I always know to set aside plenty of reading time when I start a new book by Annie Anderson, because once you start, you won't stop until the very end! This book is no exception and I was drawn into the story from the first page.

Darby Adler, soon to be ex-cop, is fated to become a Warden (whatever that means!), but first, she has mourn the man who raised her and her real father, who happens to be the Angel of Death. And, don't forget her sister, Sloane, who may or may not be dead and is soon to take over their father's job. Then, you have their evil brother, Essex, who likes to send mysterious notes laced with deadly magic.

Our poor Darby just can't seem to catch a break, but at least she has a growing (and very steamy) relationship with the sexy Bishop La Roux. Plus, she has a crew of loyal friends which happen to include a fae, a werewolf, a ghostly grandfather, and numerous other supernatural beings.

The story moves at a fast pace with plenty of magic, mayhem and tears along the way. Get ready for wild ride as you join Darby in her adventures with the Arcane! If you enjoy sassy independent heroines in your books, mixed with some steam, you will love this book and this series. I received an ARC of this book through Booksprouts, but the opinions in this review are entirely my own.

The last note killed Darby’s sister, if you can you kill someone who is already dead…
.
Another note from Essex has arrived and it undoubtedly has a blood curse attached to it just like the one that would have killed Sloan if she wasn’t dead but living already. The temptation to touch it is strong, even after fae magic has it sealed safely in a bag. Maybe she is weakened by all the souls swirling under her skin but Darby Adler cannot resist the temptation and her action sets off a chain of events that leaves her Warden of Knoxville and put everyone she loves in mortal danger.

This book is packed with paranormal action. The plot is a dark and intriguing page-turner, but still has time to squeeze in some steamy scenes. I received an advance copy but my review is honest and voluntary. This is a great series!

5 Cranky Stars

I swear we need a petition to protect Annie's characters. She puts them through the ringer and this time wasn't any different. Darby is out there just trying to live her life. She's grieving and also in charge of something she never wanted to be a part of.

Darby Adler is finding family in people she never knew about and love with Bishop at her side. If only her life would calm down. Except a blazing fireball sets off a chain of events in Darby's life and ends not too well.

Oops Darby did it again just call her Britney. This book was a ride. I adore this series but I'm honestly scared how the next one will go. In a good way but still scared.

Dead Shift (Grave Talker #4)
by Annie Anderson

***5 stars***

Darby's back with her familiar brand of spice and sass, and I absolutely love it! Still shaken up by the events that led to her brush with death, and needless to say, she's a bit salty.

Someone's set literal fire to my girl, Ingrid's, nest and heads are about to roll, and a fresh war is about to start. Being in her new position of authority, Darby walks a fine line of life and death, and wrong and right. She's gained more enemies, yet always has her gang for backup.

In searching for the guilty party, Darby questions suspects, including the wolves. Let me just say, that was the funniest conversation I've ever read. I was rolling at Darby's snarky attitude and commentary. The girl's a comedian, and didn't even know it!

A must read for all Darby fans. She's fired up and ready to roll, and I'm so here for it!

I am enjoying this series so much.
These two sisters really know how to kick some butt in the supernatural world and beyond.
Darby has always had her friend J at her back though, even if he is human.
But becoming the warden was more then she expected, as it is her personal life dragged her around in amongst the job she had just been given.
Then there are the powers that her dad gave her that she is still trying to figure out.
Add her persistent ex ABI agent (now lover) to the mix and it all keeps going around.
Oh then theres the grave bit that happens in her dreams.....
As I said, so addictive, can't wait for the next one!

Dead Shift is the fourth book in the Grave Talker series.

In this book Darby starts her new job as Warden of Knoxville.
I love Darby’s character. She is funny, sassy and can kick supernaturals butt.
This book is full of action and supernaturals. I really didn’t see the twist that was thrown at us either at the end. I definitely can’t wait to see what happens next.
If you love paranormal romance with mystery, suspense and plenty of humour then you should check out this book!

Holy Grave Talker!!!

This picks up during the last book of her sister and right after. The action is fast paced and it never stops. The twists and ending were well thought out and amazing. I'm not going to spoil it for anyone, BUT you need this. You really do. I can't wait till the next one.

She’s at the top of the food chain in the supernatural world and she knows it!! Enough to draw a target on her back and a whole lot of baddies out to get her and she don’t even sweat. 😎 She’s about to clean out the town and im here for it!!! Watch out! Demons, wolves, witches and everyone and their mama have nothing on her! 😈 muahahah! CANT WAIT FOR MORE!!!

Original review

This book was provided by the author in exchange for an honest review. Thank you Annie Anderson!

Dead Shift is the fourth book in the Grave Talker series and continues the story of Darby and her friends.

