Full-frame E-mount Telephoto Lens

The full-frame E-mount FE 70-300mm F4.5 – 5.6 G OSS telephoto zoom lens features a state-of-the-art optical design including four aspherical glass elements, two ED (Extra-low Dispersion) glass elements and Sony’s Nano AR coating, which all work together to effectively suppress spherical aberration, distortion, and chromatic aberration. Together with Optical SteadyShot image stabilization, ensures beautiful high-resolution results for both still and video shooting.

Features

Full-frame 70-300mm G Series F4.5–5.6 G Telephoto zoom

Sony's G-Series lenses are designed for maximum descriptive power, maintaining excellent peripheral light characteristics and maximizing contrast even at the edges of the frame. The SEL70300G offers high zoom and magnification for full-frame E-mount cameras equivalent to 70-300mm F4.5–5.6. In addition, when mounted to APS C cameras, the focal range can reach 105-450mm offering reach beyond previously available E-mount lenses.

Nano AR Coating with nano-precision structure

Sony’s original Nano AR Coating technology produces a lens coating that features a precisely defined regular nano-structure that allows accurate light transmission while effectively suppressing reflections that can cause flare and ghosting. The reflection suppression characteristics of the Nano AR Coating are superior to conventional anti-reflective coatings, including coatings that use an irregular nano-structure, providing a notable improvement in clarity, contrast, and overall image quality.

Optical SteadyShot image stabilization

Built-in Optical SteadyShot image stabilization helps to reduce camera shake, particularly in telephoto, close-up, and low-light situations where camera shake is most likely to affect image quality. OSS makes it easier to capture clear images when shooting handheld. A convenient on/off switch - on the lens itself - can be used to control internal image stabilization which speeds up operation as there is no need to access the camera menu.

Features

Class-leading close-up focusing capability less than 3’ (0.9m)

The SEL70300G telephoto zoom lens also features class-leading close-up performance, with a minimum focusing distance of less than 3 feet (0.9m) and a maximum magnification of 0.31x, making it an ideal choice for tele-macro photography. This outstanding close-up performance also factors into the lens’ excellent corner-to-corner sharpness.

9-blade circular aperture

The 9-blade circular aperture forms a nearly perfect circle to create a pleasing and beautifully round background defocus or bokeh effect, especially when the lens is wide open.

2x ED (Extra-low Dispersion) glass elements

As focal lengths get longer, lenses built with conventional optical glass have difficulties with chromatic aberration, and as a result images suffer from lower contrast, lower color quality, and lower resolution. To counter such problems, 2x ED glass elements are included in the SEL70300G. It dramatically improves chromatic aberration at telephoto ranges, and provides superior contrast across the entire image, even at large aperture settings.

Features

4x Aspherical elements control spherical aberration

The SEL70300G has an innovative optical design to achieve clear, high-quality images by effectively minimizing distortion and chromatic aberration. A double-Gauss configuration effectively suppresses field curvature and distortion, while four precisely placed aspherical elements control spherical aberration for excellent optical characteristics right out to the image periphery, rendering the subject with superior sharpness.

Sophisticated, solid and reliable

The exterior metal barrel and sealed buttons and rings deliver outstanding operability and reliability in a design that resists the intrusion of dust and moisture which helps to ensure reliable operation in harsh outdoor conditions. Designed for reliability in a wide range of environments, the metal mount adds a sophisticated feel as well as solid durability.

Linear actuator achieve fast, smooth, quiet autofocus

A linear actuator and an inner focus mechanism are used for focus drive, resulting in fast, smooth, quiet focus operation. Lens noise pickup can be a problem when shooting movies, but with this lens operation is so smooth and quiet that autofocus can be used for shooting movies as well as stills.

Features

Enhanced operability w/ direct control

The SEL70300G features convenient direct buttons and switches to enhance the ease and operability. These include a focus hold button, focus mode switch, focus range limiter, Optical SteadyShot switch and zoom lock switch.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Strong Native Sony Lens
Reviewed in the United States on June 15, 2018
This is the first telephoto lens I've owned, and I'm very happy with the product. I own one other Sony lens: the 90mm f2.8 Macro, which is by far the sharpest lens I've ever used. This lens isn't too far behind.

    Image quality: 10/10
The images I've taken are very sharp, even at 300mm. Corner sharpness is really solid. Slight vignetting effect, but it's easily corrected in Lightroom. Lens flare is very well controlled, and I've not noticed any chromatic aberrations. I haven't noticed anything that would reduce my satisfaction with image quality.

    Build quality: 9/10
Solid construction. Doesn't feel cheap at all. The focus ring could be smoother though. It's nothing like the 90mm Macro lens (which has my favorite adjustment ring). The zoom ring is pretty tight and not as smooth as I'd like, but apparently not tight enough as the lens will still creep if you walk around with the lens facing downwards (more on that later).

    Usability/Convenience: 8/10
Everything seems to be in the right spot. It's got switches for AF/MF, focus limiting, and OSS. It also has a reprogrammable focus hold button and a zoom lock switch. The zoom lock switch isn't very conveniently placed, but what really irritates me is that it can only lock the lens at 70mm. This is a serious inconvenience for me, but might not bother some people. If you don't use the lock, the lens will creep quite considerably, so I'd recommend always using it.
The OSS is very good. I don't have any issues taking photos at slower shutter speeds. I've taken plenty of hand-held, 300mm 1/60s (or slower) photos that turned out to be perfectly usable.

    Price: N/A
This is subjective, and totally up to you and your budget. For me it was well worth it. For people on a tight budget, it might not be.

I've included images, and each has has the focal length included (something which people should really consider doing more often...). The photos are not cropped unless specified, and I didn't do any processing/editing in Lightroom. Lens correction profiles were not applied. All photos were taken with the Sony a7 II.

5.0 out of 5 stars Awesome. Sharp! Versatile! Doubles as a Macro.
Reviewed in the United States on August 7, 2019
I have had and loved this lens for two years at this writing. It is an awesome lens.

On my Sony A6300 "half-frames," the lens is equivalent to 105-450. The first time I took it out was to a prairie for pictures of flora. It was overcast so my ISOs were on the high side, plus it was windy so everything was waving wildly. The autofocus performed flawlessly, no lag, and since I was using it in closeup mode and I had read most of the reviews I half expected some missed shots. Not a one. Just flawless performance even under less than ideal conditions.

I use a monopod with a Vee or Wye shooter's rifle rest. The lens is absolutely a chunk, weighs 2 pounds, twice as much as the bodies, but on my second body I always have my Sony 18-105mm F4 G OSS that weighs a pound, so I'm not unused to fairly heavy glass on relatively light bodies.

Between the 18-105 and the (equivalent) 105-450 I have perfect overlap, enormous reach, and outstanding versatility. I purchased the DSLRKIT Metal Tripod Mount Ring for Sony FE 70-300mm f/4.5-5.6. The ring is $pendy but so far as I am concerned worth every dime, keeping the lens balanced on the tripod and not overloading the flange.
