Get ready to make SQL easy!

Updated for the latest version of SQL, the new edition of this perennial bestseller shows programmers and web developers how to use SQL to build relational databases and get valuable information from them. Covering everything you need to know to make working with SQL easier than ever, topics include how to use SQL to structure a DBMS and implement a database design; secure a database; and retrieve information from a database; and much more.

SQL is the international standard database language used to create, access, manipulate, maintain, and store information in relational database management systems (DBMS) such as Access, Oracle, SQL Server, and MySQL. SQL adds powerful data manipulation and retrieval capabilities to conventional languages—and this book shows you how to harness the core element of relational databases with ease.

  • Server platform that gives you choices of development languages, data types, on-premises or cloud, and operating systems
  • Find great examples on the use of temporal data
  • Jump right in—without previous knowledge of database programming or SQL

As database-driven websites continue to grow in popularity—and complexity—SQL For Dummies is the easy-to-understand, go-to resource you need to use it seamlessly.

Despite the title, this is NOT for newbies. It is a reference book.

Despite the title, this is NOT for newbies. It is a reference book.
I borrowed this book from the library. I have quite a lot of experience querying with SQL, but I wanted to go more in-depth. This book did provide me with that depth, but the organization is very poor, and the author is prone to jump right into technical jargon without much effort to ground the reader and ensure they are tracking. In that way, it reads much more like a reference guide than an introduction to SQL.If you are trying to learn SQL from the ground up, DO NOT GET THIS BOOK. The book does not attempt to take you from easy SQL queries to more advanced topics. Instead, the author describes SQL databases and the SQL language in exhaustive detail, with zero consideration that this book is for "Dummies" (i.e., newbies). For example, long before he ever describes the structure of a simple query, he presents an exhaustive list of all the data types that you may find in a SQL database. Here are some subheadings in the early pages: DECFLOAT data tape, Approximate numbers, TIMESTAMP with TIME Zone data type, etc. See the images I provided for what the author has decided to introduce "Dummies" readers to in Chapter 2 of this book, before he introduces such simple concepts as "how to write your first SQL query."Indeed, it's isn't until MUCH later in the book that he discusses joins (e.g., INNER JOIN, LEFT JOIN, etc.). These are a fundamental SQL concept that usually gets introduced early. His explanation of things like joins are not well-done. He might give a quick analogy to explain a concept but then jumps right into a technical explanation. The Dummies brand chose the wrong author here - this author fails to consider that Dummies are for beginners. This author could have done his own book about some advanced SQL topics and I'm sure it would have been OK.I actually did benefit from the book because I am not a beginner, so I learned plenty of new concepts of SQL. But reading this book was a chore because it reads like a reference book. Indeed, it is essentially a reference book and is not a book to actually teach you to use SQL. For that, you'll need to go elsewhere.

So full of information and extremely helpful.

I am a senior data professional. If anyone on my team used a cursor in the code would be immediately rejected. Skip that chapter, no one uses that ancient technique. I have refactored code that used cursors and saw dramatic increase in run time removing them(hours to minutes). That chapter should be removed.

I would say this book is for intermediate users or programmers in general. The organization is lousy and the author just jumps in with terms and subjects without any precursory explanations or definitions. I found myself as frustrated with this as I was with my textbook.
