There's not enough coffee or tacos in the world to deal with Darby Adler's family.
If it's not her death-dealing father, her back-from-the-dead mother, or her ghost grandfather, it's her long-lost siblings and their bid for power.

This book was all over the place. All over the damn place. It was like the characters were jumping from one point to the next with no build up whatsoever? And sometimes in the middle of other important scenes. Some of those shifts felt incredibly inappropriate considering what they interrupted. It felt a little bit like Anderson had an outline and decided to just write the main plot elements of the plan without bothering to connect them together in a way that made any sense.

The introduction of 62838277263 new characters (that seem to be from a spin-off series?) without making use of them at all with the exception of the chapters where they were introduced was not fun. It made the book feel bloated for no reason since they also weren’t developed here in this installment.

I was also really not a fan of a Darby that does nothing to save herself/her friends until her powers suddenly become super strong and she’s able to solve things. But wait! She isn’t actually able to do any of that without going through a personal tragedy to kick her into gear.

Also, still don’t like Bishop and still don’t like the romance.

I won’t be continuing the series.

This book makes me so annoyed.

So I've whipped through the series in the last day or so. I really enjoyed the characters and the world, although everything happens very fast - I think the timeline is something like two weeks for the first three books? At least, that's what it feels like.

And then I read this one.

The first third of the book is at the same standard of the first two books. Then, abruptly, we're introduced to a huge group of characters (with names, appearances, backstories, and so on), who are supposed to play an important role in this book. It is very clear that they are from another series by this author. This group of characters is honestly kind of useless and out of place, and they don't play a significant enough role in the story to warrant such an introduction. This continues for the next third of the book, during which I contemplate giving this sucker 2 stars. Then the final third of the book (the climax/conclusion) is terrific.

This story literally goes from being a 4-star read to 2 stars to 5 stars, with characters introduced and removed and re-introduced. It's like constant whiplash. Plus!! There are more than a few editing errors! Ugh. In general, I feel like this book needed another round of editing, or even a full rewrite before being published.

Anyways, I am frustrated and annoyed but I'll still read more books by this writer, probably. I guess. As long as she doesn't pull this shit again.

Wow. Just Wow!

In this third installment Darby’s will is tested beyond what any of them ever expected. What she thought was a break and the start of a vacation, turned dangerously deadly real fast. With no rest and minimal power, Darby is in a race to save those she holds dearest to her.

This book was action packed from the first chapter. Taking off and not slowing down for one second. But don’t mistake there is no happy endings for Darby. The world is becoming more twisted than ever and the danger levels are world ending.

Be prepared readers for your heart to be ripped out. Bring tissue, because you’re going to need it. But don’t worry, this book like all the rest will leave you wanting to continue on the journey. It is definitely far from over.

Light but extremely addictive urban fantasy. There are obviously characters that have come from a previous series and that can be frustrating if one hasn’t read those series (like me), but the overall is still engaging and hard to put down.

Another awesome read from the queen herself, Annie Anderson. I'm ready for the next one. These characters are amazing and the story is told so well. I always get sucked in from the first words and can't put the books down. Can't wait to see what happens with Darby next.

Original review

This book was provided by the author in exchange for an honest review. Thank you Annie Anderson!

Dead Calm is the third book in the Grave Talker series and continues the story of Darby and her friends.

Due to not really feeling myself and due to my reading slump, it took me a bit to start reading Dead Calm, but once I started reading I was immediately drawn to the story and characters again. I really love Darby and Bishop, and I was really looking forward to Dead Calm. When Death Watch, the second book in the Soul Reader series, ended I just had to know how the story was going to continue. For those that do not know, both series are set in the same world and the main characters from both series met each other in Death Watch. So after finishing Death Watch I was so excited to read more about Darby and Sloane together!

Some crazy stuff happened in Dead Calm, and I wasn’t even surprised. Annie Anderson loves letting her characters suffer. I really love Darby because she’s so funny, strong and says whatever she wants. I cannot get enough of her (and Sloane). Bishop is also someone that I cannot get enough of. I really like him with Darby, they’re perfect for each other and I love reading their cute scenes together!

