Product Overview
The FUJINON XF100-400mmF4.5-5.6 R LM OIS WR is a super telephoto zoom lens that covers a 35mm focal length equivalent of 152-609mm. The high performance optical construction of 21 elements in 14 groups includes five ED lenses and one Super ED lens to help reduce chromatic aberration that often occurs in telephoto lenses. As a result, it delivers the highest image quality in its class. The lens has been designed for handheld shooting with a 5.0-stop* image stabilization system and weighs less than 1.4kg. Linear motor for fast autofocusing makes it perfect for shooting fast-moving subjects including aircraft and motorsports. The lens is also both water and dust resistant and can operate in temperatures as low as -10°C, so it’s suitable for use in a wide range of outdoor shooting conditions. A fluorine coating has also been applied to the front lens element to repel water and dirt, further improving the toughness of the lens.
All Fujifilm X Mount camera bodies will require a firmware update to be fully compatible with the lens. The update is scheduled to be released on or about 4 February 2016 for X-T1, X-T10, X-E2 users. Updates for other cameras will be released towards the end of March. Please refer to the website below to confirm your firmware version and the updates required.

Reduced chromatic aberration to help deliver high resolution imagesThe optical construction of 21 elements in 14 groups, which includes five ED lenses and a Super ED lens, delivers results comparable to a fluorite lens, and by reducing axial chromatic aberration it produces images packed with detail. The maximum magnification is 0.19x, enabling users to shoot telephoto macro images. |
Class-leading 5.0-stop* image stabilizationA 5.0-stop image stabilization system — the most powerful in any super telephoto zoom lens — produces shake-free results even at the maximum telephoto setting of 609mm (35mm format equivalent). Also, if panning is detected, the lens automatically switches camera shake correction to the vertical plane only. Fast, quiet AF thanks to twin linear motors Twin linear motors are used to deliver fast focusing on moving subjects. The motors are also quiet, so the lens is ideal for shooting live music performances and theatre productions. Even faster AF shooting is possible with the focus limiter function, which limits the close focusing point to 5m. * CIPA guidelines based, at telephoto end. |
Water / dust resistance, -10°C low-temperature operation and fluorine coatingThe lens features 13 water and dust resistant seals at 12 points, allowing you to shoot with confidence in tough outdoor environments. The fluorine coating applied to the front lens element is water repellent so it’s less susceptible to smudges and can easily be cleaned. |

Compatible with the 1.4x TeleconverterThe lens offers compatibility with the XF1.4X TC WR teleconverter. When attached, it becomes a 140-560mm F6.3-8 or 213-853mm (35mm format equivalent). Phase detection AF shooting remains possible, even at F8. |
Lens hood with a polarizing filter window and lock mechanismThe lens hood features a sliding window so a polarizing filter can still be accessed even when the hood is in place. The hood also features a locking mechanism to keep securely attached to the lens. |
ARCA SWISS tripod plateA lens plate (MLP-75XF) compatible with ARCA SWISS tripods is available as an optional extra. This plate is also compatible with the XF50-140mmF2.8 R LM OIS WR. |