When I always start a book by Annie Anderson, I already know that I’m going to enjoy it. Annie Anderson is such an amazing author, and she always creates an interesting plotline with fun characters. Dead Shift was, as usual, an amazing read and I really liked reading about Darby and her friends. Her story is getting more interesting and I’m looking forward to the last book in the series. I cannot wait to read her happy ending!

Darby becomes the Warden, and with that job some new problems arise. The good part about becoming the Warden is getting some new colleagues. In Dead Shift we get to know a few new people and I’m so excited to get to know them better. I love the fact that the Grave Talker series is so inclusive with so many different supernatural beings. It’s just so interesting!

Dead Shift is such an amazing Paranormal Romance filled with action and some spicy scenes. I really enjoy reading Darby’s story, and like I mentioned above, I’m really looking forward to reading her happy ending. I’m also kinda sad because the next book will be the last book in the series. This series is so well-written and amazing, and the crossover with the Soul Reader series makes it even more fun to read the Grave Talker series.

Once I started reading I could NOT put it down. Annie Anderson has a way with writing. Her books suck you in and possess you completely making putting it down impossible. This book is no different. It flowed so well. I absolutely love this series.

Darby is one of those characters who you will remember. She’s quick witted, hilarious, accepting, fierce, fearless and always does the right thing. Not to mention she sees ghosts, and loves food! What’s not to love about her. I love her friends and the people she comes in contact with. Bishop is back! I absolutely adore him. As well as her rag tag group of different supernaturals.

This book is fast paced and keeps going until the very end. I feel that Darby never really gets a break from all this. Her evil brother X is always seems to be two steps ahead of them. Sloane, here sister, we don’t know if she’s dead or not. And their father, the angel of Death, isn’t around. Can Darby do what she needs to do to stop it all? Will she give up or keep fighting? Read to find out! You won’t regret reading this series. It’s laugh out loud epicness.

“Dead Shift” is the fourth instalment in the “Grave Talker Series” by Annie Anderson, a fantastic, original, good, solid, classic urban fantasy, which follows Darby Adler an ex-cop, whose very special necromancy gift, brought her to the attention of the ABI (Arcane Bureau of Investigation), and eventually thrown in jail (‘Dead to Me’, Book 1). Nine months later, and after making a deal with the ABI, Darcy began to use her gift to solve cold cases for the Bureau, while joggling her day-to-day life, her own dad comeback from the grave (which in fact put her in hot water in the first place), and her love-hate relationship with Agent La Roux (Darcy hates to ‘like’ him, and we love to ‘hate’ him, thus win/win😉 (‘Dead and Gone', Book 2). Darby’s sister coming to visit in the middle of her much-needed vacay ('Dead Calm', Book 3) has already clue us in: Darcy cannot take a breath. But this new adventure tops it all, and does the title all the honors: highest fatigue and the highest risk of attacks does not even begin to describe.

As Darby took on the post as Warden of Knoxville (or rather got stuck with the job), she didn’t get any badge but rather a metaphorical neon-blinking target saying, “shot here”, and after her falling out and being on the run from ABI, they number of her allies fluctuates from zero to one, depending on whether she’s actually looking onto a mirror or not 😉 yes, the situation is really that dreary. And still….Darby’s live goes from standard-bad to certified worse in the blink of an eye, or more accurately as she let both eyes on the note “Azrael lied to you. Killian isn’t where you think he is.” . With everything in the line – job, relationships, her life – Darby does was she does best… take everything on with a good dose of sassiness and a healthy side of wit. Allies she might not have, but friends are eternal.

Grab your beverage of choice and some snacks, put the cell on silent and prepare to sacrifice your beauty sleep once more, because – as usually when it comes to Darby – it will sheer impossible to stop ‘watching’ the plot unfold. Annie Anderson has done it yet again: very well-written story, full of twists and unexpected situations that keep on evolving until the very end, interesting plots, joyful anecdotes, and a relatable, witty, more than not hangry heroine, with an unending love for coffee, thrown in the middle of a carefully crafted urban fantasy world that feels realistic despite the genre. Darby against all odds…. the odds have it coming 😉

Can I say just how much I hate this FMC at the point in the series? I mean how dumb can you be? She knows this note is cursed. She knows its a trap. She knows that it is bad news! But I firmly believed she kicked all the people out of her house not to get the silence she claimed she wanted. But with the firm intentions of touching that note! Now the author makes it seem like she was under some kind of compulsion to do so. Which might be the case. But I can't help but wonder... Was it Bishop that made her do so? How come his eyes are always flashing gold at her just before something bad happens?

So Darby is a grave talker. She talks to ghost, and sends them on to their rest. I admit that not all ghosts are ready to go for whatever reason. But it is her job to send them on when they are. It also heals her when she does so. So why for crying out loud is she not doing her job? Why the fuck is she scared of them? Why does she continually forget that, this is the way that she heals herself, this is her job? What she was created to do? Does this make sense to anybody else?

