The atmosphere for this game is so instrumental in the way this story evolves. The sounds and details are genuinely creepy.... and that is something I wish more games had. This whole trilogy + The Lost Crown are my favorite games ever. For anyone who likes investigative/horror/mystery sort of games, you will love this game and everything from Jonathan Boakes.

I found no other reviews complaining of a game/system crash upon starting the game so maybe I just got a bad disc. I contacted "Iceburg" support and received an apologetic response but a diagnosis that my "graphic card driver is out of date"...simply not true. There was no response on their part to further inquiries. Owing to the time between purchase and use (I waited until I'd finished two other games before starting this one) I think it unfair to ask Amazon for a refund or replacement. So, I'm out $10+; I know, whining about $10, but if it's that little perhaps you'd care to replace it?

In the series, this was the most disappointing. There was a lot of make work in it, in that you had to use scissors for all sorts of things and you could not just grab a handful from the several rooms containg dozens of them, you could only take one at a time. And if you as much as looked at them crosseyed, they would snap and off you would have to go to find another pair. The game kept us running back and forth, upstairs and down, just busy work. The detective was just too tragic to be believable. I kept expecting him to grow a spine, get angry, but he kept on sounding like he was always on the verge of tears. The whole first part of the game seemed a waste. It improved when it reached the part where there was a bit of time-tripping. If the whole game had been more like that, I would have liked it, but by then it was just so irritating with the scissors and all the games with that one ghost that I just lost patience.

I've played all Mr. Boakes games and will continue to do so. I was excited to see this new one was set at the Dowerton train station as I loved DF:TJ. I found this game to be less logical. I often found myself wondering what I was to do next. Maybe I just didn't quite "get" the text messages from the beyond. Also, it was darker. I prefer games that are less macabre and more 'anticipation'. I felt as if it took awhile to get into the game and midway the story seemed to flesh out particularly after you finally get into the lodging area. I liked the other lives of the guests that you explored. All in all, it was worth playing but just not as good as the rest of Mr. Boakes' games. Keep making 'em!

Not a bad game overall. The hotel was really bad, as in good. It was totally creepy and disgusting. I really did get chills running up my arms more that a couple of times. I liked the idea that the inspector could change the bad things that had happened in the past. The ending was not a total let down as so many of the current adventure games seem to be.

I liked the game. I recommend it.

5.0 out of 5 stars very entertaining and creepy

without spoiling anything, the game is very creepy, and beautiful. interesting story and unique approaches.
only negative i can come up with is the somewhat tedious control scheme. not hard, but it takes a long time to get anywhere. puzzles are somewhat on the hard/abstract side, which many people like however.

overall, somewhat flawed, but very enjoyable and a great addition to the series.

Now, dont get me wrong. I'm a big fan of previous productions like Barrow Hill, and the truly outstanding The Lost Crown. I'm also very much looking forward to Bracken Tor and The Last Crown. Even Darkfall: Lights Out wasn't so bad. The catch is, this is NOTHING like the aforementioned games. It is a quite unpleasantly dark atmosphere that exudes decay, rust and despair. More like Silent Hill in tone, I found this game actually made me feel uncomfortable playing it. Not just in a spooky way, which would have been good, but in a really quite depressing way. It felt like I was wandering around an emo's or drug addict's mind.

If you like your horror more "Silent Hill" you'll probably like it. If you like your horror more "Wicker Man" you probably wont.

2.0 out of 5 stars Very Disappointing
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on December 10, 2010
Having thoroughly enjoyed both the first and second Dark Fall games (The Journal & Lights Out) I am sorry to say that I found this third game in the series far too dark and macabre for my tastes - some of the scenes were quite gruesome and really disturbing. Without giving too much away, I found that going into darkened rooms and seeing a mattress (on a bed) which had dozens of pairs of scissors embedded into it, was really not my 'cup of tea' at all.
The graphics are good and the puzzles are reasonable. But the storyline of this game is centred around child abduction and gory mutilation and I found it so seriously depressing that I left the game unfinished. All in all, I didn't enjoy it, which was quite a disappointment after the first 2 games in this series.
