Reliable & fast contact sensor trigger w/thread
I've got HomePod Minis and Eve Energy devices so I'm using the Eve Door & Window with thread. They come with plenty of spacers to adjust the non-battery powered passive part of the contact sensor. So depending on your door or whatever, most people should find a way to make these work. The battery cover is hard to install and feels like you're forcing it on -- so I'm concerned that battery replacement might be frustrating. So try to be sure there's a way to remove the active sensor from the battery door, which is done by sliding away the sensor body. Those are the only negative things I can say about these devices.Importantly, the both my Window and Door contact sensors already had the new Thread firmware (purchased in July 2021). So I did not need to upgrade their firmware. At first when I added an Eve contact sensor, it didn't trigger automations reliably. So I rebooted all my Eve Energy and HomePod devices. Since then they've been working flawlessly, every time, and near instantly. I have one contact sensor that turns on the hallway lights when the closet doors are opened, and turns them off when closed. I have another sensor on a slider that we only open up to let fresh air in. So I set up an automation to put our Ecobee into away mode to keep the AC or heat from turning on when we have the windows open. They've been extremely fast, triggering within a second of opening or closing. By using the Eve app I can see that so far these contact sensor Thread end-points are relaying their activity to an Eve Energy thread router that is about 30-40 feet away with several walls. That's impressive range and I'm surprised they're not routing through closer HomePod Minis or NanoLeaf Essentials bulbs. I plan on buying more of these devices soon as I can think of more practical, life improving things to do with them :-)

I had these set up first, through homekit. Due to some issues with homekit and my current set up, I determined to use Alexa devices as the hub (and connect it to homekit as well). Sensors work great, I just wish they would come up with a better design for replacing the battery. In some places, I had to remove the whole sensor, clean where it was, clean the bottom of the sensor, and then use my own tape in order to reattach it. This was due to me having to reset the devices to switch to alexa as the primary hub.

First off, let me get this out of the way. If you want a Threat-based window/door sensor, this is the only one you should be looking at. There aren't a lot of other choices, but this is the only one I have found that continues working after 24 hours (I won't name names, but the other ones know who they are). Of course, check the date of this review, as things may get better but for now, don't waste your time with anybody else.

That said, this device is not without issues. In my home, there is a small but significant gap between the door and the part of the door jam where the magnetic part of the sensor goes. The sensor in the Eve unit is not very sensitive. When I initially installed it, there was a 50% chance that the door would actually register as being closed. I couldn't move the sensor and the magnet any closer together. I was worried that this wouldn't work ether. And then I decided to attach another rare earth magnet to the magnet, giving it a stronger magnetic field. That did the job. Eve either needs to make their sensor more sensitive, or pack more powerful magnets to cover all bases with installation.

On a positive note, I was extremely happy to see how well integrated this was with HomeKit. Once I connected the sensor to my HomeKit network, I saw that there was an update ready and it immediately started downloading and installed without any action from me. This is how these devices should work.

I have always heard that Eve's products were well designed, but I had always shied away from them because they weren't always the least expensive option. That said, this has been a very good experience for me, and I will buy more of these sensors as soon as I get the warm fuzzy that it will stay working after a week. (Being on the bleeding edge of Thread is not without its frustrations.)

I’ve read lots of great reviews on this product; many note the easy setup. That has most definitely not been the case for me. I have tried two separate sensors and am having the same issue with both. I have a HomeKit setup with multiple Minis, 2nd Gen HomePods, and AppleTV 4k 3rd gen…plenty of thread network coverage. I am able to add the sensors to my home but, once added, they show unreachable and low battery. I have reset them and ordered brand new batteries…same result.

Edit: not sure if this is an Eve or Apple issue (or both), but I spent several hours trying to figure this out. Turns out that if my AppleTV 4k gen 4 is the hub and connected over Ethernet, the Eve sensor will not connect. Setup and connection is good if my AppleTv is connected over WiFi. Reconnect Ethernet and Eve disconnects again. Also, I have a couple HomePod OGs and AppleTv 4k first gen’s and the Eve will not connect if any of these are the hub (AppleTv wired nor WiFi).

I own the older version of Eve Door & Window and this model is way more responsive while Matter adds the flexibility of using Siri, Alexa, and Google Assistant.

Note: You do need a hub of some sort. I use my second generation Apple TV 4K as a hub, but it also works with some devices from Amazon, Google and Samsung.

It runs off of a ER14250 battery which is included.

I use Eve Door & Window to be notified if someone in the family opens or closes a window at home. I can also check the Eve app to remotely see if I left a window open. I'm excited to use Eve Door & Window to setup automations for my next IOT project.

1.0 out of 5 stars Battery compartment gets stuck

Apparently some of these have overly tough to remove battery compartments which are a struggle even when it's not applied to a surface and I'd imagine infinitely worse when adhered.

This is unacceptable at any price point, but it's worse at the premium they charge for their products.

I’m wondering about what happens when the battery runs out. 3M backing tape sticks them to the surface. The battery is behind where the 3M tape is. So you would have to somehow rip the sensor off the wall or wherever it’s attached to change out the battery. The battery is also not a common or standard type battery. Other than that it’s works as intended.

I did everything required. I ended up ordering 2 appletvs because it wasn’t clear upfront on the requirements but waved that off on my own ignorance. After ensuring the proper AppleTV for the thread border router was the correct product, I went through weeks of support (a lot of no responses) with absolutely no success. I’ve returned the product and going with something else.

Doesn't actually send "Apple Notifications", but rather it shows if the door is open or closed in Home or Eve app. They made me go out and buy an Apple hub and it made no difference. I put 5 Stars so no else would lose money to this company. The support staff really don't care. They close the case and you have to start over again after every attempt to contact tech support.
