1. the cover both protects the keyboard in transit, and converts to a stand - just the tiniest bit of jiggling within the kickstand tab with my heavy iPad 2 but it supported both horizontal and landscape and I definitely have enough confidence to use it. It would stay in if accidently brushed up against. The stand itself is very stable. To use as a stand without keyboard you have to remove the keyboard part way to unlock/extend the stand - but then the keyboard can be slipped right back in. Actually that's a nice feature - that kickstand isn't going to accidently flip out in transit. Horizontal on the phone is a bit of a steep pitch for viewing, but thought it was optimum vertically I have a very slim silicone protector on my phone but not sure a heavy cased smartphone would fit? Would be worth asking. It slips from each side and comfortably "seats" into place.
2. price point (I purchased it for under $12) making this a fantastic / no-brainer opportunity to see how it works with different devices. and if I'd even use a keyboard for my phone - I think at this point I am going to LOVE it.
3. really feels like quality - the product, the packaging and a great instruction manual that even goes over the keyboards for each application (android/windows/iOS). Mine did come a slight bit scuffed - think it was a return, but it cleaned up and everything appears to be in great working order so no dings for that.
4. came charged - the button to slide on the power is on the left, and if you hold down two keys (battery - clearly designated on the key and function) it tells you how much battery is left by color and how many flashes of the light. A pairing button is also on the right hand side, and a slide to flip between the three operating system types is on the bottom. simple, everything worked as expected. some issues with identifying pairing pairing - on my ipad it says Zagg Universal, but my android gave me numbers before switching to the name - I figured it out. Comes with a little USB charging cable, too.
5. keyboard really impressed - as another reviewer noted, it is a little loud, keys are just a touch stiff and slippy (I have dry fingers) but the keyboard itself has little rubber grips so it didn't slide on a glass desktop. After a little bit of typing I found myself adjusting - wrists comfortable on the table - i like the angle! Has a normal delete key, enter key, all those things I expect. Mostly though it is just so darn functional - there are several keys that make it useful to not have to use touch things - like volume up and down and mute (worked for both devices, a home button, the ability to use mouse keys to navigate on web browsing AND i could even mouse to an area of text I wanted to copy and holding down shift key it would highlight to where I ended with the cursor - right for characters/words, and down for paragraphs! copy/paste keys clearly marked. I just wasn't expecting that and it is so much nicer than trying to highlight things with my fat finger on either device.
6. super light. inconspicuous logo. and, it does fit nice in backpack - that angle bit nests against textbook edges.
I can't speak to battery longevity as of yet. Of course, there are in addition to its size (it's not as long as my airbook keyboard but about an inch longer from top to bottom) some other features that can be found on other keyboards. For example, no backlit keys, the case wants to show fingerprints, and no usb port to try to add, say a gooseneck usb light or charge up your device from the keyboard battery. But at the price point this is just a fantastic option to stay light, and utilize your smaller devices (and different types) and make them more useful on the go.
Will it replace my laptop...well, probably not entirely. Being two piece, it's not going to do well on my lap in our seminar lectures where there is no table top or in bed and I do love my trackpad, but as far as noise? I don't think it types any louder that my air with one of those cushy keyboard covers. In fact, hmm. In comparing, it may be quieter. It's actually the space bar that has the "clack". The letter keys are actually pretty quiet. Interesting. And the phone in vertical mode is usable for writing. Yeah, it would do when I need to really travel lite (I'm talking to you ULCC carriers!)
I don't expect to use this a whole lot right away, but if I have any issues with it in the future I'll come back and report. Overall though, this is definitely a score imho.
I'm typing this on the Zagg. The keys are a little mushy, and aren't dimensional, but for chicklets they have a lovely stroke and they're well spaced so typing feels natural. I think the mushiness helps, really, because it feels more like a full stroke than chicklets usually do. I haven't gotten fatigued, or felt my fingertips getting sore or anything. The shifts, enter, and numbers are in natural places. The backspace ("delete") is a little far off, but no worse than on a laptop. The rest feel like a real keyboard, including good F and J home markers.
It's amazing that this thing is so small and light! There are no home and end keys, but it's easy enough to use CTRL + arrow instead. Um.... Can't think of another negative. Oh. I had a time understanding from the instructions (I not only type, but actually read the manual) for opening the stand. I was supposed to push the opposite way. Push UP (towards your face if holding it like in the picture), not out. I think the case stand might be a bit light for the tablet except in a pinch, but the tablet has a case with a built in stand. The Zagg cover stand is great with my phone, however, and fits (just barely, but it fits) the phone's jelly case too. The cover slides over the keyboard really easily. I thought it would take some lining up, but it just goes right on.
And I can type really easily and go on and on about how delightful this new little gadget is. I've just edited this, and so love having the arrow keys. There are lots of special keys I haven't investigated. I don't know if I'll ever be in a position to really need them, but they're no bother and they double for function keys, which aren't for the tablet, but who knows?, might come in handy.
Love it. But I'll stop typing now that I've proven that I can! Love it.
1. The rubber pads at the four corners were gone within a few weeks. They just rubbed right off, and there were no replacements available when I wrote to Zagg about them.
2. The pairing button broke after a little over a year. It was out of warranty at that point, of course. I continued to use it with the iPad that it had all ready been paired to, and it was great. But when it came time to pair it with an updated iPad -- no dice.
I've debated buying another one, thinking that perhaps they've improved the quality, or perhaps my particular keyboard was a lemon. Either way, I'm not willing to chance another one. There are too many other options out there.
Top reviews from other countries
Keys have a nice amount of travel but they do feel a little cheap and springy. It looks nicer than it feels.
The main problem is the lack of some basics. There are shortcut keys for common actions like copy and paste, and media control, but there's no home/end/pgup/pgdn (on Android) which is an omission I find baffling. Some keys are specific to particular OS's and have no function on others, which is again odd as there are plenty of options (for example: the iOS cmd button could easily act as Start in Windows devices and Home for Android - other keyboard do this).
I bought this to replace a cheaper Anker model that had started to shed keys, and with the robust case it will certainly last longer than that one. However I do feel that it's not quite the premium device that Zagg would like it to be.
