Product Description
So you've decided that the bass is the instrument for you. You're putting in the countless hours of practice, building your repertoire, and jamming with friends to tighten up your set in preparation for your onstage debut. The best-in-class durability, sound, and playability of the 200 lineup makes it the ideal instrument to help you take that crucial first step down the road to being a serious musician.
From the manufacturer
Yamaha BB-Series Bass Guitars
Yamaha's storied BB series of bass guitars delivers the superb sound and build quality that this series is known for in a smaller body with even better playability. Featuring a Alder/Maple/Alder construction for quicker transmission of sound from the strings to the body and neck, a firmer 6-bolt miter neck joint for improved stability, and custom-wound pickups that achieve higher output gain while retaining the classic BB voicing, the new BB basses are a testament to our commitment to musical excellence.
Yamaha has always sought to offer nothing less than a pure bass guitar. Forgoing passing technical fads in favor in proven technologies and production techniques, the BB Series allows you to build your own sound rather than defining one for you. These latest models continue this tradition of reliable excellence in superbly crafted bass guitars that you can depend on to give you the sound you need, in any situation you throw at it.

Built for the Working BassistWe've spent decades working closely with artists to help us forge a clear vision of what working professionals demand of their bass in every capacity. By incorporating this invaluable, real-world experience and insight into practical approaches to the BB series' design, construction, and ultimately its legendary tone, this collaboration has been the impetus behind this iconic instrument's continuing evolution as the hardest working bass in the business. |
Penetrating SoundYamaha has worked closely with some of the most prolific bassists in the business to craft that unmistakable BB sound— constantly evaluating their ideas and feedback to create the right sound for the music of the moment. The latest series features a miter neck joint that has won praise in the Billy Sheehan Signature/ Attitude Limited III lineup, by increasing the efficiency of vibration transmission to the body for a more resonant, organic feel and tone. |
A New Take on a Classic DesignThe new lineup has undergone a significant redesign with subtle contour changes and body weight reduction made out of consideration to playability and comfort, while still retaining the classic silhouette of the BB body/ head design. The differences are subtle, but you'll definitely feel them. The new models also feature standard sized pickups for the first time in a BB, for more convenient customization or replacement. |

---|---|---|---|
Alder/Maple/Alder BodyThe new BB features an Alder/Maple/Alder multi-laminated body construction. The hard maple center increases body stiffness and accentuates midrange to cut through the mix of a band, and allows a more uniform transmission of vibrations between the body and the maple neck for unparalleled resonance and sustain. (BB Pro, BB700 Series). |
6-bolt miter neck jointMiter bolting holds the neck closer and tighter to the body fusing these two separate components into one. Compared to a conventional bolt-on joint, miter bolting offers more efficient transfer of string vibration throughout the body, for improved sustain and outstanding resonance that brings every note to life. (BB Pro, BB700, BB400 Series). |
Custom-Wound PickupsBB's custom-wound pickups fit standard pickup cavities and feature a medium-high output with vintage voicing for great tone in any setting. BB basses come with pickups selected specifically to match the distinct character of each model in the series, delivering a uniquely versatile sound while retaining the classic BB tone. |
Convertible Bridge & SaddleBB basses incorporate 'Diagonal Body Thru Stringing' which significantly reduces stress on the strings while transferring vibration to the body reliably and efficiently. The bridge comes equipped with a convertible saddle that can be adjusted to 2 different angles for more precise tonal shaping and feel. |

There's no compromise here between this bass and a Fender P-Bass, a PJ, or anything else that's in that vintage mold. This is above the Fender American Standard (Professional, whatever they are calling it lately) level of quality. It's level with any top of the line production Fender easily. You won't find any poorly cut nuts, tooling marks, or finish issues from the factory on these.
The best features of the BBP34 over competitors like high end Fenders is, IMO, the overall higher level of build quality, and the really full low and midrange tone. It sits really really well in a band mix. These differ from Fenders in that the body is Alder/Maple/Alder and traditionally that's what gives them the power the BB series has always been known for. I think the pickups are great and are voiced exceptionally well for vintage type bass tones, but they are standard size and shape in case you want to drop in something else.
One last note - Amazon ships these in their factory shipping box, but I had no issues. The hardshell case the bass came packaged in was fine, unblemished and totally safe when it arrived at my door.
I would recommend this over any comparably priced bass, and to anyone who wants a passive, vintage-style bass that does the classic P-Bass thing exceedingly well but offers more than any other manufacturer can offer at the price. This is a lifetime type instrument for me, I believe. Like so many are still playing BB's from decades ago because they are so functional and versatile, I think this is going to be an old friend for me one day too.

In addition to sounding great I have positives on the look (coffee burst), weight, balance, tuning pegs, bridge, satin neck finish (no sanding needed), and tonal range across the two pickups. On the latter I can go to the mid detent and they cancel hum even.
Accessories: I have found super helpful the following: A wide padded comfortable shoulder strap, a stand, a fret wrap, a set of flat wound strings, some cheap Amazon 9V batteries, a clip-on tuner, couple good cables, solid music stand and a reverb pedal. And an amplifier, goes without saying. In order the reverb and shoulder strap are most important.
The active electronics work great -- 3 knob EQ only when the toggle is on -- but I keep forgetting to toggle it off when I finish playing so to avoid draining more 9V batteries I just play it with passive pickups and keep the battery out on the desk; it goes in in a matter of a seconds.
Finally a shout out to YouTubers who put great learning content up for bass. You haven't lived until you've spent four hours running scale patterns with Adam Neely, seriously. It can be overwhelming so also NTS don't get overwhelmed.
Mostly I should say this bass does a great job of getting out of way so the experience of playing it is about the music. It sounds *really* good.

The pros:
* (from amazon) shipped in original factory box. I am surprised it made it in one piece since the box was significantly damaged. But not a scratch on the bass. So, the shipping container was really durable, testament to yamaha I suppose?
* the bass feels balanced and the action was set correctly. It has a really nice tone
* the frets are cut perfectly and laid seamlessly
The cons:
* I can't really tell the difference between the P/J pickups. Is this because the pickups aren't that distinct? Or is my setup not geared towards reflecting the distinction?
* no case included, Yamaha usually includes cases

I decided to order another. The price now is more than double what I paid, and double what music stores charge. Average price for a 234 is $429 and a 235 is $499.