Dead Calm was another amazing book by Annie Anderson, and I didn’t expect anything else. She’s such an amazing author and I love her world building and her characters. I also really love that the Grave Talker series and the Soul Reader series are crossover series. I just love both series! I’m really looking forward to the next book set in this world because I just know that there will be more crazy stuff happening to Darby and her friends.

So many awesome quotes that had me dying because i can totally relate too!! best of all, it just gave me all the feels!!!❤️ I couldn’t stop reading! Darby rocks my everything!!! She is adorable and absolutely terrifying at the same time! I love the chemistry between her and bishop. Its been a slow-medium-burn 🔥 with enough smooches to make you swoon for days!!! You must read in order: so many answers! HUGE-brawl-out fights and one big one that goes out with a bang!😱 One huge plot/villain is resolved. That was 🙌👏 epic!!! #SheHadItcoming😤
But Darby’s job is not done. She’s just getting started. Next up: X . Oh brother. Siblings vs Siblings. May the best one win 😈 Cant wait!!!!

Darby and crew get hit on all sides from every direction in this new read from Annie Anderson. She has some severe Mommy Dearest issues, epic sized! She finds her sister from another mother and they team up to take on Mariana and the gambit she has put down. Daddy Azrael is hanging around and dropping clues. X makes an appearance at the end. Darby calls in favors and markers for this battle. Can she win? What is Mariana's grand scheme? Reader beware, you're in for a ride!

I know it's weird that I'm writing an actual review on book 3 when I didn't for books 1 and 2. The thing is, these books are really fast reads, with each ending in what feels like the middle of a beat, so I had to get through a couple to really get a handle on my impression of them. I know, I'm weird.

These books aren't bad, but they aren't great. They are fast reads that have some fun bits, but have these things that drag on them that keep them from being really awesome. For me, it is two primary things.

1- Darby feels a bit inconsistent. Sometimes she's a brilliant hard-boiled detective, and sometimes she's this whining emo chick. And sometimes she's really TSTL. The books haven't told us her age, that I can recall, but I'm guessing, just based on her career... late 20s? But she feels a decade younger a lot.

2- The book climaxes feel a bit frustrating, and I think it's because with each book now, it plays out with Darby watching it unfold and doing nothing - not a goddamn thing - until we're right at the cusp of disaster. I don't know if the author struggles to show a battle in 1st person POV, or what, but that's really how it plays - everyone around her fighting, dying. Villain doing their villain thing. Darby just watching it play out. Villain right about to win and Darby finally thinks some variation of "I have to do something!" And then she does, and saves the day. This is basically like Superman is just standing on the sidelines with his mouth hanging open, watching the fight, his team getting their asses kicked, the world about to end... and he finally goes "oh shit, right!" and jumps into the fight to save the day.

Three books now, y'all, and that's how the big end battle for all of them has played out. I'm literally shouting "DO SOMETHING!" at my book, as she's standing there staring at her friends in serious danger for pages and pages. It is frustrating as hell.

This author is absolutely out of this world! Her books are wonderfully written, flow amongst well, and suck you in from the very beginning. This series is no different. When I read Dead to Me, book one, I was instantly hooked. These books have gotten better with each one and Dead Calm is no different. I love this author! Her mind works in ways that leave us shocked at situations these characters are thrown into.

Darby is back and boy was she missed! She’s fierce, very sarcastic, independent, a coffee addict, and still talks to ghost. Did I mention she finally meets her sister, Soul Eater series, and just of my gosh! The two of them separate are a force to be reckoned with and leave us on our toes, but together! X, Mariana and everything other bad guy better watch out! Darby’s group is back and boy have I missed them. Hildy (her ghost grandpa), La Roux and Sabrina (her ABI allies), her dad, J and so many more. Not to mention Sloane and her group. I’ve come to love each and every one of these characters and they are finally meeting and this author does it justice.

