You can replace the regular magnet piece (the magnet without the wiring) with a stronger magnet for the switch to work at a bit further space. Instead of the 1.5in soace you can get it up to 3in to work. I tried my phone mount magnet which is probably three times stronger and the distance from which the switch activated was around 3.5in - 4in
NC - Normally Closed. Meaning once the two magnets are sperated the circuit is closed and power is sent from one pole to the next. Resulting the switch being on. When the two magnets are together or directly in front one another, the circuit is open or disrupted and zero power is sent from one pole to the next. Resulting the switch being off.
NO - Normally Open. Basically the opposite of NC. Meaning when the two magnets are directly in front on another the circuit is closed and power is sent from one pole to the next. Resulting the switch being on. But when the magnets are separated the power is disrupted abd power is not sent from one pole to the other. Resulting in the switch being off.
Installation advice: Do Not Remove The Double Sided Tape First!! You should wire your switch up and test it first to make sure everything work as its suppose to. Now get some regular tape and take the two magnets in the spots where you would like to position the magnets. Turn on the power and test the magnets to see if they align and work correctly. Now remove the double sided tape and stick the magnets to the locations you tested on. This worked best for me. These magnets are very sensitive when aligning them. But they are worth the extra couple of seconds because they work well and have both NC and NO which are rare to find in stores today on one switch.
This summer I was stuck in downtown traffic in Houston Texas, when I got a Front Door alarm email from my Grandparents house in Lubbock Texas 500 miles away. The picture was of a man I did not recognize, so I remotely access the camera to see what was going on. The young man was standing in the front door way talking a miles an hour to my grandfather who has dementia. I immediately called their house and got my grandmother and asked her who the man was and what he wanted. She said he was a salesman trying to sale them a home security system. She then walked over to him and said to the man, "We don't need anything you are selling". She then told them man to look up at the camera and said, "My grandson is watching you right now and is on the phone asking who you are and he has pictures of you." I watched the whole thing and it was so funny. The poor security alarm salesman just hung his head and walked away. LOL!
The product works flawlessly, and it is easily hidden and not easily noticed, which is why I bought a black switch in the first place. Some other options were white, which I didn't want in my dark wood dresser.
As well, this switch was half the price of others I considered.
The adhesive backing is very strong and stuck to the wood in my armoire very well. Other adhesives I've used, including the adhesive backing for the LED strips, didn't work nearly as well on the wood.
At one point, I incorrectly wired the strip and it shorted. I thought it broke, but a good whack with a screwdriver unstuck the switch.
The range for magnet to take effect on the switch is about 1 inch, perhaps less. It shouldn't be an issue for your project as long as you can get the two pieces within that inch range.
There are no directions included with this item, so make sure you know what you're doing when wiring this into a circuit. However, there are markings on the piece to indicate "Common" "Always Open" and "Always Closed" to help you figure out what you need for your project.
