This text book is a fabulous resource to learn about the music industry and how to be a manager. I found it very east to read and is geared for a beginner with little knowledge about the music business because it give you step by step instructions on everything such as contracts, budgeting, how to write a business plan and general basics about how to manage. I had to get this book for my Graduate class in Arts and Entertainment Management and will be keeping it to use over and over again as I work in this field.

I use this book as a textbook for my college class that I teach on Artist Management. It is excellent. The author has done a good job updating it. My only complaint is that more space should be devoted to functioning in the "indie" world, which is where most artists spend their time. Many indies will never have the issue of having a manager who ALSO has a business manager. If you reach that level, then you're doing better than 99.9% of artists in the world. Most artists just want to get paid after a gig. So, I feel like each chapter should have a section for "major label world" and "indie world". Other than that, the book is comprehensive and accurate. It is an excellent authoritative source from which to teach.

This book has really good content. It’s an extremely important and useful read for aspiring (and experienced) artist managers alike, as well as for artists. My one gripe, and it’s a big one, is a dig on the publishers who felt the need to typeset the book in 10 or 11pt font, leaving 3.5” of (overall) margin space on the sides of the page. I’m not kidding, this does a major disservice to this otherwise excellent book. I have excellent vision, but this is a real pain. And at the cost, I’m annoyed to maybe have to purchase a kindle version just to be able to read this. Room in the margins for notes is good, but this could just be a bigger font and less margin and still have room to spare. Sorry author, it’s a great read so far... but I hope your publisher takes notice for the next printing and edition.

It's an excellent overview for aspiring artists and managers alike, and it's full of advice and wisdom. Anyone studying this business would do well to begin their focused education here, if only to establish a working vocabulary for the industry. The end of each chapter provides an extensive list of resources for continued reading as well. If you read this, also read the books listed in the resource section of each chapter for an extensive self-education. There's nothing quite like a common vocabulary for efficient communication between all the facets of the music industry.

This is a great book that explains what an artist manager is supposed to do and not required to do. It is a must read for any artist or manager that doesn't understand the vital and practical applications of artist management. It explains in detail why managers are integral to the artist's success no matter what their professional level may be.

This book is incredible. All the important elements are in there, very easy to read and to understand. The font is big enough and the chapters well defined.
I really appreciate that they give lots of concrete examples too.
