I paired this with a Sennheiser Game One headset and couldn't be happier with my decision and highly recommend to anyone willing to shell out the money.
*You HAVE to manually set up the surround sound per the instructions and select the correct default devices or it will NOT WORK.
The main selling feature here is that Sennheiser has come up with simulated 7.1 surround sound (with a plethora of features) to compete with dolby's. Having used both types by sennheiser I can say that this is both better and likely not worth the price. Many lower end games do better without 7.1 enabled (fortnite) while some games give better positional data with it enabled (Overwatch) and this gives you the ability to turn it on and off rather quickly. When you turn off 7.1 surround sound, you still get the games surround sound so it really comes down to playing with settings in each game.
The larger benefit is being able to tune the reverberation to indoor or outdoor games to add to the positional accuracy. In Overwatch for example it's much easier to pinpoint that and enemy is 30 degrees to the right and above you with this enabled.
I'm currently using this to drive my Hyper X CloudX headset. It even does ok driving my Massdrop/Sennheiser HD6xx headset.
Having said that the unit sounds fantastic. 7.1 and reverb for movies sounds like you're in an actual cinema. It's so freaky to remove your headphones and realize you're not listening to speakers... I love the fact that you can store presets and changing between stereo and surround on the fly. Wish Sennheiser did a unit like this with more power aimed for "audiophiles".
I had high hopes for this amp. I used a Beyerdynamic MMX300 headset (currently considered the best consumer gaming headset on the market in terms of audio quality and mic quality) and Razer Thresher Ultimate 7.1 headset. Both of these sounds considerably better on my Alienware M17 laptop's built-in 3.5mm plug than on the Sennheiser GSX 1200 PRO. When I say "considerably better" I mean night and day difference.
I used Dolby surround sound and Dolby 7.1 sound tests on YouTube (yes I know YouTube reduces audio quality with their codecs). I was excited to run a quick test as soon as I received this Sennheiser amp. What I hear disappointed me.
The Sennheiser GSX 1200 PRO had a smaller soundstage and less spatial separation. My Alienware produced a much more realistic 3D environment than the GSX 1200 PRO. Night and day difference. I really didn't notice any separation with the GSX 1200 PRO (I was shocked).
The quality of the audio was far superior on my Alienware. Better clarity, better precision and better balance with trebble, mids and bass with the Alienware.
I spent about 30 minutes researching online trying to figure out if I was missing some settings. I installed the Sennheiser updater and the newest firmware. No difference.
I also couldn't get my mics to work with the Sennheiser GSX 1200 PRO amp. I adjusted all my setting in Windows 10, Audacity and Skype - to try to get any mic sound. The only way I could was if I plugged the headset directly into the mic input on the GSX 1200 PRO - but it was low in volume.
Maybe I missed something, but I wasn't gonna spend more time figuring this out. Back it goes!

In games, the sound is nice and crisp plus the 7.1 surround sound makes it so much better when you're in an open-world game.
I would recommend this to anyone with at least a mid-high end pc to enhance their gaming/music listening experience. If you have a lower-end one you might as well spend it on better GPU, but if you got extra $ to spend, definitely give this a try.
What it does do is act as a 7.1 USB soundcard that gives you surround sound in stereo headphones, which is very neat and pretty unique. And as it does so as a hardware device you can use it in Linux. One of those things where I didn't realise how cool the concept was until I started using it. There's a setting that lets you toggle between 3D audio and stereo audio which I think they added just so you can hear how flat stereo seems compared to their emulated surround sound.
Personally the audio quality from this even listening to music seems a massive improvement from my motherboard soundcard, although I imagine that's subjective.
