The unit is built overly delicate and flimsy. Some of the buttons are unworkable because they are wobbly and flimsy. The antennae are particularly flimsy. During a very careful unpacking, it felt like they might break at the slightest touch. Personalizing the settings with the web interface took quite a while primarily because, just like most GUI interfaces, it is intuitive and friendly only to the person who designed it. The unit does not have a scheduled-startup feature, that some routers have, although if it continues to work well, I will not miss the feature. On scheduled WiFi-off, it needs several reboots for the settings to get etched into the firmware. Even then, it shuts down the WiFi at random times and never wakes it up again. After five days, this router stopped working.
Finally got the Netgear AX8 works great. Wifi if fast. Connected to laptop is slow but i think you have to take down firewall and anti-virus to see the real speed or your internet speed may be trotling with ISP. Comcast has this issue unless you have a fiber set up. No issue with Netgear Nighthawk. Tibe serous Any one of these WiFi6 routers are good. From the cheaper TPlink for 129 to this Netgear which is 300. Get the C.1000 modem or Sb8200 so you are good for couple of years.
The main reason it's being replaced is a huge one that fast speeds can't even get over. I am currently using this as an access point and not a router and it is CONSTANTLY loosing internet connection. And no I don't mean signal. All devices will be connected to the radio signal and be a local intranet but reaching the outside world is impossible. I'd say on average over the year it has been hard reset about 50 times. I have noticed a trend of it being during heavy use and warm days so temperatures may have something to do with it. The problem is that mine is wall mounted and never covered.
It was so bad that I used the combo device after the original return date and only started using it again out of necessity. The frustration has returned and I can't recommend this device even at $50.

Dell XPS-15 9560 10.0.19042
QNAP TS-332X Firmware 4.5.2.1594
The router was easy to set up. I immediately turned on AX, OFDMA on both ratios. I tried all three 160MHz-capable channels, 36, 100 and 149. There is no “Auto”. I was amazed to immediately see 2.4Gbps on my wifi NIC and my entire 450Mbsp internet coming through. Now for the real test.
I mapped a drive to a 10Gbps QNAP NAS. Fired up ATTO and loaded the router down. For some reason, I could not get above 60MBps (600+Mbps). That’s about the same as my TP-Link C2600. My Trendnet AC2600 has peaks of 70MBps (700+Mbps). Those two routers are separate dual 2.4 and 5GHz routers but this is a mighty AX router it should be from 50% to 3-times faster. My son has an ASUS mesh router and he easily gets wire-speed (100MBps (1000+Mbps). I tried turning off throughput booster and packet coalescing on the NIC with no improvement. I flipped settings in the router’s wifi settings and advanced settings with no improvement. All of these sperate tests were when the routers were within 2 feet of the laptop.
If I had to guess, I would say the router has a radio that can connect to high-speed carriers but cannot actually bridge data at full speed. "Wifi-6 connection - CHECK!!!".
I was hoping the router would at least have greater range or speed at range but no. 30 feet away and through two walls, it transfers data differently but not much differently than the Trendnet (See picture. Trendnet -L, Netgear - R)
Good
• Very sophisticated capabilities including comprehensive VPN
• Smart Connect can uses a single SSID to dynamically switch between 2.4 and 5GHz carriers.
• WPA-3 worked for my iPhone 12 but not for Windows. This is not the router’s fault. So, it’s back to WPA-2 AES for me.
• There’s some good filtering and parental controls in there.
• There are two separate guest networks. Good for transient family and friends and doorbells that require SSID broadcast.
• Email notification and good filterable logs.
• Beamforming and MU-MIMO capable.
• UPnP and IPv6 can be turned off.
• Shocker! VLANs !!
Bad
• Poor throughput compared to 802.11ac even though the carrier shows up to 2.4Gbps. It never went above about 600Mbps throughput. My trendnet AC2600 TEW-827DRU peaks above 700Mbps on an 866MHz carrier at close range.
• Kind of unstable connection.
• Lost the capability to do channel 100 on the 5GHz band eventually when the router found airplane radar.
• The Netgear Nighthawk App tries to get you to set up an account on their Servers.
• No USB 3.0. So, go buy the RAX40. It has USB 3.0.
• You can set the Client DNS IPs (Good) but not have a sperate router DNS (Bad)
• 2.5, 5.0 or 10Gbps LAN & WAN links would have been nice but you can only wish at this price.
• Smart Connect pushed me to the 2.5 band unless I was VERY close to the router even when I set my NIC’s preferred radio to 5GHz.
It's an OK router and maybe more firmware updates could fix it. In the end. I am returning the router. What a disappointment.