Look like another good lens from Fuji. Feels solidly built, sharp, focusing on static things in bright light felt relatively fast for 400mm lens, not spectacular fast, but OK, even with 1.4x extender on it. Slowish and hunting for focus as light dimmed in the evening.
Tripod collar feels too flimsy. I see the future being bright for RRS making ton of money selling replacement collars.
The lens is big and heavy. As would be expected. It's 400mm lens, you can't cheat with basic laws of physics. All three rings (aperture, zoom, focus) have good feel to them, like on all of Fuji lenses. With clicks on aperture ring being more defined than other variable aperture Fuji zooms, hence likely harder to accidentally bump.
Few snapshots I took look sharp with good color.
An (very late) update:
Having used it for a while, this is a keeper lens. I mainly used it for taking photos of birds and kids. If you shoot birds with Fuji, this lens is probably a must have. For kids sports, it depends on what you shoot and from how far. I'm personally split between 50-140mm and this lens. If I don't need the reach, I find 50-140mm f/2.8 lens better choice because it is a much faster lens (f/2.8 vs. f/5.6), and it focuses much faster too. However, if you do need the reach of 400mm lens, there's no way around it and 100-400mm will do the job well and produce many sharp images.
I used the lens with both X-T1 and X-T2. The images taken on higher resolution X-T2 are every bit as sharp as with the older camera.
I purchased 1.4x extender with the lens, but for one reason or the other ended up not using it much.
I still find the foot bit flimsy design, however didn't have any trouble with it. Kirk Industries makes Arca Swiss compatible lens plate specifically for this lens, and it is perfect fit, exactly the length of the foot. I like the ability to completely remove the foot when shooting handheld.
The image stabilization worked very well. Since I shoot mostly kids and birds, I use lens handheld a lot, and it produces sharp images handheld at 400mm, given reasonable shutter speed. I prefer to have camera set to auto-ISO with shutter speed minimum set to at least 1/500s with this lens. But I had some success slower shutter speeds too.
The lens I originally received turned out to have a little bit of issue with image stabilization, and I had to send it to repairs. After some number of shots, the camera would complain about communication errors with the lens, and I would have to power cycle camera to continue shooting. They fixed the lens promptly, and the lens worked perfectly ever since.
well unfortunately for my 55-200mm, once I got my hands on this 100-400mm lens, I never touched my 55-200mm anymore.
More reach and getting more details, better colors and just better pictures opened a new world to me (for example I was able to take pics of an eagle sitting on a tree and seeing all his feathers and super details in great quality).
yes, its expensive..yes its heavy and big....BUT it is a great lens with excellent OIS! A lens that can provide something to you that none of the other Fuji lenses can as it takes you so much closer to the subjects. It's a specialty lens..it's a unique lens..and its worth every penny. I will be on my way to Yellowstone soon..can't wait.
btw, it's not as heavy as it looks...its big (dimension wise), but it's lighter than it looks.
yes its still heavy compared to other Fuji lenses...but much lighter than DSLR zooms, like some gigantic Nikor lenses etc.
now that I mentioned the 55-200...by having this big 100-400, it doesnt mean, I will dump my 55-200mm...its a great lens too, an excellent travel lens as it's light and compact (compared to the 100-400) with great picture quality. Together with the 18-55, the 55-200 is the perfect travel combo...
But for maximum reach and most details when needed (specialty trips like Yellowstone etc), the 100-400 is the way to go.

It does exhibit zoom creep. I wish the zoom was tighter and/or had a friction setting or lock. The existing lock only works at 100mm. Most of the time, this isn't a problem. I can work around it.
The locking lens hood is great. It goes on and off easily and locks positively in place.
The lens collar is removable by hand. I wish the foot on the collar was bigger to make it useful as a handle.
The 77mm filter is common and useful.
Even the lens cap is well done.
Beware of the seller however. My copy was clearly used even though it was sold as new and Amazon refused to do anything except take it back. The manual was dirty and dog-eared. The lens was covered in dust that one normally doesn't see with a brand new lens. Since my copy is sharp and focuses well, I opted to keep it. I don't mind used lenses but I don't believe in paying new prices for them, so I am unlikely to buy more lenses from Amazon, and I will definitely never buy from that buyer. I don't see that buyer listed anymore so maybe they received complains similar to mine.

The optional TC 1.4 is fine at the shorter focal lengths but gets softer at longer lengths but the images are usable. Don't bother with the 2.0x teleconverter.
The tripod collar is awful (Fuji was trying to minimize weight). Additionally, the tripod foot is not Arca Swiss, so an adapter plate is required.
The hood is well designed and fits securely. The OIS is very good.
At the time of writing this review this is the only long zoom available for this system. The lens is ideal for travel--compact and light. A really nice lens for the hobbyist.

This lens is heavy and requires commitment and a strong purpose.
It will not disappoint if you are looking for excellence.
