4.2 4.2 out of 5 stars 165 ratings

A train crash on the London to Edinburgh Express changes forever the lives of the passengers and their families.

"Arguably the best of all writers of hospital fiction." Nursing Times

1983. Young Senior Accident Officer, Jason MacDonald, is travelling north to visit his parents for Hogmanay. In the same carriage is Dame Ruth Dean, whose life has been intertwined with that of the MacDonalds since the Second World War. Suddenly, a mindless act of vandalism leads to chaos ...

For the survivors of the crash, and the family and hospital staff who care for them, life will never be the same again.

Lucilla Andrews wrote 33 novels, an autobiography, and many short stories. Her books were published in 11 languages and sold almost 3 million copies during her lifetime. The Nursing Times said that Lucilla was “arguably the best of all writers of hospital fiction”, and The Guardian called her the “brand leader in hospital fiction”.

Lucilla was born in Egypt, but went to boarding school in England. She trained as a Nightingale nurse at St Thomas’s hospital in London. Her first published work was a short story in Good Housekeeping magazine, which she wrote while working as a nurse and bringing up her young daughter.

Lucilla was a founder member of the Romantic Novelists’ Association, and was presented with a Lifetime Achievement Award by the RNA shortly before her death.

Despite their huge popularity, Lucilla’s novels were out of print for some time, and have never before been published as ebooks. Happily, Wyndham Books are now reissuing her entire backlist of novels in ebook editions.

5.0 out of 5 stars Sign of a good book! She brings the trilogy to a close

The third book in the Jason saga. I find there are bits of this that are stupendous, and there are bits that are thought-provoking, but always with Lucilla Andrews' insight and finely-tuned characters. Having said that, the twist in this tale always gets me in the gut. Sign of a good book! She brings the trilogy to a close, leaving you wanting more. And of course, there is the detailed observation of the change and development in nursing, as well. Would that we still had nurses like this.

3.0 out of 5 stars A little disappointing by comparison with previous books.

I found the story very disjointed with too much jumping from thoughts of previous experiences to present day happenings. This was why I gave only three stars.