Is it bad that I find myself mightily intrigued by Aemon? The Prince of Hell seems like an intriguing character 😆😆😆 I really want to know more about him. While he did do some really bad things in this book, for some reason I am getting the feeling it was justice he was dealing versus just taking a life for the sake of doing so. I find this very curious. Every time he took control of Darby it was always with justice in mind. Never for any evil or wrong purpose. Yes I am very intrigued with him and I do so hope we see more of him in this series. Because I just found my new reason for sticking with this series. So once again it is the side characters that are going to have me reading the next book in this series.

3 What? You Don't Name Your Chairs? Stars

Dead Shift is the fourth book in the Grave Talker series by Annie Anderson.

I'm honestly getting tired of how little is actually explained. Now there's an Arcane Council too? And they just happened to appoint her as Warden and completely forget to mention the Prince of Hell imprisoned in her towns cemetery? I feel like that should be the very first notice any Warden gets: which big powers they need to make sure don't escape from their well-deserved imprisonment.

I know this Davenport fcktard is about to royally piss me off. How this Council, which is supposed to keep the ABI in check has missed so much inbred corruption is beyond me. What a fustercluck. Using his power as the director of the bureau to try to take out the only woman actually amounting to any real police or protection work is far more than irritating or baffling. And I'm already dreaming of his demise.

Then there's the fact that she doesn't even get one day before some weres move into town. (Or possibly were just hiding there). And they are out murdering and burning nests down. That Uncle Dave is an omega because his dad is the terrible Alpha of this pack was one big bomb of a surprise.

Why couldn't dear old Azreal have mentioned she was possessed when he healed her? I'm sure he noticed.

If the Council isn't full to the brim of corruption as well, that will be the true shock.

This is the fourth book in this series and they must be read in order. They also crossover over with the Soul Reader Series by Annie. This book does over lap some with the last Soul Reader book. You get some of the same story line but from Darby’s perspective. Darby’s sister Sloane strikes a deal with the ABI and in it Darby becomes the warden of Knoxville. Things are about to get even more interesting for Darby. She is forced to hit the ground running. Someone is setting fire to place that are very familiar to Darby. She has to figure out who before more people die, seven have died already. With the help of some witches, she gets a lead. Wolves. They used to be in the area but became out of control and were forced out. Now that the ghouls and vampires are gone, they are coming back. But did they ever really leave or were they just waiting for their chance. Then of course there is someone or something attacking Darby personally. What will the cost of saving her be? What could be unleashed on the world? I can’t say enough about this book. I loved it so much. This whole series really and the one it crosses over with. Annie writes fantastic character that make you wish you could be friends with and worlds you wish you could live it. Congrats on another fantastic book Annie. If I could give it more stars I would. Annie is always a must read author for me.

I am always excited for a book by Annie Anderson, and this book was no exception. I was pulled in straight from the start. Dead Shift is the fourth book in the Grave Talker series and I highly recommend that you read the other books in the series to be able to understand this one.

Darby’s arc in this book is a wild adventure, along with her friends as she goes from being an ex-cop to a Warden, which no one is quite sure what that means. We meet some new characters because you know, new job comes with new coworkers and they are a hoot. I’m excited to see where this group goes in the next book. And more supernatural characters and aspects, such a joy and treat.

Overall a great read, but I did have to go back to book three of the sister series, Soul Reader, because they take place at the same time. It was a bit of a challenge but it gave me a better look at some things that I missed in Soul Reader, questions I had that weren’t answered until Dead Shift. I enjoyed this book and am excited for the next one.

Good

NOTE: this might be book four in the Grave Talker series, but there are some key issues that occur in the Soul Reader series that are linked with this series… this book occurs at the same time as Soul Reader book 3, and there are huge crossovers between them.

Darby has to come to terms with the loss of her father, but it’s not too long before she is facing another loss, and a new job.
With the new job come responsibilities she’s not sure that she is ready to face, and repercussions from the battles she has already fought.

This completes much of the first story arc in the Grave Talker world, and begins a new one. We meet up with some old favourites (I really hope Thomas gets his own happy ever after someday), and some new faces make an appearance too.
There’s a lot going on, no real surprises in the first half for those who read the Soul Reader series, but there are a couple of big surprises later.

An exciting and entertaining story in the Arcane Souls world, and a must read for Grave Talker and Soul Reader fans.

The story picks up where Dead Shift left off, with some of the events that transpired at the end of Grave Watch, (in the author’s Soul Reader series) briefly unfolding here through Darby’s POV. As the newly minted Warden of Knoxville, Darby’s not sure if this is a promotion or a punishment. It should be a breeze though – she’s all about diplomacy, right?

