My workflow for a several day shoot with my Canon 5D Mark IV is to transfer the video and photo files to the Gnarbox 2 by attaching a fast USB C high speed card reader to the Gnarbox 2.0 and using the onboard menu settings on the Gnarbox 2 to backup the entire contents of the CF and SD cards. I then go into the Safekeep app on my iPhone or iPad to preview in full screen and full-frame rate playback and delete the videos that I do not want. I then move to the Selects app on the iPad or iPhone to create previews and rate the images on the Gnarbox 2. Then one needs only to tap on Sort by Rating in the Selects app and delete the unrated images from the Gnarbox SSD. At this point you have now organized and saved to the Gnarbox 2 all of the videos and photos that you wish to keep, and you can confidently delete them from the CF or SSD card freeing it up for another use.
The Gnarbox 2.0 is incredibly fast. For example, I backed up over 50 GB of movies and still images to the Gnarbox 2 in under three minutes using a high speed USB C card reader attached to the Gnarbox. For previewing and selecting videos and images, I typically use a USB C connection between my iPad and the Gnarbox, although wireless is acceptable but not as fast. In the field I use LumaFusion with the Gnarbox 2.0 to do a rough edit of my video and still images and the Gnarbox 2.0 can be used either wirelessly or via a USB C connection to the iPad for this purpose. It is worth noting that with the Gnarbox connected via either mode to the iPad, browsing and previewing videos in LumaFusion stored on the Gnarbox is very very fast, and until one drags a clip/image into the LumaFusion timeline the file is not transferred from the Gnarbox 2 to the iPad's internal storage. This all makes for a fast and efficient workflow for the Gnarbox 2 with LumaFusion.
Battery life of the Gnarbox 2.0 depends on the tasks that one is doing with the device. Transcoding can be slow and consumes a lot off energy. Fortunately, the M-JPEG files obtained with my Canon 5D Mark IV, while huge, are also largely uncompressed and do not require transcoding. For other files that might require transcoding for optimal playback on the iPad in LumaFusion or for preview in Safekeep, I would transcode these on a laptop/desktop computer to save time and battery life. Gnarbox claims 3-6 hours of battery life and I have found that to be quite accurate. It is also notable that the Gnarbox comes with a powerful charger capable of charging the Li battery to 100% in 2 hours.
There is no doubt that for the workflow and purposes that I have described above in detail the Gnarbox 2.0 is a fine replacement for a laptop computer and far easier to take in the field than a computer. The Gnarbox hardware is excellent. The Gnarbox software (Safekeep and Selects) are adequate but could certainly use further development (which I understand is exactly what the Gnarbox team are currently working on). For example, at the moment, video can be previewed in full screen mode and real time in the Safekeep app, but to do this for images one must move to the Selects app, create image previews, rate the images, sort by rating, and then delete those not wanted. It would be far more efficient if all of this could be done in one app.
Finally, I want to comment on Gnarbox Customer Support. In a word, it is excellent!!! Late Saturday afternoon I wrote Customer Support with a question and issue. I had a reply back by Sunday morning, and this was followed by further exchanges throughout the weekend all of which proved very helpful to me in understanding how to adapt the software to my workflow. I have rarely experienced the quality of customer support that I received from Gnarbox.
I highly recommend this product to photographers and videographers who spend a lot of time in the field and are looking for a very fast, very portable backup and editing solution.
Updated review: After some initial frustration with this not working I was finally able to get it to boot up. Took it on a trip with me and used it to backup my SD cards at the end of each day. Used the app to cull shots and for rating and adding keywords. Imported some photos into Lightroom on my phone for editing. Generally speaking works as expected. My only complaint at this point is that I wish I had gotten a larger hard drive (I purchased the 256). I was only away for 7 days and I can see this filling up quick on longer trips.
Edit: In an attempt not to be hasty, I have worked with their tech support to help them troubleshoot their problem. We've tried resetting the stack. Removing the battery. Manually connecting. Connecting via phone. etc. I cannot stress enough, DO NOT BUY this. They know the software is buggy and unstable and if you can't even configure the device, how could you possibly trust it to preserve your images or content. Learn from my misfortune and avoid this.
