SETUP NOT USER FRIENDLY- Will not configure as RAID
I am a very experienced Mac User. (30 years.) I know how to set up hard drives. I use Final Cut Pro. I'm a high-level computer user. I have a number of G Drives, which have worked well. I needed to upgrade to RAID. There are no instructions with this drive. It is not intuitive.I found a YouTube video with step-by-step instructions, but the G-Drive website changed. I'm intelligent enough to figure out how to download the G-drive app. It crashes every time I attempt to format the drive to RAID. (See image.)I found instructions for MAC disc utility RAID ASSISTANT. Followed each step, but the final button turns gray and cannot proceed.I'm not stupid, but I spent hours and cannot find instructions to mount this drive as a mirrored RAID.I'm giving tech support low ratings, subject to change if they contact me and resolve the problem. But for now, this drive is not able to configure as workable RAID.

I have used G-Tech drives for close to 15 years. They are built solid for a desktop use and I usually don't travel with them because of how heavy they are and so for that purpose I will use SSDs. This 28TB tends to be loud but that's because the fans are usually always running unless it's in standby mode. I'm okay with the fan noise because I know my files will be okay as this thing stays cool. I use this one mainly for media file backups while I edit with an additional G-tech alongside. They are both fast and suitable for heavy video files.

The tech support has always been very responsive, friendly and knowledgeable when I needed them or had questions. I had an issue where one of the removable drives wasn't responsive when I first purchased the unit and so I filed a case with tech support and they got back to me right away. Not only was it a pleasant conversation but they troubleshoot with me why it occurred and I was back in business in no time. Saved my butt and kept my client and that's why I will always purchase products from this company.

I've been a G-Technology fan ever since I purchased my first G-Drive back in 2012 when I started my photography business. About 4 years ago, I started doing video and found that the G-RAID was blazing fast, which was perfect for editing RED Digital Camera footage. The reasons why I like G-Raids/G-Drives: 1)so simple to use. Literally, just unbox. Plug in the cables. Turn on power. Copy files onto device. Simple. Simple. Simple. 2) They don't fail. I have some very high end clients that includes many celebrities and I can't afford for anything to go wrong. That's why I trust G-Technology. Dependable. Trustworthy and they get the job done. The industrial-looking brushed aluminum container look classy, elegant and timeless. Modern and sophisticated. I just had to retrieve a file from 5 years ago. And BOOM..... the G-Drive booted up just like it was brand new. You can't go wrong with G-Technology.

I've had my G-Raid 8TB drive for about two years now. It's been an incredible workhorse. I use it on my Macbook Pro via USB-C connection. No latency or issues editing HD videos. I am a professional TV editor (Dirty Jobs, American Chopper, etc.) and go through a TON of footage. This drive seems to hold up well. I use it with Premiere, Final Cut, and Avid. Worth every penny.

NOTE: I would not use this as a backup drive, though. It only has two bays, and in order to get the bandwidth, I had to stripe the drives RAID-0. So, if one of the drives fails, I lose everything. That's not a big deal because I use it as a media drive only. I keep all projects on a separate drive that is backed up remotely.

I purchased the 20TB one for work. after a few months, it started acting up and over time it got worse. at first, it stopped being recognized by my computer. it took me about 6 weeks to go back and forth with customer support. tried different things, replaced the wire more than once until I gave up, and just "Rescan Discs" every time after turning on my computer. then it started making a loud noise, like a lawnmower machine. so I turn it off when not using it, but when using it it's so freaking loud and frustrating! contacting support, I got a reply every few days. and lame replies at that (such as "take a picture of the label/ serial number"). it's a freaking nightmare seeking support from them. extremely slow and they never try to actually solve the issue but just come up with BS of "try this" or "do that". buttom line the product sucks and their support suck even more. Unfortunately, I am way past my return date, so I have to take the loss and purchase another one (from a different company of course!)
I don't recommend getting any product from G-Technology. look elsewhere. otherwise, you're in for a long-lasting frustration!

I have a competitor's RAID that is only 1T (Raid 1) and I needed 3T for my videos; so I got the 8T which will become 4T in RAID 1. I like that G-Tech is MAC-first. Easy to reconfigure to Raid 1 from the shipped Raid 0. I was weary that the configurator (just download from G-Tech site) would give me problems on 10.15 but worked fine. Some complained about the noise, but it is quieter than my other RAID. It has a fan and enterprise-class drives (which emphasize reliability over noise) so I wouldn't sleep next to it. Reasonable speed; I moved about 1T from an external TB3 SSD to this in about an hour (~230MB/s; your mileage may vary).

Be careful if you are a Windows user. Setup can be a little confusing and the directions on the G-Technology website are almost non-existent or you need a degree in engineering to understand them. My saving grace was my 15 years of old IT experience.
In order to get Thunderbolt to work I Had to update the BIOS, the drivers and the Thunderbolt control app. If you are going to use this with a Laptop you may need change to power setting on USB Root Hub Power Management in Device Manager. I had to change it so the laptop did not control the power to save energy. When it was left on I kept losing the connection to the G-Raid drive and it corrupted my Lightroom catalog.
I have setup the drive in Raid 1. I have done multiple speed test with Thunderbolt 40 Gps, Thunderbolt 20 Gps and the USB connection and the results with Raid 1 is that there is no difference in speed on 2 different computers. My results where about 260 MB/s Read and 245 MB/s Write, no matter what cable or connection I used. So I'm not sure why you would ever use the expensive 40 Gps Thunderbolt cables. As a side note, using an Active Thunderbolt 3 cable really didn't work for me, the laptop did not like it at all, I kept getting the blue screen of death with a driver error.

I am very pleased with the G-Technology Thunderbolt 3. Very fast response read and write speeds when connected to my mac mini server via thunderbolt 3 to thunderbolt which is what my server supports. Bases on other reviews I found it quieter than i thought it would be. I also have it connected most of the time to my Time Capsule 5th generation via USB making it available to all devices on my network. It was also easy to set up in less than 5 minutes. It appears to be a much better build quality than other RAID enclosures i have on my network. I purchased the 8tB model and have it configured to RAID1.

This new drive is very noisy with continuous clicking noise from the hard drive even when data ia not access at all. Maybe it is bad drive in the unit and returned back to Amazon.
