Product Description
Engineered with precision by Kershaw and designed with uncompromising functionality by Emerson Knives. The 3-inch modified clip-point blade is made of 8Cr14MoV stainless steel, featuring wear resistance, edge retention, and versatile cutting capability. The black-oxide coating protects the blade and provides a non-reflective matte finish contrasting with the CQC-5K’s handsome G-10 olive drab handle scales. The CQC-5K’s blade is manually operated with either the thumb disk or the patented “wave-shaped feature”, enabling the knife to be opened as it is removed from the pocket by a small wave-shaped tab on the top of the blade. Built to catch on the pocket seam, the wave opens the knife as it comes out of the pocket. By the time the CQC-5K has been fully withdrawn from the pocket, the blade is deployed and ready for use. The pocketclip is reversible for left or right handed carry, and a secure locking liner prevents accidental blade closure during operation.

This is an excellent little knife that has a good finish and edge out of the box. It came ready to shave.
I've been carrying it for over a month now in multiple positions, and I've found it deploys reliably and easily with minimal practice despite having a rather smaller wave hook than I'm used to. Unless I'm mistaken, this Kershaw/Emerson line is the cheapest series of knives with the wave feature: a solid, straight out of the pocket deployment feature that cannot be beat. I think my dad's Spyderco has the wave but it cost around $70, my Fox karambit was twice that and the Emerson even more still. Cold Steel and some other manufacturers who haven't licensed the wave from Emerson have gotten pretty good results out of "thumb plate" designs that also catch on the pocket and work in the same way, but while they do work, I do not like them as much as the wave hook itself, but even those tend to be around $50. Kershaw makes good quality cheap knives in my experience, and at least this first entry in their Emerson series that I've bought is no exception.
5 out of 5, would recommend. Probably going to get some as Christmas gifts for people this year.
There are several styles to pick from in this Kershaw/Emerson collaboration and I had a hard time narrowing it down. It basically came down to aesthetics and so I went with the 5K since I didn't have any knives with green handle scales and a blackened blade. It was a good choice. The knife is solid, built really well, extremely comfortable, visually appealing and, as I said earlier, a breeze to open once you get the wave feature down. The steel is pretty good, too -- easy to sharpen and holds an edge well. It came quite sharp out of the box. Oh, and the price point is excellent.
Probably the only downside is the knife is a little on the small side. I prefer my EDC blades to be a bit longer and beefier in the hand. As a result, I'll probably purchase the CQC-7K or maybe the CQC-8K down the road. Otherwise, a great knife and one that has made me a huge fan of the Kershaw/Emerson collaboration. Highly recommended.
The drawbacks are what you'd expect from a sub-$30 chinese knife. It's significantly heavier than other knives in this size category, the G10 feels under-textured and cheap, the blade isn't perfectly centered, and the coating is no match for DLC. The knife came a bit stiff, but oiling the pivot and opening it many times seems to have remedied that. The lockup is quite late, but there is no sticking when releasing the lock bar. The only complaint I have relative to the design is the thumb disk, an Emerson trademark. While better than many thumb studs, it will take some getting used to if you're the type who likes to flick open your blades.
All in all, this is an excellent entry point for knife people who want a taste of Emerson without paying $200+. If you're looking for a neat little EDC or an emergency backup defense knife, you could do far worse.