As always this book was action packed and sucked me in from the start. A fight breaking out between Mariana and our rag tag group of heroes, X finally showing himself for a little amount of time, lord of laughs and sarcastic remarks, more bada** fighting and planning, daddy Azrael dropping clues to help his daughters and staying near them, and so much more. Laugh out loud moments, tender sweet moments to pull your heartstrings, gasp out loud moments, nail biting anticipation, and so much more. What’s not to love?!

The Grave Talker series and Soul Eater series intertwine together and highly suggest reading them in order to get more out of these books. Both series are equally fantastic but together they are out of this world. I can’t wait for the best book.

Our heroine is still trying to come to grips with her new powers and the revelations about her family, but it doesn't stop there. All she really wants is some food and a good night's sleep.

This is book three of the series. It works pretty well as a standalone. You will be missing a bit of background, but the essential bits are covered early on.

This is an urban fantasy story with a heroine that can speak with the dead. The story is very well written and grabs your attention right out of the gate. I love our heroine who is tough and smart, my favorite kind. The characters and setting are also well done and get better with every new book. The plot moves at a good pace and includes a nice blend of action and intrigue with the occasional touch of humor. Overall, a fun story and I look forward to the next book.

Highly recommended.

If you have not read the Soul Reader series, then you will probably like this one. But since I have already finished the Soul Reader series, I felt like at about the halfway point, I was re-reading that book, just from a different pov. I already know how the story ends, so there's little point in finishing this series. Yes, I know how it ends from Sloane's pov, & not Darby's, but I already know the ending. So that took the joy out of this book for me, and I really don't see the value in spending money for the 4th book in this series. 😔😔😔

Oh, I love that Darby and Sloane finally got to meet in this story. I had a feeling at the end Dead and Gone that they would. I couldn’t be more pleased.
They make a totally kick butt pair. Once I started I could not put their book down. Now I’m dying for the next one.
If you love action, suspense with a bit of family drama and strong heroines then you should definitely give this story a try.

Loved it

The pathos rage and sadness in equal proportion gets to you in this story. A lot of death and a lot of pain. The story grabs you and you almost feel the bone weary tiredness of Darby. She gets up and does her job but the breaks are there in her soul. Very good story can't wait for next installment

Dead Calm was another epic read from Annie Anderson!
This series keeps getting better and better. I can’t even say much about it without spoiling anything other then it was fantastic.

Fabulous addition to the series with more secrets revealed, more problems to solve and Darby and Sloane cone together. There are still questions but this is another kick ass story with awesome characters and imaginative works building. I’m a real fan and always look forward to new books by this author. She always delivers. Fast paced story, great characters and unexpected twists will keep you reading. I’m so very ready for more.

Annie Anderson has done it again! Don't pick up this book unless you have enough time to finish it in one setting 'cause you won't be able to put it down!

Darby Adler's life just keeps getting more complicated. After her stint in prison (at the hands of her mother, no less), she is once again faced with a horrific murder. This time, the body is found on her mother's grave. But, is it really her mother or a cruel trick?

And, who would have thought that Darby not only had a brother (who is out to kill all of his siblings, BTW), but a sister that Ms. Anderson's readers have already met? I loved this twist and the combining of the two series. I would suggest that you not read this book until you have caught up on both series in order to appreciate the story.

Along with plenty of necromancer action and magic, you also have emotion and love as Darby and her friends try to fight against one of the worst villains I have encountered. Whatever happened to a true Mother's love? Definitely missing in Mariana, that's for sure!

I can't wait to see what happens next to Darby and Sloane and all their friends. Thank you, Ms. Anderson, for another enjoyable book to keep me entertained!

Dead Calm (Grave Talker #3)
by Annie Anderson

***5 stars***

Say it isn't so - Darby and Sloane - together? This makes my little black heart do backflips in sheer excitement! It's absolutely perfect, and deadly, if you're on their bad side.

Darby is on the hunt for mommy dearest aka Mariana and her mysterious evil as all get up,brother X, and she's got the ultimate team backing her up. What could go wrong, you say? Anything and everything, but in this world, that's to be expected.

Darby's family is chaos incarnate, but it seems to work. I mean, who can say they have a ghostly grandfather and a demon dad? Let's not forget her sexy boyfriend, Bishop, and her ghoulish gang of misfit friends. Sounds like a party to me!

