one of these. Media a bit spendy but lasts. I mean, you really don't need to replace the blue pads or mechanical ceramic as often as suggested. Just rinse 'em out good in a pail of tank water when doing a change. They last for years if treated kindly, only the white polishing pads and carbon if you use it (I don't), and occasionally the Substrat need to be replaced as scheduled in my experience... I change the blue pads and Mech every couple years or so for the heck of it. They still look new...
There are a lot of canister filters out there, each with its pros and cons. If you're starting out or have been frustrated with other models, get one of these. It's like learning to play the guitar with a Martin acoustic. Whatever else you end up using, you can now compare it to the old gold standard.
