From the manufacturer
The company Victorinox
In 1884, Karl Elsener opened his cutler’s workshop in Ibach-Schwyz. At this time Switzerland was still one of the poorer countries in Europe. In the early years Karl Elsener worked to combat poverty and unemployment in the Schwyz basin, creating jobs and helping stem the flow of emigration.
In 1891 he supplied the soldier’s knife to the Swiss Army for the first time. He went on to develop the Swiss Officer’s and Sports Knife – now the iconic Swiss Army Knife – in 1897, creating the foundation for a flourishing company that would be able to hold its own on the world stage.
From then on, his spirit of solidarity, deep roots in the region and strong commitment to solid values shaped the Victorinox company philosophy.
Quality
Victorinox assures that its products meet the highest standards in all areas and quality is never compromised, regardless of the production site.
For reasons of expertise, items are produced abroad, where the technical, staff and material resources needed for efficient manufacture can be accessed. To ensure that these products also meet the highest standards, partners are chosen carefully and the high quality standards are stringently enforced.
It is this level of quality that has allowed Victorinox to become one of the leaders in Switzerland and the rest of the world.

I was impressed by two things: this all-metal knife was THIN, and the design has been on the market since 1867.
I went stainless steel instead of the more-traditional carbon steel for lower maintenance. Stainless may be harder to sharpen than carbon steel, but when kept in a pocket the carbon steel probably will tarnish and corrode faster.
The 3-1/2" blade can be locked open from folded using only one hand--I learned the technique from Donald Hamilton's description in his Matt Helm series of spy novels. WARNING: if you cut yourself, it's your own fault! The technique of flicking open the blade using the weight of its handle has hazards. The blade comes sharp from the factory, the two knives I've purchased from Amazon are well-made, the locking mechanism is positive, and my scale tells me it weighs in at 2.72 ounces--call it three ounces (scales may vary in accuracy). Closed, the knife is 4-3/8th inches long, open it is 7-7/8ths inch long--minus the swivel lanyard loop. Every rivet in this knife has multiple purposes--nothing is wasted. Did I mention that it's thin? About three quarters thick--stack up three 25-cent coins to get an idea of how thick. The lanyard loop can be used to suspend the knife (closed, of course) or it will slip into a pocket or billfold without creating a bulge. The spear-point blade has a plain single edge--no frills, nothing wasted, an elegant exercise in minimalism.
I like this knife!
Pros:
Incredibly strong knife.
Powerful locking mechanism.
Blade is able to be sharpened correctly with CHEAP market sharpeners, due to German style. Amateur collectors less likely to accidentally ruin blade.
Thin without sacrificing a comfortable weight.
Lanyard ring proves useful.
Classic knife design.
A piece of German history.
Rugged enough to be passed down generations.
Effective cutting blade when sharpened properly.
Stunning.
Cons:
Painted metal always requires more long term upkeep if it is getting regular (EDC) type use.
I would personally prefer a fixed lanyard ring, but this is not a big issue.
Carbon steel trades strength for loss of edge holding capacity. For responsible EDC owners this should not be a problem. Personally I prefer the trade off, as it allows the blade to last longer and I regularly sharpen my blades.
Ultimately if I could only recommend a single knife, to those looking for a locking single blade folder, the Mercator Black Cat would receive that recommendation every time. It is my personal choice for EDC and it is simply an invaluable tool.
I know a couple of people that used these knives as everyday pocket knives on their farm. The amount of abuse those knives took and how well their blades held an edge is what sold me on these knives. Would highly recommend to anyone looking for a practical every day pocket knife.