I continue to enjoy Darby’s badass character along with her fondness for sarcastic retorts, and speaking her mind while not giving a crap for the consequences of doing so. This well written urban fantasy features plenty of drama, humour, sarcasm, action & adventure, some mystery, and violence, along with some steamy encounters. While this book has a conclusion, we’re left with repercussions that will likely lead to yet more chaos in the next installment of this twisty, entertaining series – Dead Again.

Our heroine has some tough decisions to make concerning her future, but the dead are not going to give her time to think it through. Either way, she is in for some fun times ahead. For varying definitions of "fun."

This is book four of the series. It works pretty well as a standalone. You will be missing a bit of background, but the essential bits are covered early on.

This is an urban fantasy story with a heroine that can speak with the dead. The story is very well written and grabs your attention right out of the gate. I love our heroine who is tough and smart, my favorite kind. The characters and setting are also well done and get better with every new book. The plot moves at a good pace and includes a nice blend of action and intrigue with the occasional touch of humor. Overall, a fun story and I look forward to the next book.

Highly recommended.

Well now…. Talk about a how ya doin’ with a healthy side of wtf?

Detective Darby Adler has had to deal with quite a few pitfalls in the last few weeks. Fights, fights and then their are the family traumas and drama. The poor woman has been to hell and back, not quite literally but close enough. Just when she thinks it can’t get any worse…. Ooh it does.

She’s tossed into a new role — Warden of Knoxville. You could say her kinda of messed that bed up herself so now she has to fix it. But nonetheless, as with all she does, Darby jumps in, ready to take on whatever comes her way.

What she wasn’t expecting was the first 24 hours on the job to be so dang tiring. Fires, dead witches, a snarky wolf pack and a demon. It’s a heck of a ride and one that she manages to come out of on top…. For now. This rodeo is just getting started. She’s got to hold on and hope like hell she makes it the full 8 seconds on the bill under her.

good story, superficial characters

I really like the story but this far into the series the lack of character development is getting on my nerves. Even Darby is pretty thinly drawn—she’s snarky but she cares about fairness and family, she’s immature and impulsive and acts without thinking or talking to anyone. Everyone else is pretty much good or bad and then their job and magic. I struggle to remember their names because they aren’t that different.

The lack of character development also makes it obvious their actions are based on story conveniences and not internally motivated (obviously I know I’m reading a fictional book, but good authors hide their machinations). I had hoped that characters would round out as the series developed, but that hasn’t happened yet. I don’t even care about the romance since Bishop has no personality and mainly exists to save Darby when she’s in a bind

Darby's life has drastically changed in a short time. Not only thanks to her siblings (for better or for worse, depending on the sibling), but also thanks to Azrael and his gift. Now being pushed into the role of the Warden, Darby has to face new challenges and solve another set of problems, exhausted and grumpy as she is. Yet she can prove she can handle herself, if only the surprises and secrets stopped jumping on her though..
Darby and her story both are undergoing some changes, yet the book was no less exciting than the previous books. I was pleasantly surprised by some of the plot twists, revealing new truths, getting more answers, and seeing the world add another layers or dimension to its complexity. Darby is a great heroine, just and fearless, and also with Bishop by her side they are a force. I love the series.

I can't get enough of Darby Adler - she is so kick-ass and sassy. I love all her gang too and enjoyed the new ones introduced here. Annie always brings us the most entertaining cast of characters! This is book 4 and I loved every word. There is a lot of action, humor, suspense, mystery, murder and mayhem plus the burning hot chemistry that Darby and Bishop have. Maybe one day Darby can catch a break and spend some quality time with Bishop. She would probably be bored though. You don't want to miss this series! Pour Darby, she never seems to get a break. Her newest adventure is a little heartbreaking in some parts. I needed a tissue.
It’s a story partly about letting go of the pain and blame so healing can begin. Sometimes it’s hard to see past our own pain and realize that we are not alone, that others might be hurting too and that we can lean on eachother for comfort and support.
Darby has grown so much and yet there is always more to learn.
Her journey has many twists and surprises in it.
The ending surprise has me longing to find out what’s going to happen next. I can hardly wait for Dead Ahead to be released.

A lot has changed for Darby Adler since we met her. One of the biggest and newest changes is that she is now the Warden of Knoxville. Tasked with keeping the arcane in order and being a bridge between worlds, if you will, Darby is thrown head first into her new position. Vengeful witches and rogue shifters are just some of the issues on her plate, not to mention a new home, new colleagues, and everything else that comes with the job. With Bishop by her side, Darby faces it all head on like the badass she is. I enjoyed meeting some new characters and I am eager to learn more about them. Anderson throws in some shocking twists and I absolutely can’t wait to see how they play out.
