Ben Galley is a British author of dark and epic fantasy who currently lurks in Vancouver, Canada. Since publishing his Emaneska Series in 2010, Ben has released the award-winning Scarlet Star Trilogy and The Heart of Stone, the critically-acclaimed Chasing Graves Trilogy and Scalussen Chronicles, and the new Bloodwood Saga.

When he isn't conjuring up new stories or arguing the finer points of magic systems and dragon anatomy, Ben terrorises the Canadian wilds, swills Scotch single malts, and snowboards very, very badly. One day he hopes to haunt an epic treehouse in the mountains and dole out side quests to passersby.

After finishing this book I definitely wanted more. Greedy, I know. At first I wasn’t sure about the repetitiveness of the prologue but then I realized it was a great idea about twenty seconds later. I like how we got the story of how they got to that point in time and then the title of the book. I live when authors give a deeper meaning to their titles and it’s not literal. The aha! moment is great when you realize why the book is titled the way it is.

It was very well written and the detail was great. I love when I can get vivid images of what’s going on. I definitely want more of this story. There’s no slogging. It’s very well paced. I’m always a fan of prequels and having better understandings of how characters became who they are or even just getting a backstory on them. Loooooove it.

once again another wonderful adventure. though it was over in a blink it was thoroughly entertaining. I would love a standalone or even a series on what happened immediately after this.

Superb to step back into Emaneska. Plenty of nods to the rest of the Written books (Tyrfing wary of black cats...who knew) and a gripping short story to boot. This could have easily been a full on prequel book, and it would be good to expand the world more in a pre-Farden era - I like where Ben could be going with this teaser 🤞🏻

Ben Galley is a great writer, love his characterisations, the world building, the storylines which are never boring either.
This prequel is a very good stage setter for the stories to follow in The Written and Emaneska series. Recommended
