The control layout is Nikon intuitive. The Manual Focus override is very helpful. The zoom ring grip feels generous and purposeful, I have bigger hands and don't particularly like the smaller grip on the 18-200 nearly as well. The zoom action is nice and smooth and the big lens shade is especially nice for keeping incident light out. I have read some reviews which knock the build quality a little, because its not at the same 'professional' level as the older 12-24mm, but i think the quibble over that in this plastic age is somewhat useless. Yeah, the 12-24mm barrel is beefier, but the range on the 10-24mm trumps that. I do a lot of volunteer work and don't need a robust casing to brave the elements. If you're generally careful with your gear, like most enthusiasts, you shouldn't have any problems. Just the fact that the 10-24mm sports a metal mount says a lot. And, again, 2 more mm at the wide end makes it a far more useful lens for about $200 less. Just my opinion.
When the angle of a wide lens such as this is proper for the job, several benefits are there because of the lens physics: 1) good depth of field even when hardly stopped down and 2) ability to shoot at relatively low shutter speeds even without VR. The second benefit follows partly because, other things being equal, short focal length lenses are lighter and smaller than longer focal length lenses. I uploaded (to Amazon) a picture made with this lens at Carlsbad Caverns that was shot at f4.2 and 0.4 seconds. Hand held! Of course I had to brace my body as best I could and was far enough from the subject that a flash would have been silly. I used this lens exclusively in the Caverns because I needed to shot low-light hand-held as well as liking the angle of view. I was not impressed until I got home and started looking at the pictures in Photo Shop. I had already announced that these were practice shots so I'd know what equipment (tripod, etc.) to bring next time. At least a third of the shots in these rotten conditions were useful and some were really great. I can't think of another lens in my bag that would work as well (not even the 24-70mm f2.8 because it's too heavy for this kind of long exposure work).
I have owned the 10-24mm for 4+ years. As said above, I only use it once in a while. But it is always in my bag when I go on a shoot. If I need a wide field of view, I know this lens will do the job and I'm willing to take the time to switch. If I wasn't, I would not be using an SLR in the first place.

If I want better I would buy the 14-24 Nikkor and mount it on a D600, D800 or D800E. Period.
This lens is designed for conscientious photographers who (very) carefully study their scenes AND the lighting involved with the intention that their photos display exceptional quality with attention paid to details. This is not a snapshot lens per se (but, you could use this at a party, with the flash set to bounce and take a load of great snapshots).
Note that this lens really shines at f/8 to f/11. The larger apertures still yield sharp images, but f/11 almost looks like medium format shot with film when enlarged to 8x10.
This lens more than fills the bill for a superwide. It costs significantly more than the aftermarket lenses, but after all, by budgeting resouces to buy the Nikkor, one doesn't have to make excuses now, or five years from now when one buys another Nikon. It's impressive that something of this optical quality is offered at this price; but, clearly Nikon is 'on the ball' about using all of the modern advances in compound lens design and materials (ED and aspherical glass), coupled with extensive manufacturing experience.