Action packed with plenty of twists and turns, right up to the last page. A must read for any Annie Anderson fans.

So, so much happens in this book that you just have to saddle up and hold onto that bronco with both hands, because this ride is going to throw you in all different directions. Darby comes to blows with Marianna, and finally joins up with her sister Sloane. I love how both worlds have now collided. AMAZING story! Now to wait for the further adventures to begin.

Dead Calm is wonderful coming together of family and friends for one cause. It keeps you on the edge of your seat and wanting more with Oh My God scenes and nail biting page turns around so that I could not put it down until I knew what happened. Love is spread throughout the book that smiles are in it everywhere and tears flow freely. I enjoyed it so much I was crushed when I turned the last page and realized it was over and I had to wait and see what happens next. Excellent book by Annie Anderson one of her must reads. Loved it.

Darby never catches a break. Just when you think she's been through enough, and deserves a small moment of peace, Annie throws another challenge her way. Book three has been one wild ride. Secrets, betrayals that cut deep, grief and joy flow through this book and kept me enchanted.
I don't want to spoil things but the appearance of a specific character was just masterfully done.
Who knows what will happen next in this series? At this point, anything is on the table.

Annie has created some amazing characters in this series. She puts in the work and they become a second family to the reader. Darby is hands down one of my favorite characters of all time. I am so invested in this series at this point that I am just itching to know what happens next. I am spellbound. Wonderful read.

I received an advanced copy of this book in exchange for an honest review. Honestly PICK UP THIS BOOK! I've yet to be disappointed by anything written by this author.

“Dead Calm” is the third instalment in the “Grave Talker Series” by Annie Anderson, a fantastic, original, good, solid, classic urban fantasy, which follows Darby Adler an ex-cop, whose very special necromancy gift, brought her to the attention of the ABI (Arcane Bureau of Investigation), and eventually thrown in jail (‘Dead to Me’, Book 1). Nine months later, and after making a deal with the ABI, Darby began to use her gift to solve cold cases for the Bureau, while joggling her day-to-day life, her own dad comeback from the grave (which in fact put her in hot water in the first place), and her love-hate relationship with Agent La Roux (Darby hates to ‘like’ him, and we love to ‘hate’ him, thus win/win😉 (‘Dead and Gone', Book 2).

First in foremost, don’t let the title of the story fool you, it is in fact the calm before the storm hits the fan 😉. The ABI seem to have lost her number, thank the spirits for small favours (whatever temporally!) because Darby has his hands full dealing with her ‘very unusual family”, and if ghost-grandpa, death-dealer dad, and back-for-the-grave mom were not enough, here it comes: sister-dearest, whose familiar background is, while interesting, not even an issue in the wider scheme. As coven finds out that daddy-dearest is not longer bound, things get interesting. Sisters against Marianna, should a balanced fight, told dead calm, before …..

This is the best story in the series so far, grab a beverage of choice and some snacks, because it almost impossible to stop ‘watching’ the plot unfold. And – of course – as always this is a very well-written story, full of twists and unexpected situations that keep on evolving until the very end, interesting plots, joyful anecdotes, and a relatable, witty, more than not hangry heroine (cut her slack, that family is ‘demanding’ to say the least) with an unending love for coffee, thrown in the middle of a carefully crafted urban fantasy world that feels realistic despite the genre.

Books 1 was great, 2 started to have some issues. Action-packed, fast-paced, lots of surprising plot twists.
But when reading book 3, I can't help being turned off by her lack of verbal restraint with anything and anyone. Lost her mother but was raised by a loving stepfather, yet she calls her ghost friend

By Book 3 we still haven't learned much about her new friends' personalities, backgrounds, characters, etc. Her ML is mostly a pretty face with a killer bod and protective instinct. Oh *swoon*. Not.

She just seems like a dog with lots of bark and no bite. Badass Female Lead Fail, because her substance doesn't match her superpower. Did not finish.

Read Brimstone Bound, and you'll see a world of difference in a female detective (a trainee at that) keeping her wits about her despite trauma, and acting like a professional. With class.
